Definitely a group game!

To me, this is one of the best games you can get. I understand that for the epxerienced gamer this isn't exactly the best, due to it being easy to learn and all, hence my not-full rating. But, and this is from experience, get a couple of kids taking turns whenever Tarzan dies, trying to complete the game? It's absolutely timeless. My friends and I screamed at the screen, yelling at each other and laughing our heads off trying to master the surfing and skiing levels, looking out for the reels of film that enable you to finish the game. And when it came to the boss levels, nothing was more nerve-racking as we struggled to remember the code and click the button at the same time. We worked together, and we had the best time. I think this is what the Playstation should be for, for group games! And Tarzan definitely is one.

This game is not that fun.

Taming Tarzan Untamed

Intially I bought this game becasue I was at Wal-mart, and I decided that I wasn't going to leave the store without a new game... meaning new to me, not NEW as in just came out. Anyway It was sitting there for 20 bucks, so I grabbed it and said, "I wonder if this will be as bad as I think." I took it home and put it away... we kinda forgot about it, and Christmas was coming so, since it was still unopened, I wrapped it and gave it to my wife for Christmas... She didn't apreciate it... The first level was actually kinda fun, but then it got to the surfing part... this part was more frustrating than X2, and you have stupid Rosie O'Donnel yelling at you the whole time... Half the time I remebered to mute the TV, but the other times I had to sit in complete annoyance. This all would have been semi-OK, except that extra lives are harder not to get than get, so I could never just GAME OVER my way out. After I got so annoyed at Rosie O'Donnel, that I focused my Chi enough to beat the surfing level I was thrust into the wonderfully bad WaterSki level... This one was even worse that the Surfing... Here a strange Giant bird pulls you Tarzan into rocks, ill-tempered bass and strange acid moss that kills you in two seconds... My wife had to leave the room at this point... the sound of Tarzan's bones cracking when he didn't make the jump over the many tree branches was too much for her, not to mention the fact that the bird would drag Tarzan's dead limp body through five or ten more obstacles before the level would reset. At this point I put the game away for about 5 months.

Two nights ago I had this strange urge to play Tarzan Untamed again... perhaps I having withdrawls from school being out and not having to babysit 7th graders all day... maybe I am just a glutton for punishment, but I poped Tarzan back in the Cube and went for it... this time the stars must have been in alignment because I kicked some trash... I got through Level after level with narry a thought for how frustrating and bored everyone else was getting watchign Tarzan smack into rocks and slide through green crystals (apparently Superman and Tarzan have an aversion to glowing green rocks). I ignored the cries of my wife and child and kept playing.
Around this time the game informed us that we needed to go back and find more Film reels, or else they wouldn't let us go to the ancient Elephant burial ground... I went back to the surfing and skiing levels, and My wife went on-line to look up divorce attorneys. After a few hundred hours of Tarzan testing his skull strength against rocks and trees; I had enough film to move on.

At this point I think it is important to mention the boss battles. These are one on one fights in the tradition of Street Fighter, and MK, but instead of fighting you furiously tap on the "B" button until it reveals your "special wrestling move" which you must perform in a matter of mere nano-seconds or else start the whole "B" pounding again... now this button pounding isn't smooth or easy like one might imagine after having played a Mario Party game, no, this is hardcore, your finger will hurt after the last two bosses pounding... in any case if you happen to pull off this feat of controlled magic Tarzan switched into a cut scene of him wrestling or running away, or whatever...

When I got to the third Bungee level (the Baboon one) I had to run to the bathroom-- the game had somehow given me diarreah. My wife tried the level a few times, while I expelled the entire contents of my digestive tract into the toilet. When I came back Tarzan was still falling hoplessly into trees and rocks... this didn't change much after I took the controls back. Eventually I got the all important Film Canister winning the respect of the Baboons. They take their film VERY seriously.

