This is a great version of the Puyo Puyo series on a portable system. Having played this game on the Nintendo and Super Nintendo, it is great to see that this series has reached American shores under the Puyo name. This is my favorite puzzle game of all time, it is quirky and very addictive. This installment adds more obstacles and innovations in gameplay.
I guess I'm a little disappointed that the Puyos (the little slime things that fall down the screen) don't have visible eyes, as that added to the quirky factor, but oh well, that would be impossible to do on a GBA.
THQ has discontinued this game, so grab it while you can.

I just bought this game (along with 5 others, ugh) and this has become one of the immediate favorites for my 6 year old. (Tying with Pokemon Puzzle Challenge). First of all I changed the difficulty level to EASY, saving NORMAL and DIFFICULT for much later. There are 6 (or 7?) levels and you have to win your way up to them. Thankfully the game automatically saves itself, no passwords or silly things to write down. You play against the game opponent to match falling balls up, sort of like Tetris, but you can attack your opponents side by getting 4 to match. You can be neurotic and try to plan ahead with your colors, or just kind of guess where the best place is to land the balls. We managed to get to the second to last level after 2 days, which greatly reduced the frustration factor and kept it fun. There are also different options on playing, without an opponent, making the balls come faster/slower. Its really a neat game and will get used for those quick game fixes. The only thing that I thought could have been improved is the farther you get in the game, the more variety in balls there are, and sometimes they look alike when they aren't, like the blue and green, but that in no way is a reason not to buy it. We just got the new Gameboy light that they are raving about on this site, and maybe that will improve the view. For those of you who can't handle the fighting, side scrolling, dying 10 times a level type games, I would recommend this.

Looks like another Tetris clone? THINK AGAIN!

Ok, honestly I'm not into any puzzle games at all- I used to play few puzzles games now and then, however, bottom line is that I just can't get into them. Well, one day, one of my Japanese friends, bought a GameBoyAdvance with Puyo Pop. I was bit thrown off because I told him few of excellent games such as Castlevania, Advance War, Super Mario he can experience and yet he bought this Puyo WHAT?? Then he went on to tell me that it was so popular in Japan among guys and girls when he was in high school or something, so I decided to give it a try. And the result? Very Addictive.

The very core of this addictively fascinating game is this "Chain Combo" system where you have to think carefully before you place your falling pieces. You see, the thing with tetris is that you don't really have to think about how you would build your blocks and eliminate them, just keep on stack them and eliminate them whenever you have the right piece (unless you are after big scoring). However, PuyoPop forces you to think before you lay that slowly falling piece if you are going after chain combo, while being able to see what color pieces will be coming next. Of course, this game can be played as tetris, where you just stack them in group of four and eliminate them. However, the real fun comes when and only you play to build this chain combo, and trust me, you will have to think hard (ok, at least for me). I bought GBA Link to play with my friend, and trust me, and trust me, there's nothing like this (and man, I can't believe I'm 28..feel like I'm in jr. high again..)

The story mode wasn't that convincing, not at all, but it's better than nothing..yet I believe that this kind of corny story line might be perfect for kids, who know how to appreciate them (in fact, this corny story line might be just perfect for this kind of game..). I can just picture two people, dad and daughter, friends, brothers, sisters, and even lovers.. the possibility is endless... Don't miss this what could be the best multi-player game of all time and experience what the fuss is all about. Ok, I better go and practice to take him down with chain-combo attack!!

Simple yet addicting

I just love this game. It's so simple but I just can't stop playing it! If you plan to play it without anyone else it may get boring after a while though... but with a friend you'll be playing al night! But even so, you'll have a blast with or without a friend. Don't miss this one!

The best puzzle game of 2002 so far.

Puyo Pop is puzzle game. Simlar in play style of Tetris, which is basicly falling blocks. But thats where the similarity ends. You connect 4 or more little drop guys (puyo) of the same color together and they explode. Pretty simple huh? Not quite. They come in pairs and they are mixed randomly with other colors (5 colors). OK so what is the big deal. Tie this in with chain combos. A neat point pushing technique where one group of puyos set off another group of puyos. Nothing new huh? Well everytime you do this you build up your attack. An attack is where you build up so many points which (its hard to explain) in turn make block puyo that fall on your oppenents board to throw them off. Oh ho ho. I forgot to mention your oppenents. They can do everything thing that you can do. It can get pretty crazy. You can start of winning but watch out. Your oppenent could have some crazy-spectaculur attack busting chain just for you (I've seen some serious attacks)! There are some other gameplay techniques as well. This game has a lot of depth.

Well on to game modes. There are few. Which is my only complaint. There is the single player mode. You play as Arle and her weird little companion Carbuncle against the cpu and make your way through the stages. Before and after each stage you have a quick and quirky conversation with your oppenents. You can't save your progress though on stages but you really don't have to. Then there are the Endless modes. These are great for pratice. One of the modes just gives you an endless supply of puyo to pop. The other gives you tasks to complete in a certain amount of time. Then there is also the the multiplayer modes. Single or Multi pak play. And a neat gallery feature.

The music in this game fits the happy cheery but some what serious mood of the game. The sound effects get the job done. The graphics are simplistic but thats ok. Its not the type of game where you would see a lot of special effects. The puyo can been seen easily and you if any mistakes are made in playing they are because of you.

The controls are simple as well. A and B to turn puyo pairs and the d-pad to move the puyo pairs.

This game has a learning curve of 1 min and the depth of chess. I recommend this game to all puzzle game fans.

Finally! Puyo Puyo his the US!

Back in the 16-bit Sega Genesis days, there was one game that my friends and I spent countless hours playing that we never got sick of, and that was Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. That game was based on Puyo Puyo, a game that's seen numerous incarnations in Japan but has been oddly absent in the US...until now.

Puyo Pop (created by Sega's Sonic Team and released here by THQ) is what happens when you combine the core elements of Tetris with a fighting game: One- to four-player puzzle game addiction. Gameplay is very reminiscent of Tetris, in which you move siamese beans falling from the top of your screen into the proper place to eliminate them by setting up combos. Join four beans of the same color together and away they go. Doing so launches a barrage of colorless beans on your opponent's screen. Someone wins when their opponent's screen is filled with beans. Sound simple? It is, and that's one of the best things about this game.

Puyo Pop consists of a one-player story mode with 18 levels against assorted computer opponents, endless Puyo mode (play until you can't play anymore--like the original Tetris), and multiplayer modes in which you can link up to four Gameboy Advance units for some true carnage.

This is truly one of my favorite games EVER. (Now where's Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo??!) If you like puzzle games, definitely give this a spin! You won't be disappointed.

Very excellent presentation

I have the Japanese version of this game Minna de puyo puyo. It is the same game only in Japanese. Actually you can select between English and Japanese and it never asks you again so select wisely.

The graphics are clean and sharp and game play is impeccable. My only gripe is that the screen is difficult to see. I am beginning to think the Advance screen is just too small for so much detail. That or I am getting old.

...

for reference details see also Dr. Robotnic's mean bean factory, Kirby's avalanche, and others in the puyo puyo series. They are all the same game.

I think this game could be the Advances "tetris" and the game is even more fun when you challenge your friends.

I predict this game will come to Gamecube and dominate. Puyo coming to the USA has been a long wait, but thankfully it is worth it.
