I keep seeing this game but the price is low, it just came out, and I don't know anything about it. I think I might wait a while before I go and buy this.

I am a civil war buff and I loved the movie. The game is o.k but after a while can get kinda boring. It's worth the 20.00 dollars I spent!

BUYER BEWARE!

Today, I weep for PC gaming as a whole. The PC has been "graced" with what may well be the worst game ever made for the platform. There's a reason that licensed games are dreaded and feared by almost every serious gamer, and Gods and Generals is the embodiment, definition, and personification of that fear.

The idea of playing as a soldier in a game based upon the Civil War is a good premise, but that premise is about all this piece of trash has going for it. You'll adjust your graphics card, monitor settings, and game configuration to no end, wondering if these horrid visuals are supposed to be so damn bad. Alas, they are. There is slowdown on even the most highly powered systems, and the clipping is so bad, you'll wonder if perhaps you entered in a "walk through walls" cheat by accident. You didn't, but maybe the developers put one in by accident, and forgot to turn it off.

Don't adjust your volume or throw your speakers out the window, either. Those muffled muskets and fading of the music and/or sound effects isn't a hardware problem. Listening to Gods and Generals is like playing Doom on a 486 back in the day, and not having enough channels to mix the sounds and music at the same time.

In an age where Medal of Honor has raised the bar for historical FPS titles, the fact that Gods and Generals was even released is an insult. Your pistol's reload time is painfully slow, while the enemies seem to have lightning fast reflexes. You can only take a good 2-3 hits before you die, but your enemies can take many more, assuming you don't hit them spot on in the head. Even if you do, chances are they won't even be flinch after a musket bullet - even from the "precise" scoped model. Of course, you only get one shot from each musket before you have to find a new one, effectively making the musket a worthless one trick pony. Only your pistol seems to be useful, and I use that word with the utmost reservation. There is an upgrade system similar to that of NOLF2, but chances are you will grow bored of this so-called "game" before you get a chance to use it. There is a multiplayer function as well, but if you do meet someone who enjoys playing this game online, make sure you don't give them your phone number and/or address. Chances are high that they are a masochistic nutcase.

Gods and Generals will sell fairly well based on license, both to "Wal-Mart gamers" and psychotic high-school girls who love to hurt themselves. Only impulse buyers and people auditioning for Fear Factor should come anywhere near this game, and even they may want to put the game's twenty dollar purchase price towards something a bit less painful - like a root canal without any anesthetics.

If you are into the Civil War, this may not be a bad buy...

A Civil War buff myself, I've always wanted a first person shooter for the Civil War... and here it is! Although the music is annoying at best (5 sec. clip repeated over and over), I found if I popped in one of my Civil War music cd's as a substitute, the game still worked fine. The graphics are a bit weak, and it takes a bit of time to learn compared to other first person shooters, but it's a nice change from the ordinary. At Amazon.com zShop prices, this game is certainly worth the $3.50 plus shipping. However, I would avoid going to a retail shop and paying the list price of $20, you may be dissappointed.

Okay, I wouldn't give this game 5 out of 5 stars, but it certainly deserves more than two out of 5! Of course it's no Medal of Honor! I knew that when I bought it! What do you expect when you pay $10 for a first person shooter compared to a $50 Medal of Honor? I know the graphics aren't as good, but it is a very unique game that has authentic weapons of the American Civil War period, historical backgrounds on weapons and battles the game features, and even clips from the motion picture. I've certainly had my $20 worth of fun out of it! I highly suggest this game. The graphics aren't the best, but all the extra material certainly makes up for it! Overall, I give this game 4 out of 5 stars. It's hard to find a game such as this, especially in the Civil War time period. Try this game. It's certainly worth $10!!

Worst FPS ive ever seen

This is definately one of the worst FPS games ive ever seen. I spent $10 at best buy and probabaly got about 20 minutes of playing out of it before I threw it out the window. First of all It's got horrible graphics, there are invisible walls everywhere. Secondly you can only use muskets once, before you have to find a new one (the enemy uses it over and over again), or if you want to use the calvery sword you have to hit someone about 15 times by which time they have already killed you with there super fast reloading muskets. And lastly, the game is so short, in the 20 minutes I played it I beat the game. There are I think 5 easy levels. I think if you are going to spend $10 on a FPS save it until you have enough to buy Medal of Honor or Delta Force. Even to the biggest Cicil War fans. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

An unfinished product can't be reviewed

This is an incomplete product and therefore no rating can be given.

If you don't believe that Hollywood licensing with games is always a recipe for disaster, then take one look at this game. This thing was put together in probably only a couple of weeks. I am not exaggerating either.

The most aggravating thing about this "game" is how ineffecient the gaming engine is. With the low resolution graphics, this game should run smoothly on practically any machine. Folks, I am using a 3GHZ Pentium P4, 1GB RAM, and a Radeon 9800 video card -- and this game stutters whenever artillery is impacting the game field. Read any review and it will say the same -- the artillery impacts stagger even with high end machines. With graphics that, seriously, should run smooth even on a 486 this is unacceptable.

The game play is terrible. One Springfield, one shot. You can't reload, you must find another musket. The AI is horrible as well. You will face one enemy, five feet in front of you, and he will do combat rolls on the ground inbetween his shots (for no reason). He also is capable of reloading HIS musket.

Michael Shaara should seriously consider filing a civil law suit against Activision for this disaster.
