Wow. The controls are great and animations are much smoother and realistic than the other playstation games. had knockout kings first - this is way better.

I have never played a video game with as much flexibility and control for boxing. The characters look pretty good for a PS1 title. But, if you are a boxing fan, this is it. It is one of the best "Build your own character" Ive ever used with the ability to do inter-racial heritage mixing. You can move and block and punch all at once. I've played the Contender, Knockout Kings, Mike Tyson, Punch Out, Ring King, this is definitely my favorite. They didn't really work too much on intros and victories though, which is what would be nice. But the game itself in play is definitely the best.

Great Game

This game reminds me of the first Knockout kings from EA Sports 2 years ago, except this game has much more to offer. This game in my opinion is better than Knockout Kings 2001 because there are so many more options here, especially when you get into the career mode. There are so many different features you can add to your fighter when you create him, which is also true of KO Kings. But this game takes it a step further, allowing many additional features that can be added to a fighter such as extra height(A heavyweight here can be listed up to 6'8, unlike the 6'5 limit in KO Kings), more weight, different facial features, different gloves and shoes. All this is nice, but when the game begins its all about gameplay and this game delivers with realistic and exiting action that is comparable to KO Kings. There are a nice selection of combinations that can be thrown, the illegal blows and taunts found on KO Kings are here, and its all pretty straightforward and easy to control. The fighters move fairly fluidly as well and the defensive moves are very realistic. You can also cumstomize the controls so that its easier for you to play. For fans of HBO Boxing, the announcers Jim Lampley/Larry Merchant are here which without question is a step up from the ESPN announcers found on KO Kings. There is also nice selection of fighters here including Roy Jones Jr. who isnt featured in Ko Kings. There are more venues here, Ballys Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Hilton are just a couple that are featured here, and not on Ko Kings. And you can play a single elimination tournament here which is a nice feature. I have only played the game a few times and already I am very impressed with it. If I had to choose between this and Ko Kings 2001 I would have to lean towards this not only because of what I have mentioned above, but also, if your a fan of boxing , you know that HBO is where its at when it comes to great boxing coverage and the announcers, the logos, the venues, are all include in this game. Great game.

HIGH HOPE, LOW LET DOWN.

I WAS DISUSSED WITH THIS GAME.EVEN WITH ALL THE OPTIONS,ACCLAIM FORGOT ABOUT THE GAME PLAY....THE GRAPHICS ARE OK BUT THE WAY THE BOXERS MOVE SUCKS.THE WAY THEY THOW PUNCHES IS TERRIBLE AND UNREALISTIC.I WILL GIVE ACCLAIM SOME CREDIT,THIS IS THERE FRIST BOXING GAME AND IT HAS A LOT OF AWSOME OPTIONS.HBO BOXING 2 SOULD BE AWSOME.THE COMBINATION OF KO KING 2001 AND HBO WOULD BE THE BEST BOXING GAME KNOWN TO MAN.

A solid game worth buying

I felt ripped off by EA when I bought Knockout kings. at first I was stoked that such a good boxing game was available.... until I played it for more than an hour or two. Where EA left off, Acclaim's HBO Boxing picks up. I played it for about 30 hours trying to beat the game with custom built characters. finally I did it! I won 4 belts! then I brought that character, saved on my memory card, over to my Dad's house where he had been building up his boxer too. We played all night. almost every game ended in the 12th round! It was epic! The build your own Boxer mode is Jam Packed with features.... like heritage blending and more!

hey jerry boy do you have even a shread of intelligence? if you bought the game based on these peoples reviews and didnt like it may i suggest you rent games before you buy them in the future? why dont you tell people why you didnt like the game. its called writing an intelligent review-but i guess you dont know how to do that. clod. as for my opinion ofthis game -in short, it is a good boxing simulation for playstation , at least the best there is out now. yes, it has its flaws but for the true boxing fan the gameplay and fighter selection as well as the realistic announcing make it a worthwhile buy for any true fan of the sport. for clods like jerry-may i suggest ready 2 rumble, a game that appeals to people of less intelligence. nuff said.

Jerry Pournelle its called personal opinion. You seem to be the only one here who doesnt like the game. I personally think its a good solid boxing game with a wide selection of options and it is without a doubt the best boxing simulation for the playstation right now. Knockout Kings put out another terrible effort this year and this game without question has tons of features that knockout kings lacks. the fighter selection is as good or better than knockout kings, the game play is miles above knockout kings and the commentary is done by the best in the business unlike the horrible second rate announcing done on knockout kings. its a fun game with a ton of options and any intelligent real fight fan would be pleased with it. the create a career mode is beyond anyting electronic arts boxing games have ever featured. you see jerry? its called a review...try growing a brain and see if you can write a reasonable, intelligent review based on the pros and cons of the game because by ripping apart others reviews without giving a single reason why you didnt like it makes you look awfully foolish. no one forced you to buy the game buddy, if you dont like it, try ready 2 rumble, a game that doesnt take as much intelligence to play, that may be more to your liking.

Good Game, but no Knockout Kings

I am a big fan of boxing and own all of the games dedicated to the sport. While I did find this game fun to play, I felt that it lacked certain qualities. For one, you cannot tell when you or your opponent is going to get knocked down or out; the only bar you get to see is the one that measures your stamina. The feature that tells you the fighters mindset helps, but it doesn't really go far enough into telling you when you are going to go down. Another feature that I have mixed feelings about is the referee stoppages. While I consider this a good feature for a boxing game, the stoppages are almost always perplexing, coming in right in the middle of toe-to-toe back-and-forth action. Another thing that I must warn about is that this game is incredibly easy. Right when I turned it on for the first time I went into career mode and knocked everyone out. By the time I got to the title match I was 45-5 with all 45 wins coming by way of KO and none of my fights went farther than round 5. The reason why I lost those five fights was because I didn't know when I was going to go down so I kept pressure coming when I should've backed off and saved myself. Yet another thing I didn't like was the ranking system, which is almost as confusing as that of the sanctioning bodies in the real sport. When I was approaching a title match, I beat Marvin Hagler (ranked #2) two times in a row and still found myself behind him in the rankings! I was also disappointed to see some of HBO's main fighters not in the game. The likes of Mosley, Hamed, Trinidad, Lewis, or De La Hoya are never found anywhere in the game, which is truly a disappointment. While the game does have Roy Jones, George Foreman, Fernando Vargas, Bernard Hopkins, and a few other notables, the rest of the field is made out of names like Barret, Rahman, and Pazienza, names not known by anyone other than boxing purists. There are definitely some good features about the game. The career mode is much more involved than that of KO Kings with more fights and more training options. One thing I especially liked was the Promoter Points which could be used to hire a more experience manager, trainer, or cutman. This is a very nice feature that should be used in every boxing game. Overall, I consider this a decent boxing game, but it is certainly not the best available. I would suggest KO Kings because it has better fighters and the game play is a little easier. This game is good, but it isn't great.
