You Should Really Buy This Game!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

This game is the best! You are one of two ships at the start of the game and get more as the game goes on. Eventually you get a fleet of six hyper-powerful ships ready to take on the head of the Manti invation force, The Manti Queen. (To tell parents, It Shoudn't be rated T. The worst part is when little green bugs pick up people in spacesuits.)If you like games like Starfox 64, Rouge Squadron (Star Wars), or F-Zero AX, this is the game for you.

There is more to Defender than shooting the Manti invaders. It is a strategy game that tests your abilities to fly a range of fighters and shooting Manti while strategically saving colonists and using tanks and missle crawlers to win battles. The games starts you out in a training school and then you advance to mission status. Each mission is on a new planet with great environments. Some of the later missions are extremely hard and can be a little frustrating, but usually that is because you need to tweek your strategy. The mulitplayer format makes this game a ton of fun to play with someone else and my son and I have really enjoyed it.

Fun and challenging.

This game is really well thought out. Take the old Defender, put it in 3D and here it is. It is at times difficult but in an "I'll get it next time" sort of way. I love the differences between the available ships. Different ships require different playing styles. Some will want to stick to just one while some like me will have fun playing them all. Not to mention that the ships are all upgradable which is a plus in any game. It is even possible to go back and play old missions once you fully finish the game so you can have fun going back and taking on the old missions with your fully upgraded ships. The strategic aspects with the colonist and ground unit placement is a wonderful transistion from the old game to the new. This is NOT a game for someone who doesn't like to think about stuff before they do it. The last level can get pretty hectic and you will probably fail a few times before successfully completing it. The multiplayer mode is a nice addition as well. My only dissapointment is that it was all over a little too soon. I say rent it first, either you will love it or you will hate it. It all depends on you.

Why this is only good for rental

You know all those old sci-fi movies you watched? This game takes every bad part of them and uses that as the story. The voice-acting is passable, at times, but the writing is horrific. Not even the graphics are that good. The cut scenes bear next to no relation to the game-play. If you only care about gameplay, You should know that, although fairly original, its not very good. Whether or not you get hit is mostly random, and collison with the ground and wall doesn't seem to relate much with the graphics. You also can't go back to previous stages you MIGHT have liked, and are often blocked by stages with the dumbest allies in the world. The multi-player mode is a touch better, but there is no balance between the aircraft. Co-op mode ain't too much better than that, either. This game might be fun for like, a 3 day rental. With this and Gauntlet : Dark Legacy, Midway doesn't seem to be making very good GCN games.

I remember the original game in the arcade (at which I was never very good) and the Atari 800 version (at which I was pretty good.) Overall this is a good game. Decent graphics. I like that it incorporates much of the original game's sound effects. A better point of view during game play would be appreciated.
