*For anyone about to play The Thing for PC, please visit the official website and download the patches. You will be able to use a mouselook function which greatly aids gameplay.*
"The Thing" successfully re-creates the mood and visual atmosphere of the original film, but fails in some very basic areas of gameplay. The developers clearly dreamed big with their attempt at squad based gameplay, but ran out of either time or talent before realizing their dream.
The communication interface is clumsy, and often feels superfluous given that every single NPC you collect as a squadmate will either burst into a Thing, die horribly, or simply disappear at the end of a level. There is even a command ("Go To") that's never used. Other opportunities are wasted as well. The hypodermic test needle, for example, (remember the alien blood fire test from the film) could have been a great strategic resource, but its implementation in the gameplay is a failure: NPCs become Things at random intervals independent of blood tests. Oh well.
My last major gripe is the lack of pacing and suspense. Clearly, The Thing was intended as an action/survival horror style of game. But the indroduction of a horde of small and easy to kill Things early in the game evaporates any sense of tension, and it's difficult to reclaim with only a small variety of Things thrown out in large numbers. The developers missed a grand opportunity to capitalize on the film's themes of abduction and mistrust. The game is also buggy, with enemies falling through floors and some really erratic hit detection, particularly with flame.
However, it's still worth playing. Borrowing from many staples of successful franchises (RE's typewriter save-stations for example), the game does enough right to encourage futher exploration. And the visuals don't discourage at all. By playing on a resolution of 1024 or higher, it's apparent how much care went into the level detail. The programmers did succeed in one very difficult task: making a dull outpost surrounded by Arctic nothingness seem varied and colorful. I played with the walk function toggled on primarily, creeping forward and enjoying the sights and atmosphere. Voices and sound effects, the crunching snow particularly, are nicely done.
So, for folks who enjoy the action/horror type of game, or dedicated Thing fans, this will mostly please. But it's tough to recommend taking time away from so many other superior action titles currently available.
So good, it's HORRIFIC!

One of the best movie to game conversions. Good graphics, sound and handling. Tension and fear is included in this game! This game is as well great for people who didn't see the movie.

the graphics and story line are excellent also the action is fast past, but my complaints are as follows:(maybe some one from
Sierra might read this?)
1 easy level is too hard(try getting into the armory!)
2 sequence is too long between save points-this is strange
because some save points are very short?
3laguage unsuitable for younger people,it doesn' really add
to the story line!
4sometimes switches between weapons seems to malfunction-I have
a new dell with top features and no problems with other programs
5 this is a very good game and avid gamers will no doubt be
able to get into the armory, but for the rest it will be a
frustrating experience-did they forget this was supposed to be
fun?
awsome game this is

The other day, which was 6 days ago I was watching the sci-fi channal and the commercials came on the first one was about sam adams new light beer which was pretty stupid then this commercial
came on right in the begining it said rated m for mature then shows these guys jumping out of a heliacopter and run to this base I thought at first it was another aliens game because guys are shooting spider like thing out the window and this big red alien running around and the guy trying to kill it with a flamethrower and the leg with blood all around it was pretty cool looking. but what suprised me that the name of the game was
"the thing." it tooked after my favorite movie way cool it contuies right after the movie its the thing 2, the game.
this was the kind of game i had to have. i have 10 computer games , red faction, predators vrs. aliens 2, and many more but this game is the best beats all of them.
A great game

This game takes such a beating and I don't know why. I think this is a good game. One thing I seek the most out of video games and movies is atmosphere. For example Resident Evil 2 was my first video game, Dreamcast, and I love its atmosphere. Likewise with Tomb Raider Chronicles. I thourghly loved the "Thing" movie and and this game has the wonderful snowy background.
At first I was put off because it was mouse driven, and the manual was so complex. But I just dove-in and though I haven't finished, I am glad to have the game. I for one thank Sierra for coming out with this game.
Incredible Game!

This game could almost be compared to Half Life. Although the controls are a little strange, you can easily get used to them. I had trouble running it(the sound would quit working) but I went to www.thethinggames.com and downloaded both the patches and it works like a charm! Yes the flamethrower is somewhat annoying but it isn't that bad. THIS GAME IS NOT FOR THE LIGHT-HEADED! With the ability to explode humans heads off, people giving you the finger, and more blood than the HALLOWEEN and Friday the 13th series COMBINED!, this game is rated M for mature for a reason! But still is a must buy!
Man, I wish i knew what shovel i used to dig up this little gem!

Insane, I ordered tis products in opes of getting the movie. But instead, I get the game which I tought was long gone, and still in it's sealed packaging to boot.
Now the grapics are old and not next-gen, the I actully ae to dumb down my machine alittle to play it right, but once I get the game going, it gold.
Yes I've recently secured the DVD, but there something about playing The Ting that more entertaining.
A New Level of Fear!

This is one seriously good game. The AI and special lighting effects along with excellent audio create a spine-chilling atmosphere. You can trust no one in this game. Everyone is a potential target, a potential "Thing". Go out and buy it!!!
