I rented this vidia game and found it to be good in graphics but wished it was a little more controller intuitive, and more fluid in it's fighting segments of the game.

Star Wars of the videogames...

I first saw a commercial for Advent Rising while watching TV maybe a couple of months ago and when it first came out I bought it without second thought. This is mainly becuase I went online and researched the game and found out that Orson Scott Card helped write the scripting for the game, and I love his Sci-fi work. It was one of those situations that I just couldn't say no to.

Let me first start off with saying that the plot, characters, and just the whole concept of the game are 2 thumbs up across the board. A little rundown is that a race of aliens, the Seekers, have it out for humans becuase all across the galaxy humans are worshipped as gods for the powers and nobility, but are thought extinct. The Seekers know that this is not true and are hunting down all human survivors after they originally destroyed Earth.

You play as Gideon Wyeth, and the humans, after moving to a different planet, but having been isolated for so long, have forgotten their pass, finally meet friendly E.T.'s. This other group of aliens has come to warn the humans of the imminent destruction of their race and advises them to evacuate their planet as fast as possible.

The bad news is that the Seekers show up right then and destroy everyone except Gideon, his brother, and a female captian who they escaped offworld in her ship. Gideons wife was taken, and after his brother also dies in the endless struggle for freedom, he's basically pissed.

Thats about the some of the game, in a nutshell of course, because the in-game conversations aren't corny as many games are, and many of the in game movies have been leveled up from just cut scenes using game graphics to just below Final Fantasy: Spirit's Within. This gives the game on hell of a cinematic experience. Graphics are great, along the lines of Halo and Halo 2, and the powers that you have are also very creative.

Most of your powers are very like Star Wars ones, but in-game text explains how these powers really work. Many are such things as Surge, which tightens all the threads of surrounding space-time and whips it back, which can be aimed at an enemy. You can also do the opposite, and steal weapons from other enemies. This is just one of the six powers that you have, and all are very unique, not just different names that basically all do the same thing.

This game does have many technical glitches, but I find that many of these are experienced by other gamers. I have only had Advent Rising freeze on me once, and I have never gotten stuck behind or in anything. The in-game A.I. can be a little slow at times, but I also play on easy (not very good of a video gamer) and I'm not complaining.

Overall: Definitely a 5, including the glitches, which I'm guessing will all be soothed out in the two upcoming sequels to one of the greatest games created.

Glitches ruin what could be a great game

The writing for this game is great. So much better than the usual dialogue you get from hack writers out there. The story is very compelling and I enjoy the game mechanics. The engine itself is not to badly designed however it is plagued with bugs. The game locks up repeatedly. So much so, that I have decided to simply return it. This game showed a lot of promise, and I hope that they release some sort of Live downloadable patch for it. I don't think that will happen though. I found the game impossible to play due to random freeze ups. Steer clear of this one, but definitely check out the sequel.

THE GEORGE W. BUSH OF VIDEO GAMES

This game isn't even FINISHED yet! There are soooo many bugs and framerate issues that should have been resolved, and you'd think they'd have time to do it considering how little effort they spent on the graphics. Seriously, these graphics are simpler then the script-writer of Everybody Loves Raymond on crack. The characters' faces are unforgivably plain and void of any distinctive features, in fact, there's virtually no difference between any of the faces. The story sucks, it's basically the same as every single other sci-fi story out there. Don't buy this game, don't rent this game, simply point at it and laugh.

Great story, music, gamplay, O.K. controls. Great GAME!!1

Wonderful game with intriguing story despite it's many technical problems. I think we should start a petition to remake the game for xbox 360/PS3 fix the technical problems, update the graphics, and leave the beautiful story and original gameplay as it was.

Short

Pros:
- some of the cutscenes are quite nicely directed.
- "force" powers- you can pretty much use them solely to get thru the game once you have a few of them.
- the environment you traverse is continuous - ie there is no "please wait, loading...." of stages.
- You get to jump into jeeps and ships and drive them- like in Halo.
- The game doesn't end after the credits are over. Nice touch.

Cons:
- very cliched plot elements- stolen from all the major sci-fi films.
- "force" powers are too powerful most of the time.
- Game is way too short.
- First boss will require you to look at online cheats to figure out.
- Flick targeting is horrific at times.
- Game generally could use a month of polish. The soundtrack jars during stage transitions.
- Game only seemed to crash once. But on reload it seemed to have left off where I crashed.

If you like games like Psi Ops, Jedi Outcast, Second Sight, then you will find this game entertaining for a little bit. I say a little bit because the game is very short.

BUT you have to be forgiving about the horrific flick-targeting system and the glitchy audio.

So rent it or buy it on discount if possible.

Very overhyped.

This game should have been good, with the brilliant Orson Scott Card as the storywriter and renowned video game musician Tommy Tallarico as the sound track creator, but it isnt. The story line is very derrivitive and dull, the graphics are seriously outdated, the flick targeting system is annoying and unresponsive, the frame rate was aweful, and there were tons of bugs and glitches littered through out the game. The only good I can say about the game is that the flick targeting system is a good idea, the power ups are pretty cool, and the sountrack to the game is amazing. If you are an Orson Scott Card fan, or in search of a good game, then stay away from Advent Rising. Just hope that the sequels will be better.

Can't wait for the last two games to end the trilogy.

Alright... I don't normally leave reviews. I just happen to believe this game deserves one.

Note: Everyone likes to compare games. I'm basing this review purely on gameplay and story.

Pros:
-Great story. Some say that cliches that were stolen from every sci-fi movie. (Duh, sci-fi game... it's going to have the same concepts. All games are going to have to use concepts from something else. Advent Rising just happens to have the ability to make it, its own.)
-Well directed cut-scenes. (Some cut-scenes aren't as nice because I think they're just made to get the point across.)
-Bonding with characters.

Cons:
-Flick-targeting takes some getting used to. (But once you do... it can be a beautiful thing. If you get sick of locking on to the random objects in the room... Just turn it off in your settings.)
-Game has crashed. (That's because my Xbox is getting old. I swear the damn things are made to wear out.)
-Framerate drops from time to time. (I haven't had any sound problems except for ONE cut-scene. The sound lagged behind the characters speaking. OH! And at times the sound is too quiet. But really... It's not so bad.)

This game kicks ass. Plain and simple. The technical issues are insignificant compared to the overall quality. I found the flick targeting glitch to mildly annoying, but it rarley was a problem for me , actually i found it to be very useful when firing while moving. Somebody mentioned something about the abrupt narrative clip segues, but I think that's just nitpicking an otherwise beautiful, incredibly entertaining ride.
