More Hedgehog Mania

It always surprises me how classic video games can be even better than what has to be hot today, with all the overexposed graphics and gala. Nevertheless, during Sega's payoff era for the Genesis, it really did break so much ground, it was the highlight of their video game systems. Unfortunately, Sega was never able to capatalize after the Genesis. That is unfortunate that Sega now only makes video games for other systems. As for their mascot, Sonic The Hedgehog, he still lives on with so many systems now highlighting the blue speed demon is just amazing. Since 1991, Sonic The Hedgehog has become as popular as other legendary mascots including Mario, and Zelda. But the games Sonic was featured in, even brought more challenge than anywhere else.

The Sonic Mega Collection Plus, is a collection of over a dozen video games, unlockable and classic from the Genesis era, and the Sega handheld Game Gear era. The collection includes so many great classics including Sonic 1, 2, and 3, as well as other successors like Sonic 3D Blast. The collection goes further by including Sonic's Game Gear games like Sonic Chaos, Sonic Blast, and the mad dash racing game, Sonic Drift 2. The games have been remastered beautifully, but can be very difficult during some gamers, especially for anybody who hasn't expereinced the Genesis era. The game collection does fair very well, especially after the triumph, of the original Sonic Mega Collection for the Nintendo's Gamecube.

Sonic Mega Collection Plus is a great video game compilation for the Playstation 2. If you have the Gamecube, and bought the Sonic Mega Collection for the Gamecube, than it really isn't worth the money, unless you consider the Game Gear games here. The compilation here is great, and really good for Playstation 2 buyers. I honestly suggest this one.

Sonic still rules

Anyone old enough to remember SEGA's glory days with their 16-bit Genesis system will no doubt remember the old Sonic the Hedgehog games. Sonic Mega Collection Plus features all of the SEGA mascot's appearances on the classic console, as well as six titles from SEGA's portable Game Gear system. Genesis titles include Sonic 1, 2, and 3; as well as Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3-D Blast, and the puzzler Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. The Game Gear titles include Sonic 1, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Drift, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Blast, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine; and there are unlockable games including the Knuckles add-on stages as well as Comix Zone, Ristar, Flicky, and the Ooze. The games are wonderfully emulated and the Genesis games still look crisp and respond well, but not all the games here are great. Sonic 3-D Blast (one of the last Genesis games) is abysmal, and most of the Game Gear titles, specifically Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Drift, and Sonic Blast, are pretty shoddy. Despite that, there's plenty here for longtime Sonic fans to love, including the big plus of having the underrated classic Comix Zone as an unlockable, and a horde of extras as well. However, there are some glaring omissions here, such as the Game Gear title Sonic Triple Trouble, the Sega CD title Sonic CD, as well as the Saturn racing title Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters, and the 32X title Knuckles Chaotix. Despite all that, Sonic Mega Collection Plus is a must own for Sonic fans or for fans of retro gaming, and for the price of what you get here, this is a deal that can't be beat.

Brings back memory!

I grew up playing Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, and Sonic The Hedgehog has got to be one of my favorite games for the Genesis. So this game is perfect for me, all of the classic games are back, so I'll be playing it for hours and hours.

The game play is fast and smooth, nothing hard or mysterious to figure out. There is no puzzles to solve, no reading and no delay, just fast pace and rolling fun. The graphics are what you would expect from Sonic and the 16-bit era, colorful and so 2 dimensional graphics, great sounds and music also.

Overall you get the whole package, classic Sonic gameplay for many many many hours of fun.

Possibly the best reason to own a genesis back in the day

This was a great idea to bring the Sonic games to the next generation systems. You get a large variety of games to choose from. They were perfectly translated over and the controls are still just as responisve. I don't play all of the games. For me The Mean Bean Machine is the only reason to own this. The first 3 Sonic games is a great change of pace from the next gen. games coming out now. Alot of games are playable from the start and there's a few more to be unlocked.

Bottomline if you loved those old school side scrolling adventures or just loved Sonic. This is a great buy. Even kids who weren't around during the Sega Genesis period get a huge kick out of these games.

missing a game(the best one)

this game seem's to have every sonic game with the exception of my favorite one.....sonic cd(sega cd). that game has the best plot. you actually have to go back through time on the first two zones of each level and destroy dr. robotnicks machines. you have past present and future. you have to make sonic run really fast past the post(past, present, future)until he ends up in that time zone. of course you want to get to the past and destroy the machines because otherwise when you get to the third zone of the level even if you defeat dr. robotnick the future looks crappy because of the machines he set up. sonic cd had the coolest concept out of all the sonic games but was omitted which keeps this from getting five stars from me. with all that being said if you are a sonic fan this is still a good buy.although, i think including the game gear titles was a waste of time since they are just second rate versions of the genesis games.

Yes! This is great!

When I was younger, I played the sonic games on genesis and when our genesis broke, it made me really upset. The sonic games are the best games I've ever played and will keep you entertained when you are bored. When I saw it for sale for PS2 I was so excited and bought it. I brought it home and loved it! Just like the old one! The only thing that upseted me was that they didn't include Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Sonic 2 & Knuckles. I think that they should come out with more sonic games for PS2 and one game should have Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 2 & Knuckles. Overall, this game is great! I would definatly buy more PS2 sonic games if they came out. All sonic fans, will love this!

my boys love it

My two boys love all the sonic games, but this one has made a big hit with them. I think it is a bit more challenging for them, but one of my children is a child with autism so it may be more due to his capabilities than the game itself.

Great compilation, but some glaring omissions

Ahh, Sonic. What can I say that hasn't already been said? If you lived through the 90s then you know the little cobalt hedgehog and the amount of fun his games were. Sonic 1 was a revolution; Sonic 2 increased the gameplay exponentially; Sonic 3 was great but was kind of a mystery. There were obvious parts of the levels that Sonic couldn't get through. Why? We finally learned the reasons when Sonic & Knuckles came out with its backwards-compatability. Luckily Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 2 & Knuckles are accessible as unlockable games in this PS2 version. It's also great to play Spinball again, as well as the great old Game Gear titles. Notice I didn't say anything about the abomination that was 3D Blast.

But there are some missing games here that would have made this the perfect compilation. I'm speaking specifically about Sonic CD, the old Sega CD game that included time travel and an absolutely rocking soundtrack. This old game had its flaws (terrible loading times between worlds, for one), but it really is an integral part of Sonic's history in the 90s. Another missing game is Knuckles Chaotix. This game for the 32X was not that great (the controls were horrible), but again, to complete the history of Sonic it should have been included.

It would have been really fun, too, if they had somehow included the Sonic 2 Beta version! How many of you out there remember the lost Hidden Palace Zone?
