A modern old-school classic

By using the light/dark polarity system and same-color chain kills for scoring, Ikaruga offers a surprising amount of depth and shows that scrolling shooters can still be fun when stripped of the usual extraneous features like weapon pickups. While not for everyone, gamers who enjoy frantic action will find a lot to like here, and an extra continue for every hour played ensures even less-skilled players will eventually finish the game. The graphics, while ported directly from the Dreamcast version, are detailed enough and have a cohesive style. Sound is average but doesn't detract from the overall experience, although an option to turn off the music would've been nice. There is no plot to speak of, but you won't have time to notice. This is the best proof I've seen that good gameplay doesn't age, just gets neglected for a while.
