Just like the good ol' days

I've been a fan of the Mega Man series since the first. I've played and replayed them with much love for each one. However, I must admit I missed a few after the X series debut. So, when I heard Zero was the sequel to X6, I figured now was a great time to get back into the game. With the recent success of Metroid Fusion, I knew the GBA was up to the challenge hardware wise for a SNES quality game. All that remained to see was if the game itself was on par or just another sequel.

Zero brings many welcomed changes, as well as a few unwelcomed ones. First off, you now play as the incredible Zero. While Mega surely has a place in the hall of fame for nearly every long term gamer, Zero is one amazing character. The way he moves, dashes, jumps, and slices enemies in half with his saber is incredible and a lot of fun. The elves system looks questionable at first, but as you play you'll realize just how handy the little guys are. Another change I love is all of Zero's weapons are limitless. Mega had some incredible powers, but what good were they when you couldn't use them?

However, one thing that bugs me is the way the powers are dealt. You gain ability from mere usage, and many of the game's big upgrades (health, speed, damage, defense) are dealt through the fairies. This means so long as you go through an old level stomping down low life enemies, you'll quickly gain too much strength and like many RPGs, have too much power. I much prefer finding abilities as the missions progress, which rewards exploration over repeat killing of enemies.

At the very least, low level enemies should have stopped giving skill increases and crystals rather quickly to force the player to move on. Even so, it doesn't hurt the game all that badly. Bosses will still be tough, levels will still be hard. It's not the end of the world, it's just annoying that a good idea could have been done better.

Moving on though, the graphics are every bit as good as you'd expect. They look SNES quality, and are filled with detail. Zero moves smoothly, and the enemies destroy better than ever. It's very satisfying to literally chop them in half with the Z-Saber.

Mega Man Zero has one of the better stories that I can remember. They all had their stories... but Zero actually makes you a bigger part of it. There's characters to talk to, choices to make, etc. The story is actually quite good and should be enough to satisfy. You're not going to be on the edge of your seat, but it'll at least let you know why you're where you are and what you're fighting for. That's all I ask.

Overall Zero seems to be a long game, filled with plenty of action and some good storylines to boot. The sound is good, the graphics are great, and Zero makes for a refreshingly fun main character. If you're a Mega Man fan, you should definitely check this one out. Even if the recent games have turned you off from the sheer number of sequels, you might find this one a much needed breath of fresh air. The Mega Man series still lives, and it's going strong.

Pretty hard

It's pretty hard but when you know what your doing it's fun!
What I mean is the first level is hard not the pre-level. See you go to the pre-level and power up your blaster and Z-sword.
you can get elf cons to help you but I still don't know how to use them though.lol!

Good things about the game
For a first in megaman history you can use a sort of beam sword.Get to use elf cons(But ask someone else how to use them because I still don't).Power your Z-sword and blaster. And a simple one that's oon the box...you get to be Zero!

Bad things about the game
You don't get to be X.X is the bad guy in this game!Roll's not in this game just a impersonater in this game(a cute porfesser, sort of like Roll, well the cute part). The level and bosses are very challanging.

When I first tryed this game I was expecting it to be alot better, but i still found it pretty good. The graphics are very good. The few reasons why one star is that Personaaly i don't like the story. And the other reason is that you die pretty easily unles you have things called cyber elves to get it higher.

Fun But HARD

I found Mega Man Zero extremely fun, until i had a hard time passing the first level!!! Of course the prologue is when Zero is awakened, gets the sabre, and saves a commander named Ciel. The next level afterwards is MUCH HARDER. i had to fight the boss to save Ciel in the prologue at least twice before i won, but in the newxt level, you are sent on a resq mission to save one of the recruits. The only problem is, Zero dies easily and quickly. ...

It's almost impossible to beat. Five minutes into the game, I die. Total frustration

An honest attempt to revive a dying series...

Mega Man fans have had it tough over the last few years, with the obvious decline of the original Mega Man series and the once great Mega Man X series (although Mega Man X Command Mission was one of the more recent brighter spots).

To me, Mega Man Zero is an attempt by Capcom to resurrect the classic Mega Man X gameplay that was lost soon after Mega Man X4. After X4, the series began to seriously suffer as it seemed Capcom just made sequels just for the sake of making them.

Mega Man Zero is a many ways a sucess, but at the same time is not. On the plus side, I was very pleased with the inclusion of many RPG-like elements that the game employs, such as the leveling up of weapons and how crystals act as experence points for the cyber-elves. The addition of an elemental damage system is also another high point (even if it makes some battles pathetically easy). In lacing the game with RPG elements (like they did in Mega Man Legends), Capcom has added a whole new layer to the gameplay.

The inclusion of different weapons was also nice, as you could change your weapon on the fly to adjust for certain situations. The fact you no longer gain abilties from enemy bosses isn't such a problem due to this.

Unfourtately, Mega Man Zero falls short in many categores. The fact you cannot revist many of the games locations once they are completed is very troubling - if you miss a cyber-elf in a non-revisitable area you are out of luck (and your going to have to play it again). This means you must know where everthing is and thus takes bite out the exploration factor that Mega Man games are known for.

While the RPG-like cyber-elf system is a very nice change, but many of the elves crystal requirements are simply too large. You'll easily double your playing time trying to get them all to the higest level (unless you cheat - and you shouldn't - as cheating is wrong! lol). Some of the elves are also too powerful (the one that removes all the spikes from the game is so cheap it isn't even funny).

Mega Man Zero also ditches the tired and true "stage" system that is used in practically every other Mega Man game. While this too is nice change, the fact many places aren't accessible later in the game and many of the places look nearly identicle (and very drab looking as well), it proves that the tired and true stage method is much better.

Storywise, the game is really nothing special. Even with the use of many story screen stillshots and the useage of more dialogue than one would usually find in a Mega Man game, one will find Capcom did more with less in the past Mega Man X games.

Mega Man Zero is a good addition to the Mega Man universe, but one has to wonder how many sequels Capcom will have to make before this series starts to crumble and wither like the other series (especially when your pumping out a sequel every year). Will the Mega Man Zero series survive Capcom's habit of smashing their game series with "the sequel shovel"? Only time will tell.

well i walk into the store hearing about a game that you play only as zero throught. i check and sure enough there it is "Megaman Zero" so i purchase it and return to my dorm to play. and to my great suprise it was a wonderful game. just hearing the old X music when Zero was revived gave me chills. i love how you level up your main weapons and also have little elves helping you throught the game. a different way to take it than the standard defeat one boss to kill the next but still a good buy.

Future 22XX... Neo Arcadia will rule... Not unless for Zero!

Well first of all this game is pretty decent as far as gameplay goes. On one hand it's a great side-scrolling adventure, on the other hand, it's menacingly challenging. I mean really, the second boss (notice the word "second") is really hard! Overall it's a great adventure, until you get to the second boss!
