Not Quite What I Expected

I'm sure some will decry my statement about this game, but I was disappointed with this game as a whole. Yes, the visuals are stunning and intricately detailed. Yes, it does have some innovative control schemes. It is also very fun to be able to climb any building around. So what do I NOT like about this game???? Well...first of all, after completing 3 assassinations, I found myself doing the same things over and over and over: Come into new town and find several high spots to scout out the surroundings, rescue citizens from harassing soldiers, pickpocket things from certain people in town, eavesdrop on conversations to get information. Everything about this game looks great when you first get into it, but after you get a good ways into the game, it seems you are living in "Groundhog Day". I was really looking forward to the release of this game, so I really don't like giving it a 3. However, after playing through a few levels, I have lost interest in even completing the game. I hate to say it, but this game was a HUGE letdown for me. I would suggest renting it and playing through a couple of towns before buying.

A let down

Other reviewers have noted that the game feels really repetitive and that they lost interest in completing the game. I agree (I have competed the game so that I could write this review), but want to emphasize that the negative "feel." I feel very disconnected from the character. This results from

(1) his movement ... sometimes he feels heavy and slow, it's frustrating to move him. The free run parts are exciting but they are not that interactive;

(2) the miniquests ... these are redundant, and resort to "timed challenges" to add difficulty which IMO is a bit of a cop-out. The deeper problem is that the mini-quests aren't longer run character choices they're just random events that don't really involve the mission you're doing except you for a few random lines of dialog.

(3) the action/stealth ratio ... I realize bought a game called "assassins creed" I thought the point of the game would be stealth kills and daring escapes. As it turns out, a lot of the kills are not stealth, but after big battles. There's no "economy of violence" principle forcing you to limit your killing (like thief and Splinter Cell had), there's no penalty to you at all for killing, in fact the game guides you to enter into big high-publicity fights. This part of the game just doesn't tick the way it should.

(4) no real risks ... my character has a lot of health. I can battle thirty people and be OK, or jump from a big ledge and lose most of my health only to recover it in a few seconds.

(5) Annoyances ... there is a lot of recurring sound bits. These take me out of the game.

The assassination missions are OK. They do get progressively harder, but more through battle elements than through stealth elements.

The game is a pretty decent fight and explore game, and the cities are pretty and the free-running is fun, but the game design has some major flaws.

I recommend you rent this before you buy it to see how you like it. If you're really interested, I think you'll see a lot of used copies available soon (not all of them played to completion).

It's tedious and short

The game's ending is great, you will feel great when you see it, it's a huge plot twist.

The fighting in the game is boring, making the game real easy, if you have problems taking down enemies in this game then you problably aren't good for games at all.

The graphics are out of this world, they're just awesome. The addition of being able to climb anywhere is great, gives a great sense of freedom to the game.

The game is really short, you can end it in less than a day, that would be fine for a shooter, but this isn't a shooter.

It's an average game, not a lot of replay though.

Where do we go from here?

In a nutshell, repititious. Once you complete a mission or two, you repeat the same actions over and over. Even the street characters in the various cities (and sections of the cities) are the same but dressed differently, ie, the street beggars, the local thugs, the soldiers, their little spiels. The beggars are especially annoying. Beautiful graphics, great story, love riding the horses and leaping off of tall buildings, but overall, a let down.

Sadly the game is not polished...

Cool and disappointing at the same time

Was really anticipating this game like everyone else. It was good, but kind of disappointing as well. I really like the climbing and scope of the game. It really is fun to free roam the large cities and climb the tall buildings. It is the best part of the game. I know some people aren't too fond of the sword fighting, but I thought it was cool. It's all about counter attacking. Assassinations are also fun, but wish players had more control in assassinating them wherever instead of places that are assigned after you complete the investigations.