Ok... so Then I got to the last level (before the final "boss" battle) I go crusing through the level dodging kryptonite and saving baby monkeys only to find Turk or Tantor... whatever the elephants name is... standing there to tell me I needed to go back to the start of the level and find the "real" entrance to the Elephant Grave yard. I went back to the start and having won the trust andlove of my Baboon friends I was alble to gain entrance to the Elephant grave yard...Here I went on the final Boss battle where I had to "fight" two people at once... This ended with a cryptic cut-scene that I think promised me a better ending if I found all the film canisters...

All in all my marriage survived and I found that Tarzan really was worth the 20 bucks I spent 7 months ago in Wal-mart... did I mention that It was about 2 A.M. when I bought the game...

I give it a Z+ or a Q- depending on what scale you want to use...

Awesome for the whole family

I bought this game for my 7 year old and he loves it. When I watched him play I wanted to play too. Same thing with my husband and my 9 year old. It is easy enough for the kids but at the same time it is challenging for the adults. It is hard to explain. It is a lot of fun. At 19.95 you would not believe how much fun it is.

the truth about this Tarzan...

this game isnt the worst nor the best platform action adventure game ive played for gamecube. there are only a few out right now such as pacman world and donal duck quackers( crash bandicoot clone). i would pic both of those games over this one. the graphics are very cartoony but not to bad. the worst part of the whole game is in level 2 where the monkey falls into the water and you surf some "rad" rapids. you have to listen to rosie odonell the voice of the monkey scream for help the whole level. after that level my hatred for rosie odonnel doubled. for a childrens game this game is actually some what challenging. its not very hard but i think tarzan would be targeted towards younger kids which i think would have a hard time with the game. overall the game is pretty short. but i dont even think its worth buying but maybe a rent. but if you want a good platform get pacman world 2.

fun but hard

Notice the difference between GOOD and GREAT. Anyway,
This Tarzan game is much funner than the original for the N64. Tarzan:Untamed features good graphics that if you put them all together you will think it is another movie, the plot and storyline is good, the boss battles are somewhat fun (all you do is press the buttons shown at the bottom). Think of PaRappa the Rappa mixed with Tarzan and great graphics and they you go. It is fairly easy, it has about 20 or so levels and once you complete the game, you must find 75 reels in each of the levels which are actually easy. I'd buy it for the cheap price of twenty dollars even if I played it before. But higher than that it wouldn't be worth it. It does not feature a multi-player mode. The bungee, surfing and skiing levels are fun, but, it's replay value kind of drops.

GRAPHICS: 5/5
Good graphics

SOUND: 3/3
Not great.

REPLAY VALUE: 3/3
Not too good in this part.

FUN: 4/5
The bungee levels and the surfing levels are great.

Overall, like before, get it for the cheap price. It is not your answer to a heart-pumping adrenaline action game at all, but cheaper is better. I also recommend:

SpyHunter
Super Smash Bros.
Luigi's Mansion
Pikmin
Sonic Adventure 2:Battle

Thanks for reading this review and I hope it helps you.

A decent game at best

This game can only be described as decent. It's not that bad a game, but it's not really great either. It's almost like the X-Games set in the jungle. Tarzan tries his hand at extreme sports, but not to much success. The action levels are decent, but leave a lot to be desired. The graphics and cinemas are true to the movie, and the play control is simple enough for anyone to pick up on it. The jungle like music is well suited to the game, as is the sounds of the animals throughout the forest. The game design itself is like a patchwork quilt. You switch between game modes quickly and frequently. Though the variety is nice, none of the action is too exciting. The younger crowd may appreciate this game, but that's about it. For the experienced gamer, this is just a walk in the park.

I wouldn't reccomend this one...

Okay, it's cool when you ski and bunjee jump. It is the COOLEST when Tarzan gets chomped by an alligator. I bought this game and now I am sorry I did. Look, if you really want to see Tarzan in action, see the movie. Otherwise, you would be much happier getting Super Smash Bros. Regardless of the above, you should not get this game if your age does not range between 4-9.
