The Ace Combat series is definitely one that has progressed over the years. Ace Combat X, the series debut on the PSP, is absolutely stunning both graphically and game play wise. Graphically, the game makers used every ounce of the PSP's computing power to make an exceptionally looking game. And it doesn't stop with the game play graphics. The cut scenes, the menus, etc. are artistically done very well.
The menus are also very easy to navigate leaving you with more time for flying rather than selecting options. Selecting missions, aircraft, etc. are very easily done with a few button presses.
Aircraft selections and options are numerous, which provides more depth for aircraft and military fanatics. The aircraft models are very nicely done an the game includes currently used aircraft (new and old) along with prototypes that may enter production in the near or distant future. The great thing is, you cannot earn by going through a campaign just once. To unlock all of the aircraft, weapons, and parts, you will need to go through the campaign mode multiple times and select different missions than those you selected previously. This allows for you to partake in numerous types of missions from jamming to escort.
All in all, Ace Combat X is one of the best flying games ever....not just for the PSP. Definitely a game that all PSP owners who enjoy in-depth games will enjoy thoroughly and its also very appealing to those gamers that like the arcade feel and just want to power-up the system and fly missions.
One of the PSP's best game!

Yeah, it's true. the graphics are good, with realistic explosions (for the psp), and when use the after burners, and when you fire a missile. The controls are SO smooth, which many people like there games to have. The voices are ok. Your operator sometimes sounds really shy, but gets a really "new" voice when something happens. The voices for the enemies (yeah, you can actually hear them) are pretty good. The game is also challenging, but if you know strategy, it will be easy. There are also many playable planes from the F-22 Raptor to the A-6 intruder, and a mixture of planes like attackers (bombers) and fighters. I say BUY IT!

This game is awesome! The graphics are incredible, the controls are polished, it almost feels like a staionary console. So, it's a little short with only 15 missions. I promise you will be playing at least one mission again. And talk about challenging! Also, you can be awarded medals, customize planes (about 8 out of 20), and play 4 player multiplayer. So why not get it? Too hard? Too compicated? Nope, easy everthing. Highly recommened.

This game is a lot of fun to play. The controls are easy to use and memorize. Learning curve is short, and you are up and flying in no time. The plot is entertaining, and the game play is great.

With out a doubt, this is the best flight sim game for the PSP system. I have played the others, but Ace Combat has alot more realistic game play. Also the game levels are challenging and the game seems to go on for a while. I have been gaming since 1981 and I have to say i'ts truely amazing what they can put together game wise for a hand held system. Ace Combat X SoD ROCKS!!!!!
Rather Good Port to the PSP Handheld

Ace Combat X : Skies of Deception brings the air combat world of the Ace Combat series to the PSP handheld. It's a rather good port of a quite fun series.
Ace Combat is, in general, a flying game involving modern style airplanes of a wide variety - F15, F18, F22, A10 and so on. You fly with a few wingmen, fighting for a fictional country against its enemy. The game is made up of a series of missions, sometimes air to air, sometimes air to ground, sometimes over sea, sometimes over cities.
The PSP version is less linear and more strategic. You can choose which territory to work on next. On the other hand, you don't have any control over your wingmen in this version - they usually try to stick close to you, but you can't issue them orders or outfit their planes.
The graphics are rather good for PSP abilities. They have anime style cut scenes but they are non-moving, stationary images. If you had to compare the in game graphics they would fall somewhere between Ace Combat 3 and Ace Combat 4. Oddly, the game doesn't do a good job of showing "how fast" you are going, with the portrayal of objects around you. So it can be hard to judge distances or dogfighting situations.
The sound is on the tinny side and has a new annoying voice which repeats the "caution" style alerts. The techno-beat soundtrack can get wearying after a while.
Trying to use the little stub joystick at the same time as the D Pad can be extremely frustrating. I know that there aren't many choices when using a PSP, but surely they could have come up with another combination of keystrokes that worked well.
In general, the PSP version is much slower than the PS2. When we play the PSP, then go back and play Ace Combat Zero, it's amazing how much faster the gameplay moves in Zero.
There is a multiplayer mode, which can include both other PSP players as well as computer players. If you have friends who own PSPs and this game, that could be a fun way to pass a few hours.
Well recommended as a playing alternative, for when you're away from your PS2!

I've never played an Ace Combat game before this one. But I've recently started playing a lot of PSP games and this one came highly rated.
I'd definitely say that the graphics are pretty for the PSP. Compared to other PSP games, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The music and sound are also crisp and clean.
The storyline takes place with cutscenes and work well with the story. Graphics are good and the VO is not hokey. Always a plus.
There are 15 missions approximately but some of the missions change based on what decisions you make in the game. That leads up to some decent replay value.
Speaking of replay value, you'll find yourself wanting to replay the game again. The first time through, you'll be struggling to have enough credits to buy more than one plane at a time. But the second time through, you can play with some of the more sophisticated planes. I remember struggling with some of the earlier missions that I breezed through with a better plane.
Some of the game play gets a little bit redundant. Flying against some of the harder fighters turns into nothing more than 10 minutes of circling and trying to get a decent missile lock. Not that I've wanted to stop playing but it does get a little bit frustrating. I've found that I've enjoyed the ground missions more where I get some more variety in what I get to shoot.
Overall, I'm very happy with the title.
