Go Zeo!

Even now, over ten years after the Power Rangers first hit the airwaves, the Super Nintendo is still the best system to go to for Power Rangers games. Of all the games on the system, the best is probably the one based on The Movie, but Power Rangers Zeo: Battle Racers (or simply "Power Ranger Racers," if you prefer) is most assuredly a good one.

If you've played Super Mario Kart (SMK) - and if you have an SNES, you really should - then you know exactly what to expect. PRR is really a glorified Mario Kart ..., with built-in weapons instead of weapon pickups. The kind of tracks you'll encounter are basically the same (including the beach level, and a level inside the Rangers' HQ that smacks heavily of Rainbow Road with its wall-less dropoffs). Some cars have limited blaster power, some have unlimited; the speed of the cars/cycles combined with the availability and range of the weapons help to balance out the vehicles. All of the blasters have some homing devices involved that lock onto the car closest to them, but only if you're within a fairly close range, which also balances out gameplay a little more.

This isn't quite as deeply involving as Mario Kart, because the 20-or-so tracks can get overly difficult after the second circuit. But for the most part, they're well-designed tracks, with some harder than others. It's those last couple of circuits that will truly get you.

Each character (ranging from all of the Zeo rangers, including Gold, to the villianous King Mondo and a generic Cog) has different strengths and weaknesses, just like in Mario Kart. The graphics are perfectly Ranger-appropriate and just as lush as SMK, and the sound is very nice, especially the rendition of the Zeo theme song that accompanies the game's startup.

If you like Kart racing games like Mario Kart, and you like the Rangers, you could definitely do a lot worse than this. This is one of the best SMK clones that the Super Nintendo ever had, and that's no small feat. A lack of tracks and almost no originality hinder the replay value, but you could do a lot worse than to steal from one of the greatest games on the system, and Power Ranger Racers' two-player races and cup tournaments will keep you coming back either way.
