The adventure that soon becomes a frustrating chore

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 5
Date: April 03, 2002
Author: Amazon User

This very arcade-like game gets it's inspiration from Sega's own
classic Space Harrier and it's story line directly from the animated
1990's Giant Robo series. A strange doctor discovers a new power
source that radically advances society but mysteriously disappears
thereafter.

This review was re-written after many hours of gameplay
and will highlight some of the frustration experienced five or
six levels into the game. Out of the box it's a good looking Robotech
shooter, however, just start playing it awhile and you will see how
this game can riddle you with anger. If you thought playing Gotham
Racing almost broke your controller you will bash it to splinters
with this one.

Gameplay is teasing and very demanding. This is a jumping game
first and shootem up second. More times than not you will find
yourself just BARELY missing a critical jump to a ledge only to start
again from the very very bottom of the board. For that unfun
characteristic, two stars get taken off an otherwise 4 star rating.

Throughout the terrain you will find obvious surfaces you should be
able to land on but can't. It's like a literal glass ceiling where
waterfalls and vehicles are to look at but can't walk under or land
on.

Not being able to save inside a 30 minute long mission means
you will have to repeat your failures over and over again. I'm
surprised when they were doing the QA they failed to notice
testers smashing the controllers and throwing their arms up in
frustration because all of your progress can be lost with the
slightest twitch.

The control over your movements can be compared to a pinball
bouncing off rubber bumpers, your uncoordinated movements
are like mere flippers keeping the ball on a wild course.
The spastic nature of the jet pack will have you screaming at the
TV. I compare the sensation to trying to land a hot air balloon on a
moving car.

They made this game way too hard and the level designers were way
out of touch with what the character is capable of physically doing.

Frenzied Blast of a Game!

This game is an anime lovers dream. It captures the frenzied action of a Japanese anime mech battles. Your character is equipped with rocket powered battle armor. The control scheme allows for twitch action in mid air combat versus an army of mutant bugs and killer drones!

Nothing matches the action of tumbling and twirling in the air like a humming bird while boost dashing and performing aerial ballet and insane mid air combos.

This game puts you in frenzied action worthy of a hardcore Gundam battle in zero gravity.

I love this game. The graphics and tight and the action is insane!

Disapointing Game

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 2 / 4

I was pretty excited to play this game so I combed our local rental places until I found it. After half an hour my opionion could be summed up as "I am so glad I didn't buy this game".

The controls are a little difficult but my real problem with the game is that it just isn't fun. The level objectives are "kill all of the enemy units" or "find item x" and you find that you spend an awfull lot of time combing the map to find that one guy that you missed. Very boring. Also, I've read quite a few reviews that say the graphics are impressive. They're not. The graphics are actually below par for an XBox game, and the music is downright bad. I didn't realize how important music was until I played this game.

To sum up, pass on this game.

Sega game through and through

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Old school game that brings back the task of using your hands and mind to get through some very challenging levels.
If you liked Sega games of the past, than you will like this game. Reminds me of trying to get through Echo!
Graphics are great. Story is decent. Action is fast and furious.
This game will leave your hands sore, eyes tired, and mind numb after battling for hours in the different environments.

Excellent shooter

If you're into the old-school feel of arcade shooters from the past, you'll love GV. It has that intense, challenging feel, but with many great new twists. Your character (you can choose from 2) has the ability to propel him/herself in the air and rocket boost across great distances. You can pick off alien bugs from a distance, or descend to the ground level to take them head on with better accuracy. Either way, the game is a blast. Huge, flashy bosses will keep you on your toes, and I loved the ability to upgrade your armor, weapons and health items as you succeed in your missions. You're graded on how well you do (time, enemies killed, treasures found, damage, ect.) and it adds more depth. This is a great game for your Xbox.

Gunvalkyrie Rocks (your hands)

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Gunvalkyrie received quite a lot of insufficient grades from magazines like EGM and Gamespot, but the gamers themselves ... love this game! Infact I love it as well. It is absolutely difficult, especialy the frustrating controlls. It takes hours and hours before mastering the basic controlls and after these hours of playing your hands ache like hell=)
But after you start mastering the basics a smile forms on your till then angry face... It becomes such a great experience you can't stop playing anymore: I think I'll have arthrites before I turn thirty though but who cares I lived!!!! And played gunvalkyrie! BUY THIS ONE, you will love it as well!!!

Say goodbye to your controller

I cannot recommend this game to anybody (unless I want to see that person throw a fit). The only thing this game has going for it is its visuals. That's why I gave it a 2 instead of 1. The music is lousy and was so repetitive I had to turn the music volume way down just to keep from getting a headache. The story is as wierd as any other Japaneese anime of late. This game had the worst controls I have ever come across for the XBOX and that includes "Grabbed by the Ghoules". Even if only properly used the controllers took a lot of physical abuse in this game. This is because an often used move (thrust) essential to the game's play has been assigned to the left stick depression with no possibility of remapping. The problem with the thrust being were it is is that it HAS to be combined with a directional move to even work. Directions are also controlled with the left stick. So for example a basic move would be; push left stick in, hold it down, and move forward. That would give a forward thrust (rather than just a forward walk). Sounds simple enough on paper, but when you are forced to moved about the game like this for hours on end (thrusting quickly takes over walking) it gets to your thumbs as well as your controller I am sure. I would fail a thrust move often just becasuse it is physically awkward to perform (not just because I run out of thrust fuel). During those times I would fail to push in the stick hard enough to initiate that thrust. To add insult to injury this game doesn't end with just basic thrusts. To invoke more powerful moves from your character series of thrust moves have to be performed one after another without any break in combinations. One mistake and you start all over. To achive a "heightened" state from within your character 25 uninterrupted thrust moves have to be performed. Uninterrupted means that you cannot get hit by enemy shots or touch the ground. This is really hard to do in game considering the small amount of thrust fuel at your disposal. Throw in the aformentioned controls and it borders on impossible.

Gun Valkyrie is ok, but it is nothing compared to Halo

I was a little put out on this game. I gave it a good hour, and I tried to get into it, but I could'nt. The fine people at Sega, I would say, missed a really good chance to make a really good game. Its basically a point and shoot game, but it does alot of the pointing for you. The controls are frustrating and the whole concept seems un-original. Like I said, its ok. But not a great game.

Smilebit is on a ROLL!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 2

With Jet Set Radio Future and Gunvalkyrie out and on the XBOX, Smilebit shows their keen ability to create fun, original and stylish games, easily putting them up as one of SEGA's best game designers. Graphically, this game is what owning an XBOX is all about; amazing, fantastic and packed with detailed levels. Two characters to choose from, upgradeable weapons and insane enemies this game is a sci-fi riot. People have been complaining about the control, complex as it maybe and will take a little bit of time to master but does not distract from the gameplay one bit. Gunvalkyrie shines and is an impressive addition to anyone's library.

cool game

Although the plot doesn't make much sense, Gv is a cool game. Its a little short and the aiming [is not good], but good graphics, the guns and generally blowing the snot out of things makes the game worth playing, a good addition to the Xbox collection.
