This eye candy doesnt live up to the hype.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat has vast environments and beautiful textures, and with loading times being shorter than expected. But, even purchased as the spinoff console version, I still expected (and hoped) the gameplay to somewhat fall inline with the traditonal 'battlefield' gameplay and mechanics I fell in love with on the PC. I would consider this title for dedicated fans of the modern warfare genre who intend to play this exclusivly on LIVE. If you're looking for a co-op or offline multi-player look elsewhere. Only six more days til star wars battlefront 2. You can wait a little longer, cant you?

XB Battlefield 2: Fake Combat

I gave this game a 3 star rating. I have a top-of-the-line high def 48" with monster cables for hook ups because I want clear and precise pictures. But for Xbox this doesn't help at all of course.

BAD: When someone gets shot they instantly turn into a rag doll. Now in some cases this may be true but how can someone's legs buckle the opposite directions at the knee after being shot by a gun? They stopped using dummies in movies long ago because it looks fake and they don't bend naturally.

BAD: When a jeep gets hit with a rocket the jeep totally evaporates into thin air? Lame!

BAD: When you jump into water the quick under-then-over `bob effect' is crappy.

BAD: Overall picture during game play is very blurry.

BAD: The perception while playing is too "game-like" and not realistic.

BAD: When you see someone get into a vehicle they first disappear outside the vehicle and then reappear inside the vehicle. I've seen this before in other games but this is really fake.

BAD: The color detail is horrible.

Maybe I just got my hopes up after being sold on the trailer.

GOOD: The cool things about the game is the story line, sound effects, gun and soldier graphics looked ok. However, everything else was blurry, unrealistic, and thus disappointing.

Exceeded expectations but sucks at the same time.

This could be the best Xbox game, EVER! Unlike the previous comments, the pictures and textures are magnificent to behold! The maps are HUGE with great detail. The controls feel tight and on target. This is how the game exceeded my expectations.

How it sucks? I bought this for online play ONLY. I could care less about single player. I played the Demo to death since July and that was only one map (my CD has faded). So, just imagine my excitement when the game came out and has so many more maps.

Only problem is it's almost impossible to play online. The game freezes during matches, lags and then boots you out of the room, or you can't sign in at all.

Also, my stats are missing half the time. I've noticed that players are racking up points in the thousands but how are they on long enough to to that??? I belong to three different gamer groups (two of which are GeezerGamers and 2Old2Play) and no one can get into or stay in a game!

And, I was excited about the support for Clans. There are clans but you can't play clan matches. HUH???????????? Unless they upgrade the game, there's nowhere to make your own room like in Halo2 or PGR2. How are we supposed to practice for the big tournament??? Not to mention no one can get on or gets booted every few minutes!

Like I said, this game could be the greatest game ever for the Xbox........ but only if EA gets their act together fast.

We beta tested the you know what out of the demo for you guys for FREE! Don't get me wrong, the demo was awesome and we loved it. But we would love this more. We expected better from EA than we're getting. And that's a shame.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ONLINE

OK, so there I was, eagerly awaiting the release of BF2 for Xbox. I'd played the demo, played on computer, it was all pretty cool, and it can only get better by the time it releases right? Well, nope. It seems like an ok single player game, but who really likes to do that? Everyone wants to play online. Except in this game, you really can't. All that has been happening to me so far, is that I have problems signing on, I lose my connection halfway through a game, and it when I can play, it doesn't keep my stats. All in all, if you want a decent single player game, this might be for you. If you want to play online, send me 50 bucks, I'll send you Halo 2, and we will both be happy. Until EA fixes their glitches (I understand that @#$$ happens, but I don't want to pay 50 bucks for it) I will be thinking of returning this totally worthless multiplayer game, and playing Halo 2.

Nice Graphics - a Few Flaws

Battlefield 2 - Modern Combat is a great arcade-style fast paced action game. Just be prepared for some odd graphic issues while you play.

