The video card with Shader 3.0 requirement is the only thing that stops me!!! My system meets and exeeds ALL the requirements EXCEPT my ATI X800XT PE which has only Shader 2.0 not 3.0 after I bought the game and run the system test!! Can't get REFUND, so I really hope UBISOFT, PLEASE ADD MORE VIDEO CARDS SUPPORTS for the PC VERSION!
Updated 11-9-2006
As discussed in the UBISOFT forum, this game is extremely BUGGY!!!!! People are experiencing slow frame rate and crashes even applying the 1.01 patch. Until UBISOFT fixed those problems, I should lower the rating down to 1 star due to the fact that UBISOFT rushed to release the PC version.
Excellent!

Best Splinter Cell yet! Game play, graphics, options, everything is top notch. Highly recommended! (p.s. if you would have read the minimum pc requirements before you bought you would have realized that Shader Model 3.0 was required. Oh and by the way, you can't give the game a rating if you havn't played it yet)
Ignore the one star ratings!!!!

I love how some of the other reviewers gave this game one star because their computers aren't equiped to play the game. As if it's the game's fault that they're too stupid to read the system requirements before they buy it.
Yes, be fore warned that the system specs are huge. There are only a handful of GPU's that are supported in this game, so make sure that you have the right video card before you buy it. Also, you'll need at least 1GB of RAM (I recommend more)and a 3ghz CPU. The install footprint is huge, taking up a little over 10GB. I should also mention that this is a DVD-ROM game, so you'll need a DVD-ROM drive to install it.
The game itself is amazing as always. The Splinter Cell series has always been the high mark of stealth based gameplay, and this new episode is no exception. The visuals have improved greatly since the last Splinter Cell game, which explains the high system requirements. The gameplay itself is basically unchanged, with only a few new gadgets to mess around with. The biggest difference in this game as compaired with the previous three is that you now have to balance your loyalty to the NSA with winning the trust of the terrorist organization that you've infiltrated. That makes for some very tough decisions durring the course of the game and does a lot to immerse you into the life of Sam Fisher as he struggles with morallity verses the mission.
Splinter Cell: Double Agent doesn't deserve the one star ratings from the few idiots who don't know to check system specs before they buy. Don't be like those guys. If you enjoyed the other games in this series, and you have the hardware to run it, then you'll love every minute of this game.
I second the warning!

Got this game home, installed it fine, but it gives me an error message when I try to start telling me that the shader is not right. May be a fun game; apparently only hard-core gamers or those with an XBox, PS2, etc will find out though!
Ubisoft appears to have shipped Beta version.

As most people are aware, Splinter Cell is part of the unique game genre called stealth FPS (First-Person Shooters). Generally, the Splinter Cell games are sharp, detailed, and challenging. Splinter Cell: Double Agent is no exception.
Ubisoft has brought several new features to the Splinter Cell game in this latest edition, including unlockable gadgets (based on mission objectives), factions, flexable mission objectives, and an atmosphere there your choices actually impact the game. Once I was able to get the game running, I am instantly immersed into the exciting and heart-pounding environment.
Ah, but that is the real challenge it seems. It took me several hours and many more visits to various trouble-shooting forums to get the game up and running. Here is a laundry list of problems I have encountered during the first few hours after getting the game:
1. Autoloaded menu bogs down PC to the point where I could not move the mouse. I Ended up finding the Setup.exe file on the DVD and executing the installer directly.
2. Installer has problems with Daemon Tools virtual ROM program. I had to remove Daemon to get SC to complete installation.
3. The main game .exe (pointed to by desktop icon) does not load the game. I end up getting an error stating **Must Check**. To get past this, you need to create a shortcut to the Offline .exe file and append the switch "-ll" to the pathing information in the shortcut. As a side note, the Online (Multiplayer) .exe file loads fine without any changes.
4. Once you are able to load the Offline (solo) game, the intro movie has a tendency to fall into a loop and continuously play. I ended up having to navigate to the movies directory on the program folder and rename the intro movie so it does not load.
5. The ingame save menu is horrible. I cannot seem to be able to rename the saves with unique names, but a location and date stamp as least makes it useable. As a side note, quicksaves appear in the save-game list, but cannot be loaded when reentering a game. Quicksaves only appear to be usable when the "Load Last Save" option is available.
6. Exit movie loop..... at this point, I am usually so frustrated that I just do a hard-reboot.
If Ubisoft had done another 3 or so weeks of development time, this game would be wonderful. I can't help but think that they prioritized the concole versions above the PC version and PC users are the ones suffering because of it. They have release one path for the games, but as far as I can tell, it does little to fixe any of the problems listed above.
Fun Game but annoying little things

First of all I will say that the game is lots of fun, if you are willing to cope with trial-and-error gameplay. There are tons of gadgets and if some of you are worried about not having goggles then heres the deal. Ironically, after you throw your goggles out the helicopter after hearing Sam's daughter is dead the JBA gives you an identical pair. You will not get the goggles on the JBA HQ missions or in the prison of Africa (where you get strange aviator type sunglasses which you toggle on and off like night vision). The scope in very fun to use and it even has it's own integrated Night vision, heat vision, and EMP (electro magnetic pulse) vision. The sam's visibilty meter is now a green (total darkness), yellow (visible yet undetected), and red (detected) light. There are so many new gadgets but now I will tell you the major downfalls. This game forced me to spend around $900 to buy a new processor, motherboard, and a video card at half price from a friend. Frankly, Ubisoft have formatted this to work with SM 2.0 which will probably cost them lots of money. Also I have heard (but I cannot be considered reliable) has announced they will not release a patch to fix this problem. In any case the game also has some wierd glitches but I won't go into details since they are very unnoteworthy. The only other annoying thing is that, if you want to get the good upgrades, then you have to go totally undetected the whole game. Mainly I rated this 3 stars overall because of the really annoying system requirements. Last thing I would like to say is, if you have a computer that will run this game, buy it since it is probably one of the best Splinter Cell's ever.
A solid 4th installment in the Splinter Cell franchise

