Gathering dust on a shelf

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 1 / 2
Date: December 10, 2001

I sometimes like adventure games, but this one has been hard to get into. I bought it, and have started playing it several times, only to put it down. Here at the beginning of the game, at least, I do not get a strong enough sense of plot and enough gratification to want to continue.

"Lotus Spring" was aimed at women, as an alternative to regular PC games. I am their target market -- a woman interested in games, but not compelled by the majority of games out there, which are clearly aimed at young men. That is still a great idea, but this product misses the mark.

Pretty graphics and music, but not enough fun.

Use it to prepare kids for a trip to Beijing

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 0 / 1

Sure, this game may not be top of the list, based on its plot flaws and lack of real challenge. Nonetheless it's a great tool for getting your kids interested in Chinese history and culture if you're headed to China soon. The setting for the game was painstakingly recreated from historical information about the Old Summer Palace (Yuan Ming Yuan) in Beijing. After playing the game, your kids will be much more interested in visiting the palace ruins while in Beijing. Buy it for its historical and cultural value, play it long enough to learn a little, and don't expect too much.