The gameplay involves a squad of soldiers moving through a well laid out cityscape. You can see the dirt on the window panes, the signs along the road, the icicles on the rooflines. You play in various weather conditions and deal with fire, smoke, and other environmental distractions.

It's amazing that we have gotten so "spoiled" that we take all of that for granted, and can complain about small anomalies. For example, we found it greatly amusing that when you shoot a jeep, it blows into a million tiny shards and vanishes completely. We also laughed when you shot an enemy soldier and apparently your bullets are "bone-dissolving" because they collapse like a jello-creature.

Still, that hardly takes away from the real gameplay. Your squad each has different weapons and capabilities, and in an ability I found REALLY cool, you can instant-teleport from one to the other as long as you can establish a sight-line. It was like having cosmic vampiric abilities. Also, to add to replayability, there are a ton of special medals and bonus points you can get, for things like achieving the longest hot-swap, doing long jeep jumps, and destroying all of the road signs.

There is some strategy involved here. You can't just run down the road blasting and expect to survive. You have to take cover, move along carefully and take your shot when it's clear. That being said, you don't have the squad level of command that some other games feature. You can't get an overhead view and set your guys up in formation, planning things out at a "manager" level. Your guys have reasonably good AI and act as best they can. If you want one of them to do something in particular, you have to "take them over".

The soundtrack is reasonably good - it gives a underlying 'movie feel' to the game without really intruding on gameplay. The soldier chatter that goes on is on one hand done reasonably well, but on the other hand it gets tiresome after a while. I'd almost like the ability to toggle between 'chatty' comrades at the beginning of the game down to 'pensive and quiet' ones near the end of the game.

This game of course has an online component to it. It's funny how some people feel online is the "only way" to play a game - while thousands of other people don't have online connections and honestly don't want them. I've played a ton of online XBox games, but also love playing solo. In any case, if you WANT to play online, you have to make sure your net connection as tuned as possible. The game supports 24 simultaneous players so as you can imagine the potential for lag is incredible. Find players that have top notch connections and make sure yours is as high speed as possible as well.

Well recommended!

Battlefield vs Mercenaries

I have played about 50% of the missions in both games, so here are my comments.

These are both fun 'modern day' war games. You can drive jeeps, tanks and fly helicopters in both games.

Mercenaries is a third person game (driving and flying is similiar to grand theft auto).

Battlefield is first person and plays like Medal of Honor except with drivable tanks and choppers.

Battlefield has 20? large missions while Mercenaries has 90? smaller missions.

to be continued

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, A must buy for any war game enthusiast!

First of all, I want to clear up any issues regarding the "game freeze" during online play. EA has fixed this problem as of Friday October 28, 2005. They have added an auto-update that takes 10 seconds to load onto your Xbox, and it will allow you to play online without any freezing issues. Before this auto-update, I was only able to play online for a mere 10-15 minutes before the game froze on me. I played the other day for a solid 3 hours without any problems. EA has responded to this problem and I commend them for their quick response to this issue.

Now, my review on Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for the Xbox. I want to start off by saying that this is a great game. The award winning PC version was incredible and the Xbox version is not exactly par with the PC, but it will definitely do.

Now if your like me, it's all about the online play. The campaign mode in this game is a lot of fun, but its not the sole reason to add this game to your cart. The online play is simply amazing. The battlefields are huge, with alleyways, buildings, train crates, bridges, rivers, and ditches to use for stealthy attacks against the enemy. Walking from one end of a map to the other, takes an eternity, but this factor only adds to the realism of an actual battlefield.

The graphics are fantastic to say the least! This isn't Socom people, and you quickly come to this conclusion, when you see the graphics for yourself. I'm still impressed every time I play this title. It looks very good. The Sound Effects are top notch, and the music adds a cinematic element to the gameplay experience that I kind of like. The music will even change to a more intense rhythm when an enemy appears on your screen. And if music isn't your thing while playing a war game, then you can always turn it off in the settings menu.

