I stumbled onto 40 Winks late in the day; my path to video game fan was paved with SuperMario World for the Super NES and Croc for the PS1. While my boys were busy playing next gen games (PS2, XBox, GCube), I inherited a PS1 and started trying out obscure PS1 games in search of that magic combination that made Croc great (where are you now, little Croc?). Spyro is real cute, too. Anyway, I was buying weird PS1 games, and 40 Winks is a real TREAT! The graphics aren't the greatest and the movements are not as smooth as one might like in this PS2 era, but you get used to them after a few rounds. I played 40 Winks a few minutes a day for a few weeks, and it is awesome! The story is too cute, but you get to fight guys with no blood and no cursing, the levels are repetitive but can be challenging, and best of all, while you collect several different things throughout the game you're freeing the Winks from the evil Threadbare. I like a game where it is possible to do every little thing. Finally, this is a game that is just fun, with no horror or negativity, that one can enjoy playing after a tough day at the office. So many games now are dark and noirish, if not just plain mean and ugly...this is a respite from all that negativity.

I found this at a clearance rack and took a chance for my 3 1/2 year old...it's been a year and he loves it STILL. Of course I limit the amount of time in front of PS1...it's a treat to him to play once a week or so. The graphics are great - it's funny and really enjoyable throughout. Many levels and little discoveries along the way. I couldn't stand it so I cheated and found out some tricks in order to unlock all of the doors, etc. Even with help...it's still enjoyable over and over again. I recommend this for all ages!

I purchased this game for my daughter for her birthday. The game received great reviews and I assumed because it was rated E for Everyone that i was okay. I ordered the game and received it 3 days later (pretty fast), and was disappointed. The review does not go into detail about the object of the game. I never unwrapped the game but the color cover enclosured displays a skelton and monsters and tells the story of how this evil guy is trying to steal sleep from the children and give everyone nightmares. This may be a great game for older children, but I certainly would not purchae it for a younger group. It has a slightly evil undertone, that I was not comfortable with as a parent.

I like this game!

Okay, so 40 Winks isn't the most awe-inspiring game that you can put into your PlayStation console but it isn't the worst by far.

Yes, I agree with some critics that the talking alarm clock was a bit babyish but he didn't appear very often other than to give hints on what to do in certain parts of the game. At least you didn't have put up with his voice for very long which I have to admit reminded me of someone with perpetually blocked sinuses!

The story is as follows. NiteKap, the villain of the game just can't get to sleep. He decides that if he can't get some shuteye the why should any body else get a good night's sleep? He sends Threadbear, his cute but evil teddy-bear sidekick to capture the Winks; these are little creatures that give people good dreams. Instead he turns most of the of the Winks into Hood-Winks who are little green little critters that give make sure that no can sleep because all dreams will become nightmares! However there are still 40 Winks left but they are held captive and it is the player's job to rescue them and save the world from everlasting nightmares!

To move from level to level you must unlock doors, so along with freeing the Winks you have to collect cogs to open doors as well as find 12 keys to put into a clock, thus enabling you to battle it out with Threadbear and Co. for fate of the sleeping world,

The two characters you can play as are great. Ruff and Tumble are their names and I especially liked the fact you could batter your adversaries into oblivion with either a candleholder or a teddy bear! Some of the characters you can become were fun too, the Caveman, a Monster, a Ninja, a Robot and my favourite Curryman and his little sidekick Manic Mongoose. You don't get a chance to be him until RIGHT at the end of the game, which is a real bummer.

This game is one of Playstation's "nice" games. There isn't any blood and gore; the most frightening things you will come across are cartoon like zombies, spiders and green furry Winks to name but a few and let's be honest here, they aren't that frightening! The graphics are great, even better when played on Playstation 2, but I like my old trusty Playstation One so this is where it gets played most often! Learning to manoeuvre your character through the many differing levels takes practice but once you get the hang of it there will be no stopping you. I like the fact you can play this with a friend, but also on your own.

All in all this is a smashing little game. Not to everyone's taste but I think it is great, especially as you can often pick one up quite cheaply.

ADDITION 4th Feb 2003

With Playstation 2 Games becoming the norm now-a-days it would be wise for any fan of 40 Winks (or any other Playstation One Game) to start stocking up their shelves. A lot of games will be transfered to Playstation 2 but not all of them. Somehow I can't see the likes of 40 Winks EVER going onto Playstation 2 format which is a real shame.

Difficult, need guide book.

I bought this game for my daughter and she get's very frustrated with this game! It is difficult for a child to figure out what to do next. I wish we had a guide book/hint book for this game as it would make it a lot easier during those very (and I do mean very) frustating times!

If you have patience to try and figure this one out then go for it, but in all honesty I would not recommend purchasing this item, not even at a fantastic deal. Unless, of course, someone gives it to you for free.

NO EXCUSES!

AFTER PLAYING "40 WINKS" I REALIZE THE TRUE POWER OF... WHAT THE PS1 CAN REALLY CREATE. THESE GRAPHICS ARE AMAZING. THE MAKERS OF THIS GAME TOOK THEIR TIME IN MAKING IT. AND THERES NO EXCUSE FOR THE MANY CHOPPY, GLITCHY TITLES THAT THE PS1 HAS PRODUCED. DON'T GET ME WRONG THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF QUALITY GAMES FOR PS1. IT JUST MAKES ME MAD KNOWING THAT ALOT OF GAMES COULD'VE LOOKED AS GREAT, IF THEY WEREN'T RUSHED. AS FOR THE GAME PLAY, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED, IF YOU ENJOY THE GENRE AS I DO. BOTTOM LINE: LUSH GRAPHICS, GOOD GAME PLAY, NICE SOUND AND STORY.

40 Winks! a rare jewel :-)

Great game along the lines of Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazoie for the N64, but more kiddie, I would go into more detail, but you can read all the other reviews, do not pay any attention to those sad people who gave bad reveiws, I dont know what they where thinking. For [the price]. how can any one go wrong.

Fun, cute and just irritating enough to keep you playing

I bought this game basically because of the previews and the cute graphic remark. I love this game and have a 5 yr old and 7 yr old that love it too. There is a short cartoon sequence at the beginning while the mom is putting the little girl and boy to bed. You can then play as the girl with a teddy bear for a weapon or the boy with a candlestick as a weapon. Leave the bedroom and go to the playroom for training in using the controller or jump right in to the "other side". You go through a door and end up in the woods where you pick from 3 places to go in the beginning or if you punch the witch a few times she'll race you. You are looking for 40 winks(small creatures) and you have to collect a certain amount of "cogs" to open each new door. The trick is in finding the cogs and the jack-in-the-box looking toys so your player can morph into a caveman, a fairy, or a cavegirl who has some mean karate skills. You'll need these other characters to get into some of the areas where cogs are hidden. This game is loads of fun and just frustrating enough to make you throw the controller. :) It's a puzzle for the adults, a clean "fighting", racing, exploring game for the kids and the graphics are really cute.

makes me nauseous

I was really looking forward to this game because I loved Crash and Spyro so much. I think this could be a good game but it is hard to control. The view is not consistent and it makes me nauseous. As you move around it doesn't always pan with you. It is rather annoying to have to adjust the view manually. I got half way through the first level and had to stop because it gave me such a headache. I really want to play this but I don't want to feel sick every time. Too bad :-(