The stuff that really bothers me, however, is the long loading and the inability to skip the story modes. You literally have to sit through all the talking if you want to play again. Watching it once was good enough. The loading takes too long and makes me nervous. I worry if it will freeze and it sucks every time it does. The new patch is supposed to fix it, but it still makes me nervous. Also the game can only save in one slot meaning if a friend wanted to play, he can't start a whole new game. If he does, it will erase your game. Don't know if people care about this, but my friend wasn't so happy about that. Some people say its repetetive, but it doesn't bother me. It's just those issues mentioned earlier that get me frustrated. If you're like those people, the game could become boring.

A great game that needs some improvments. Story was okay, but think it could have been done better. Some parts in the game really seem unneccessary. The LE is whatever. The toy figure is cool, but everthing else didn't really give me that wow factor. I was hoping there would be some cool featurettes on the bonus disk, but its videos I've already seen before. The quality also stinks. I thought they would have a lot of features like the God of War series. The short films also aren't all that great either except for a few. Nothing personal too them. I just think I could have done better.

Exactly what I expected from Ubi Soft and nothing more!

Assassin's Creed

Ubi Soft has become known to me as a company that puts out products they promise. When they state the game will display certain features, they deliver in spades. Assassins Creed is no different from this rule. They promised a new distinct control system, done. They promised a diverse and exciting way to explore the open environments they created, done and done. They said this game would make you feel like an assassin with iron in his veins and skill in his actions, well they didnt promise that, but its their too.

This game is a marvel to be seen, with your own eyes, while you control every move on the screen. And I mean every, the controls let you do more than just button mash. You are the assassin. If you own a next gen system, you should own this game. The grace and precision that the lead character, Altair, uses to climb and leap his way through the large cities presented here is in one word, amazing.

Never have I seen anything like this in my years as a gamer. I couldnt stop exploring and killing, because every minute spent, feels new and fresh. I simply adored this game since it was announced and I love it more that I have played it. Dont get me wrong though, the game has a few flaws, but the creators put so much in it, that they are easily either excusable or passed over because you are to busy to catch them cause you are having so much damn fun with what is awesome about it.

Assassins Creed - Its About Time

Assassins Creed is a pretty solid action game. Controls are smooth, the graphics are great and everything has a nice flow to it. Combat seems to be decent enough yet simple, and the controls are great. Its very easy to play, but with time you can master it. The terrain looks great, and character design is excellent. My only real flaw with the game is that Altairs voice doesn't seem to fit in very well. All in all, its an excellent game and its about time we finally get to play it.

Great game

Assissins Creed delivers solidly

Assassins Creed is the latest ingenius development to be released by Ubisoft who has delivered us already with several solid hit games & I truly feel that Assassins Creed can only be added along to that list as it puts forth every aspect of the next gen technology.
This game offers up many unique & memorable elements that are spread out over the storyline, graphics, schematics, gameplay & controls.
First off the storyline , Assassins Creed 1191AD takes place at the time of the Third Crusade. You take on the role of Altair, a member of the Hashshashin / Assassins Order. Your goal is to journey thru the lands of Damascus , Acre & Jerusalem ; assassinating nine men who are exploiting the hostilities of the crusade & to bring back peace & stability to the lands.
Secondly we have the gameplay which at times can seem to be repeatitive with some not so smart ai & batles, but for the most part it is intense & fast paced . The chase scenes being one of my favorite features as you run along the rooftops trying to shake the guards off of your tail.
Next the controls of which allow the gamer to be like a puppeteer with altair on the end of the strings & they are control each of his moves & actions. The controls are simple to follow & very well laid out for the gameplay.
Lastly we have the graphics, these are some of the most amazing enviroments that i have scene in a game in quite a long time, I almost feel as tho I am journeying right there with Altair thru each of these cities. These scenes from the rooftops as you look out onto the city are breathtakingly beautiful. The visuals are quite very impressive.
I am leaving out the plot twist of the storyline as not to ruin or spoil the game for those that have yet to play.
For those that were prince of persia fans then this game will definitely fill that void of the craving for a new pop game & those looking for a solid action adventure game then i highly suggest that you rent or pick up a copy of Assassins Creed & let your inner assassin be released. In a year that has been filled with FPS after FPS , I feel Assassins Creed stands out strong.