The game play is breathtaking as are the graphics on a powerful gaming rig. I'm running dual nVidia 7900GTX's and an AMD FX-57 and this game is mesmerizing. I really appreciate some of the new features such as the new zoom mode and the ability to more realistically hold your breath to stabilize and take a shot. The new weapon system spices the game play up and the ability to interact with the environment more smoothly than before is the best feature yet. Voice acting is superb as are the scripted character motions like the underwater kill moves and the pipe crawling. This is a very strong addition to the Splinter Cell franchise of which I already own all previous games for the PC.
PC version not as polished as previous Splinter Cells

I found a number of problems in this first unpatched PC release of SC:DA, and a few style changes that makes the game feel more like a console game than PC:
- Can't customize mouse buttons, they are fixed on fire and alt-fire
- Unlockable items don't unlock
- While using pistol to disrupt a light, I was not able to holster the pistol until I fired a shot from it.
- After I knock out a person the game forces me to pick him up. I don't want to pick up a person every time I choke them down.
- Game runs much slower than previous SC games.
A few interface changes I didn't like, which are subjective:
- Sam looks like a walking traffic light
For the stealth indicator, a component on Sam's suit turns bright red, yellow or green to determine how visible he is. This indicator takes immersion away from the character since it looks silly to see an agent walk around with a bright-colored light emitting from his back. It looks like he is trying to direct traffic rather than sneak around.
- Interaction interface uses big icons instead of text-based menu as in the previous games. It's annoying to guess what icons are what when quickly trying to pick an option, and I found the text-based options from previous versions better.
Graphically the game does look good with HDR, and levels appear more detailed.
Overall there should be more options and customization available for PC users since customization is an advantage of the PC platform. Ubisoft should have left the game to cook longer with QA before release.
Game loses 1 star for bad QA, 1 star for performance, and 1 star for lack of PC control customization. If you have to buy the game, buy it used. Who knows if and when ubisoft will patch the game to make it more enjoyable for PC customers.
If Ubisoft patches the game to address these issues then I will edit and change this review accordingly.
Do not buy the PC version

Alrighty... Let me start off by saying that the music in this game is INCREDIBLE! If there was an album i would buy it instantly. With that said, this game has many many problems on the PC platform...
most people already are aware of the setting of the game and the situation of Sam Fisher if you watch anything on TV, there's so many commercials for the game! Anyways, i got excited to play this game and couldnt wait to get it on PC. I finally got it and i started playing the game on my pc and i was quickly disapointed because i noticed that the game ran VERY VERY slow. And, i EXCEED the recomended requirements for the game and i had everything set to LOW. Then i put everything to HIGH and the game ran with about a 2-3 fps difference of an average 15 fps! Im a computer god, i know if my baby is running slow or has a virus, I tell you right now that the PC version of SCDA is complete crud and the coding for the game is terrible becuase i run bf2142 with everything maxed out and i never drop below 50 fps.
Ubisoft SHANGHAI didnt bother optimizing the game for the PC, they just ported the game directly from the xbox360 to the PC, and everyone knows that the xbox360 platform is completely different from a PC because the xbox360 has three 3.2ghz in-order processors and the PC has 1 very powerful out-or-order processor, architecturally speaking, so that is why the game runs terribly, it was written for the 360. Basically, the processor in the xbox360 executes processes in the perfect order of which they were given, but the PC executes multiple executions simultaneously in any order that it was given, which is why an amazing PC processor costs more then a 360. The 360 cost about $300 total becuase it has in-order processors, which are heavily stripped down processors and thus, can't really be considered a real processor. anyways...
There is a ton of false advertising for this game.
-On the game box it says you can unlock gadgets and weapons to defeat your enemies, or something like that. Yea, you can unlock the gadgets, you just can't use them! Ever! Nice.
-Also on the box, it says "Optimized for Dual Core processors" which is not true, and infact, the game runs worse on dual dore computers then single core.
-No Lobby for internet or lan gameplay. So if you wanted to play with your friends via the internet, HAH! Good luck! The only option you have for finding a game is "join session" and when you click on that the game finds a session for you and joins it. Directly ported from the xbox360... So sad... It doesn't end there, the game is FILLED with so many disconnect bugs in multiplayer that you never actually get to play the game you paid for. And this is after ubisoft released a patch to fix this; trust me it isnt fixed.
This game had so much potential for the PC but it was blown off by Ubisoft Shanghai and whoever else participated... I've been waiting for a REAL patch for the game which actually fixed the gameplay itself and add a multiplayer lobby, but its been over 3 weeks of people complainging on forums and writing letters and still nothing! Not even a word of acknowledgement that the game is not working as intended for the PC.
Honestly i tried to play this game but it was so bad i gave up. Multiplayer is embarassing and looks like crud plus singeplayer is riddled with wasted "fill levels" for the JBA ( a HUGE majority of the game) where you are given a task, like making 10 mines for Enrica or something silly... They basically give you a task and return in 25 minutes to see if you completed it and if you aren't where they left you when they come back you lose faction. Its ridiculous because i spent more time in the JBA hideout then on any other map and it was frustrating to waste so much time on a really graphically ugly level. I literally had sam standing for 8 minutes with all my quests completed just waiting for the level to end. Its LAME!
