Having just completed this game that I've had in my shelf for years now, but never played before now, I must say it was a bit of a mixed experience. The creators of the game have removed quite a lot of those annoying things we know from other games; running 50 miles back just to pick up the one item you needed but had no idea what was and various other small issues that tend to get annoying in RPG's. The graphics are also very beautiful, but because of the way the scenery is built up, you start using the minimap a lot while you play, which makes you loose out on a lot of beautiful scenery. I wish they could have included a "maximap" too, so it would be possible to see which areas you hadn't gone to yet, instead of just a tiny area. In addition to this, the biggest flaw in this rather "standard" RPG-game is the lack of a story. There aren't really any "quests" to speak of, it is just a linear story where you speak to a few people, and you sometimes accidentally complete a task they wanted you to do, but that you would have to do anyway to progress in the game.
If they had bothered to make a proper story for the game, and perhaps made some of the dungeons a bit smaller, it gets tiresome just watching your characters hack and slash their way through the same type of monsters for hours on end while the same dungeon never ends. Another issue is that the game is too "easy", meaning the usual strategy would be just to run in and attract as many monsters as you can, then sit and watch while your characters slaughter them.
So all in all, doesn't even come close to the Black Isle-games or NWN, but despite what may seem like a very negative review, I did enjoy the game enough to complete it, something I seldom do. Recommended if you liked NWN or any of the Black Isle-games, just don't expect to tickle your intellect. 4 stars.
Best RPG Ever!

This is my all time favorite RPG for the PC. I had it when it originally came out then got rid of it and moved onto other games, but nothing entertained me like this one did.
Awesome stress-reliever

I'd played through this game a while ago and decided to revisit it. It wasn't a disappointment even the second time around! The gameplay is smooth, landscape incredible, and the expansion provides better use of mages and easier switching between spells. If you're looking for an intricate, engaging storyline, you may want to look elsewhere. (There is a storyline, but it's more of a side-note than anything else.) But if you don't mind a twinge sci-fi/fantasy cheesiness, and you like bludgeoning hordes of hideous creatures until they croak (an excellent stress-reliever if you ask me), then this is a game for you. Oh, and the gameplay environments are stunningly beautiful much of the time. So you can bludgeon away at those evil hordes in the most picturesque places! What more could you ask for?
This one is great, DS II is better, look forward to DS III

I played DS II first and liked it so much that I got DS I. I expected it to be lesser in features than DS II but I am not disappointed. It was a good buy for me. I am looking forward to DS III. This games is great for this type of RPG game.
AN EXCELLENT ACTION-cRPG PACK!

This is an action cRPG that came out after DIABLO II and just before NEVERWINTER NIGHTS. And it blew both of them out of the water!
Not as deep as NWN, yet the story engaged you enough to make it more than a hack'n'slash. Not as dark as DIABLO II, yet blood fever will take hold of you once in battle. A number of innovative ideas made DUNGEON SIEGE a unique experience: the cinematic perspective, the original characters (who thought up...machine-gun shooting medieval robots!), the fighting-back pack-mule...
At the same time, both the enemies' and your company members' AI is well above par.
Graphically, this is a 4 year game yet it plays much smoother and it has further horizons than most cRPGs today. Even if, to any true cRPG fun, graphics is not everything (otherwise DAWN OF MAGIC would have been considered a great game), DUNGEON SIEGE is found wanting in nothing when it comes to graphics. Not until TITAN QUEST got released could any cRPG hold a candle to DUNGEON SIEGE! Tress and grass move as you pass by, water ripples as you step into it and wakes as you walk through it. Everything worn or wielded appears on the character; whereas, magic spells are not shabby at all.
The game also sports a GREAT CAMERA PLACEMENT (zoom capable and totally customizable) and has one of the BEST SOUNDTRACKS - the theme music will stay with you as the appropriate theme for any epic battles in the future.
Those of you who were (rightfully) disappointed with the truly bad and much shorter DUNGEON SIEGE 2 (I still cannot fathom how they managed to botch that one!), keep in mind that it has only skin-deep similarities to its predecessor. This is the one to buy!
Combined with its expansion, this comes out...more expensive than buying them separately in jewel-cases - so, I would recommend shopping around first. Nevertheless, you will enjoy it more than most latest games!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
