This game is violent

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 11 / 12
Date: June 20, 2003
Author: Amazon User

I recently bought this game for my 7 year old daughter. What a diappointing game! This game is rated for Everyone. I thought since she loved the movie, the game would be fun. However, it is just a combat game with violence included. Shrek has to fight and kill his way through the maze. My husband who normally plays combat games did not find it interesting. I suggest you play before you buy.

Hard and Boring

Oh my gosh, this game is awful!! The first couple of levels are okay but after that the game is almost impossible, unless I'm missing something, this game is not very well explained, there seems to be no way at all to get past Level 3-1, ugh, I haven't even picked this game up in a couple months for fear of becoming extremely frustrated again. Not only that but the character controls are very slow and frustrating. The only good part are the graphics. Don't buy this!!

MOSTLY BORING AND REPETITIVE 6 OUT OF 10

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 1

This game simply isn't very fun. Kids might enjoy it, but gamers alike will most likely not even like it. I found this game to be at least passable, but it could have been made at a better quality.
WHAT THE GAME IS: It is yet another licensed side-scrolling brawler for a handheld. You punch enemies, lots of enemies and occasionally use a special attack against them. Plus, you do a lot of coin collecting, rescuing worthless characters, and repeating sections of levels and challenges over and over again. You probably don't need a recap for the storyline so I'm not going to explain it.
GRAPHICS: This game has the pretty 16-bit look, the highest point of the game.
MUSIC: Mostly boring and uninteresting, you'll want to sleep when you hear it.
GAMEPLAY: Punching enemies works okay, but it gets boring. The special attacks can take out some of the more annoying enemies. Playing through sections of levels over and over again isn't great, along with playing boring challenges. This game's responsive controls and good punching mechanics save it from complete disaster at least along with some moderately interesting challenges.
OVERALL: As a whole, this game really isn't worth investing in. Kids might enjoy it, but more mature gamers will not like it due to repetitive gameplay and boring challenges, but what's here is passable at least. But, you have better options for Game Boy Advance than this.

A Frustrating Game....

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 10 / 11

This game starts out just fine, it's actually a little easy on the first two levels. Two things to mention.... The information booklet that comes with this game neglects to mention how to activate/use the fairy dust. It only explains what the fairy dust does. After many frustrating attempts at trying to use the fairy dust icon to complete level two, I finally called product support. The help desk told me the intructions for this feature were not included in the game info booklet. Secondly, I was informed that level three was difficult to clear, and he (the product support guy) changed the game difficulty to 'easy' to get past it. I STILL haven't gotten past it! I purchased this game for my nine year old. Now I know why she has lost interest in the game. It is too frustrating and time consuming to get past certain levels. The rest of the game may be a lot of fun, like the beginning. However, it will take a lot of patience to find out. (And THAT's not something a lot of kids (or me!) has!)

Hassle but Quality Game

This game has great graphics and challeging Levels. Note that the other reviews talk about the difficulty of Level 3, and until I realized Shrek could run, it was hard for me as well. After learning that I got passed it on the second try. There is a Level that you need to escape from the castle/dragon and THAT was very hard. Having some challenges makes for a good game to me. Overall, if you know how to move the players, Shrek is a very fun and challenging game. Wouldn't recommend for younger kids however, possibly a little too difficult.

Shrek - Pretty Cool - Stuck at 3rd level

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 6 / 8

The graphics are cool and the game is not too challenging. It is still fun though and good for many ages. I have a problem with my particular cartridge though. No matter how many times I complete the first leg of the third level it will not let me advance. Otherwise pretty cool.

This is my first Shrek game, and I just love it!!!!

OVERVIEW
My mom's not a fan of Shrek (in fact we're not allowed to watch Shrek or Shrek 2), but she has no problem with this game. I've been wanting to play Shrek 2, but we can't do that either (unless we're at our dad's house) and so I took to the game boy advance games. This is my personal favorite.

GAMEPLAY
There are 3 characters you can control. I'm going to rate each character accoriding to speed, power, and the height of that cahracter's jumping.

Shrek
Power: Advacned
Speed: Beginner
Height of Jump: Beginner

Donkey
Power: Beginner
Speed: Advacned
Height of Jump: Advanced

Fiona
Power: Advanced
Speed Advanced
Height of Jump: Advanced

Take Fiona everytime that you can. The gameplay besides that consists of 2 basic challenges (a new challenge every level). In some levels you have a goal to achieve before a certain time limit. In most levels, you'll have to rescue and defeat someone. There are a few extra challenges. Like defeat a certain number of enemies.

FLAWS
Shrek: Hassle at the Castle is not without it's flaws. While in story mode, you cannot go back to revisit levels that you want to. You have to beat the game in Normal Mode to unlock a Level Select, and that menu's as complicated as hell. But, yuo can getaround this by setting the game to Easy Mode and defeating Lord Farquaad. Then, turn it to Normal Mode and load your game again. Defeat Lord Farquaad. Now repeat with Advanced Mode. That's easy to accomplish, at least.

GRAPHICS
Except for the fact that the heads of the characters' heads are humongous next to their tiny bodies, the graphics are done in an amazing way. The dragon looks the best. Donkey looks pretty realistic, also.

CONCLUSION
I highly recommend this game.

Great game, well worth the money

This game is highly entertaining and follows the movie pretty well. You get to play as various characters, depending on the level, and some characters are much better to use for some things than others. The game wasn't so easy for me that I could just breeze through it, nor was it so difficult as to be frustrating. There are quite a few dim environments, however, that even when playing in full light, aren't so bright. This is kind of par for the course, but shouldn't stop you from buying. :)

Mom addicted to game

My 8 year old daughter received this game for Christmas, but I can't stop playing it! It's challenging but manageable. It really is a lot of fun for children and adults alike.
