I truly enjoyed this game! Although the graphics is 4 1/2 out of 5, everything else is 5/5 like the plot, or even 6/5 such as the music (wow! the music is simply amazing).
If you are looking for a creepy game with a real twist to it - this is your choice as not only does it have plenty of puzzles and miles of walking but also a lot of action (shooting, fighting, etc).
A+++ game!
p.s. If you don't enjoy darkness in a computer game, may be you should try something else, because most of the time the characters spend in really dark places with nothing but a flashlight.

Before I had played any Silent Hill games I only thought that they were wanna be Resident Evils. I will admit it. This time I was wrong. This makes Resident Evil seem unreal. In Resident Evil there is a variety of weapons ; grenade launchers and rocket launchers. Tell me one city that is not full military like Washington DC that has either of those weapons.
Now lets talk about Silent Hill 2. There is a complete story where nothing is predictable. Everything is explainable in this story. All of the puzzles are solvable by reading the text and using thought. Now do not get me wrong I am not calling you stupid if you do not get the puzzles. This is one of the greatest games of all time and is even a Greatest Hits on the Ps2. There is a little time where you can explore the controls without worry of being attacked. And the first time you can be attacked you are against the weakest opponent and there is only one hit needed to kill him. The rest of the game is puzzles, horror, and fighting. You have realistic weapons ; board with a nail, lead pipe, hand gun, shotgun, and a rifle, you even get to use Pyramid Head's Great Knife when you find it.

I have to say that this is the best game I have ever played and I have played a lot of games! Its got everything- great graphics, awesome music, a very deep plot/storyline, and it's pretty darn scary! I highly recommend this game. But I must warn you, it's very, very addictive!

First off, The main mistake I did before playing this game is playing Fatal Frame. The reason I said that is Fatal Frame is so much more scarier, has a better storyline and more maneuverable than Silent Hill 2.
Since I'm reviewing Silet Hill 2 in contrast to games of the same genre, I will say that Silent Hill 2 has pretty good graphics although the character is a little hard to maneuver especially if you're being attacked by 2 freakish looking bodies simultaneously.
The premise of the game does lend itself to a spooky story ~ this person looking for his dead wife in Silent Hill. However, the bulk of the freakiness at the beginning of the game is the fog and not being able to see the monster until you get a bit closer. It's the typical bash the ghost with objects, guns,... blah blah blah. My only problem is the character swings weapons too slowly and by the time you hit one, the other one is spraying some stuff all over your already.
If you're looking for a horror game that's truly scary with a good story line, I would highly suggest getting Fatal Frame instead.

Silent Hill 2 does to disturbing what the original does for Horror. In SH2 you plat the role of James Sunderland, an emotionally shattered shell of a man who travels to Silent Hill after having received a letter from his dead wife. After stopping at a rest stop on the outskirts of the town, James descends into the darkness of his own psyche to battle the demons therein.
Gameplay:
This plays very similar to what you would expect from a survival adventure game with a slightly different, though equally enjoyable combat system. The interface is nothing to brag about, though it might be a bit awkward if trying to play through the keyboard. I used a Thrustmaster Dual Power gamepad that resembles the standard console gamepad complete with force feedback and analog sticks and was pleased with the response and familiarity.
Yet, what makes a Silent Hill game is the environment you play in. This game obviously takes place entirely within the confines of Silent Hill, both the actual and surreal. Upon entering the city, your first impression is the lack of residents. In fact throughout your quest you'll only come across a handful of the living who will either help or hurt your cause. That is part of the charm to this game. Konami knows that the best way to scare someone is to make their imagination do the work, and this game has that in spades. Whether it's day or night, blanketing fog or enveloping blackness will shrink your sphere of awareness to a bubble. Add to this Konami's use of uncomfortable camera angles and you'll be trying to peer around the edge of your monitor to save your skin.
Beyond the physical approach of trying to discomfort the player, the storyline adds a tangible psychological knife to cut into your comfort zone. In the original Silent Hill, the horror was surreal blood and gore, devils and cults. In this edition, the evil is human nature. You'll come across sociopathic murders, abused children, and suicidal personas to further enhance the feeling of wrongness that this game exudes. And that, my friends, is a good thing.
Graphics:
The motion capture in this game is great, and for being two years old, is has a spectacular lighting engine, which is of utmost importance since you'll spend most of your game with only a flashlight to cling on to. You even have the option to turn on the original noise filter from the console versions to add a little bit of old-time horror feel to it should you feel nostalgic. The textures are extremely well done considering it's a console port made for TVs and the effort put into just creating something that looks evil is outstanding. However, if you've played the original, it will look very familiar since they hit the nail on the head.
Sound:
Ahh, this is the one aspect that will scare you. As stated earlier, with the camera angles, you'll often hear something before you can see it. Heck, sometimes, there's nothing to see. Whether it's a whisper in your ear as you enter a room, or the thud-thump and the ensuing radio crackle of a monster lurking around the corner, you'll find your stomach leaping into your throat on more than a single occasion. The game even supports hi-fi 5.1+ dolby surround if you have the setup, though I prefer hi quality enclosed headphones for the ultimate in personal torture.
Overall:
Whether or not you've played the first one, this game is a must buy. With six endings and a mini-scenario to discuss the background of a character, it provides more than enough content should you want a replay. This is the kind of game you want to play late at night, in the dark, to truly experience the thrills that it has in store for you. Even if you're not one to get scared, you'll find it disturbing enough to suit your fancy.
Surprisingly enjoyable