The ability to choose a different soldier before you respawn is a nice feature. You can choose from Assault, Sniper, Spec Ops, Engineer or Support. Assault gives you an assault rifle with a grenade launcher, pistol, Fragmentation and smoke grenades. Sniper gives you a sniper rifle, pistol, laser target Designator, (for missile strikes), GPS unit, (to spot hiding enemies), and fragmentation grenades. Spec Ops gives you a silenced assault rifle, silenced pistol, explosives, combat knife (for close quarter combat), and stun grenades, (which temporarily blinds the enemy). Engineer will give you an automatic shotgun, blowtorch repair kit, (for repairing vehicles), pistol, rocket launcher, and vehicle mines. And last but not least Support will give you a M249 which is a heavy machine gun with lots of ammo, an auto-injector (field medicine for yourself or other soldiers), pistol, and of course fragmentation grenades.

During combat, there are a number of ways to reach the enemy. You can fly in a chopper or take a ride in a jeep, tank or even a boat. 30+ vehicles to choose from. My personal favorite is taking a transport helicopter. One pilots the aircraft while 2 sit inside with the ability to fire whichever weapon they have, and 2 others operate huge 7.62mm machine guns on the side of the chopper. Want to get out? Jump out and deploy your parachute while picking off the enemy from a hundred feet off the ground. C'mon, this is great stuff!

If you're looking for a great war game, this is it. Battlefield 2 requires skill with the arsenal above, knowledge of the maps, and the ability to be a team player. Walking into a highly guarded area by yourself with a sniper rifle, would not exactly be your finest moment. This game will force you to be a team player.

I only have 2 complaints with this game. What kind of review would this be if I didn't have any constructive criticism? First of all, Battlefield 2 will not allow you to invite your friends over to join you in an online battle. Halo 2 had this, and I definitely miss this feature. Second, When playing an optimatch battle set for low experienced players, I found myself playing alone. The only way to get a massive 24 player game going, is if you choose a quickmatch. So if you're new to Battlefield 2, you're going to have a rough time playing against experienced players.

Besides that, Battlefield 2, with its large and highly detailed 10 online multiplayer maps, 50+ weapons, 30+ vehicles, and 24 players online... This game is a must buy for any war game enthusiast. Purchase this game today, it's a monster of a game and you're going to love it.

EA needs to fix bugs for online play

I'm sure a lot of people are buying this game to play online. As of the first week of the release, there are so many problems with the online functionality. Problems logging in, "cannot connect to EA", horrible horrible lags (for eg. when you're running or driving, every few seconds you get bounced back as if you're running into a trampoline), getting booted out of the server, server disconnect, etc. As you can imagine, it can get quite frustrating playing online. At least EA is fixing this problem at this moment. Luckily, the single player campaign missions are fun to play. The single player game will keep me satisfied until the online function gets more stable.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME....

....if you care about online play. I know that some reviewers have said that EA has fixed their online problems; unfortunately this is not entirely true, depending on what you feel that the online problems are. Some of the freezing issues have been eradicated, but the overall interface is typical EA - worthless at best.

I am a mature gamer (30+) and regularly play with a group of friends, it is next to impossible to get them all into one game, and once you do, you inevitably get a bunch of screaming kids, racists, etc because EA didn't have the foresight to add a "friend only" option?!?!?!

Perhaps I have just been spoiled with Halo 2's party/lobby system, I don't know what is wrong with EA, but they insist on managing the online portion of their gaming. Have they not proved it time and time again that their Live interface is one of the worst in online gaming? In one corner, you have Bungie with a tried and true menu/lobby/game selection UI... and on the other side, you have the mess that EA passes off as UI. So why do it? Is it because they don't want their XBL corporate identity to be linked as a little sibling of Bungie, or a copycat? They need to get over it, the comparison is still being made, only in a MUCH more unfriendly light.

It is truly a shame that what could have been a fantastic game is doomed to be a colossal failure due to a horrid user interface... way to go EA... again...