I didn't expect to like this game too much; I'm not a horror fan, and my tastes run more to brain games like Riven. But this is an intelligent and versatile game that I found surprisingly appealing. The puzzles are creative and sometimes challenging (and can be set to easy, medium, or hard), and the run-and-shoot stuff is doable, especially if you do as I did and set the Action level to Beginner.
Acting and writing are far better than I expected in this genre. Graphics are ... good enough, though there's a heavy reliance on fog or darkness to keep the scenery minimal. The story is touching, if a bit trite in spots. The mo-cap characters are stunningly realistic. Controls are workable, though there's an annoying tendency to have the camera looking at the character's face so you can't tell what's in front of you or look in a specific direction. Replayability is excellent, with six different endings for the main scenario (two of them Easter eggs) and one for the sub scenario.
So when is SH3 being released for the PC?

This game truly rocks!!. I love the game play which is smooth and you can use the analog..for the first time in Silent Hill history...no more sloppy. This game has killer 3D graphics and in my view its better than the first and i think in my view too, its better than Silent Hill 3 to be honest (very sorry if anybody disagrees; dont believe me!..try playing both side by side and you'll see the differance between the two; graphic wise and playing wise). Anyways, this game should be with your PS2 game shelf..its that good!. Worth the time and the money.
Avoid this.

The gameplay is the worst I have ever experienced. That is what totally ruins the game. I had to use the gamepad since there is no mouse control. And the reason why I purchased the game for the PC instead of the Playstation was to use the mouse. Anyway the control is terrible with the gamepad. The character does not point in the direction of the joystick movement, making it a pain to navigate. I made the mistake of purchasing this game based on reviews. I played this game for about 20 minutes before calling it quits.
In my restless dreams I see that town...

You remember that joke in the Simpsons, "the answer to all three is fried green tomatoes" well Silent Hill 2 is my favourite, everything. Its my favourite game/movie/book/whatever. Its my best storytelling experience I guess, the greatest piece of horror fiction and interactive fiction of my lifetime. But its only a game I hear you cry. WRONG! THATS WRONG! Silent Hill 2 is experienced rather then played. This "game"(its more of a participatory quest really) made me scream out loud, not in fear exactly just in emotional overload. This is a rare work of art that is guaranteed to provoke an emotional and an intellectual response. It is one of a kind in the world of video games with its adult human drama and richly drawn complex characters. Most games are just "the martians are invading so just blow up generators A B and C". To me Silent Hill 2 represents the future of entertainment. A fully immersive artificial world peopled with real 3D individuals, a game that adroitly weaves and fuses the interactive gameplay elements with pure cinematic art in the form of second to none cutscenes. I could go on and on about this game but let me just say I've been playing video games for years I've played all the greats FF7 Metal Gear Solid Deus Ex etc and SH2 beats their ass.Tomb Raider has a wise cracking big boobed bond clone whereas Silent Hill 2s protagonist James is a man with levels, no two players will agree on how they percieve James throughout the course of the game, is he a innocent victim of more powerful forces or a detestable and cowardly villain. This sort of ambiguity is foreign to the usually rudimentarily plotted world of computer games. Like all the best works of storytelling Silent Hill 2 is open to interpretation. It deals with serious themes creatively such as suicide grief madness and death. This game scores full marks in all categories be it acting, graphics sound et al. It is a truly original and provotive work with layer apon layer of brilliance. From its deeply disquieting monster design, human forms corrupted and deformed beyond recogniton, its six unlockable ending four of which actually enhance your understanding of the main plot instead of being cynical tack ons for replay value, or its Francais Bacon meets Marilyn Manson asthetic Silent Hill 2 is a resounding success on all fronts. Most importantly of all you will mess your jockies playing this game and it will sometimes sit on your shelf unplayed not because youre bored with it but your afraid to walk the rusty corridors of Brookhaven or Toluca Prison again! BUY IT NOW!

I just finished this game, and it was one of my greatest game experiences. I was a big fan of the first Silent Hill, realesed on Playstation and i must say, that this second game is as good as the first one. Great and sad story, atmospheric graphic and sound. I can't complain about game controls, because they are almost the same like in the first game, and there was nothing wrong with them.
I also love the voice acting. So turn down the lights, set the graphic to maximum, turn on your 5.1 surround system and enjoy this great game.
