The original Sonic on the GBA? It can't possibly be screwed up, right? Right?

The original, classic Sonic the Hedgehog from Sega's Genesis ported to the GBA seems like something that is impossible to be screwed up. After all, with everything else to grace the GBA the past few years, how could anyone possibly screw up porting the 16-bit classic to the GBA? Well guess what? Someone did. The first thing you'll notice is that the game looks like the classic speed fest you remember, then you'll notice the sudden slowdown and lag time that plagues the game from the moment you pop it in. Now I know there was some brief moments of lag time in the original game, but never anything like this. Not only does this nearly ruin what could have been a perfect port of a classic game we all know and love, it's pretty much a reason to leave Sonic Genesis on the shelf. You can do the Sonic Spin Dash now (you couldn't do it until Sonic 2) and the game includes a battery backed save feature, but the lag time kills what could have been a great little game on the GBA. All in all, chances are you've played the original Sonic on the Genesis or on one of Sega's many compilation games on various consoles, but for those who never took a dive into one of the most influential and original video game series' ever, avoid this GBA port and check out one of Sega's collections on the consoles.
It's an okay re-release

This GBA re-release of Sega Genesis' "Sonic the hedgehog" is not the same as it was. It has a couple improvements. 1. Save feature and 2. Spin-dash move (As introduced in STH 2). Now, these 2 additions are improvements. Yes, it's great that Sonic can now Spin-Dash out of Danger but in tis GBA re-release, Sonic Jumps way too high and runs way too fast which puts him in even more danger. And at times, the game moves very slowly. That is the only problem with this re-release. The faster running and higher jumping makes the game a little more difficult to play. The faster running and higher jumping and slowness take a little getting used to. I don't get it, on the GBA "Sega Smash Pack" with "Sonic Spinball" (ASIN : B0000631W9), the only modification is that the score and lives board can now be removed from the screen with the select button. This re-release just has too much modification but I think it is still worth owning. I hoe if Sonic 2, 3 get GBA releases, they won't feature modification which will make it go slow like this one does.

There are so many hard core gamers that are really in tuned toward constants from characters like Link from The Legend Of Zelda, Crash Bandicoot, and especially, Marion from Nintendo. Nevertheless, one of the forgotten charcters recently is Sonic The Hedgehog. Although these past few years, there have been some really great games involving the Sonic series from Sonic Adventure from the Dreamcast, Sonic Mega Collection, the nostalgic Gamecube disc that highlights Sonic's best games from the Genesis era, and Sonic Heroes. Now, it is Sonic's 15th Anniversary, and with Sonic returning for the newer systems, PS3, and Xbox 360, handheld gamers get there return to Sonic's Roots on the Game Boy Advance.
Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis for the Game Boy Advance, brings Sonic back to those classic eras from his days on the Sega Genesis edition. The gameplay features Sonic, trying to defeat Dr. Robotnik, later named Eggman, and free the animals from being enslaved as cyborgs. The game features all the classic levels from Sonic's early game, with a couple of new additions to the mix. One of them is that you can use the speedy spin dash move here, which was overlooked from the original Genesis era, and you can also save your gameplay on this version, and pick it up at the same level where you left off the next time you pace yourself against Robotnik and the search for the Chaos Emeralds. The graphics look as remastered and enduring as they were when it came out years ago. Unfortunately, die hard Sonic gamers might feel that this isn't as much of a new glimpse into anything exciting for Game Boy Advance.
All in all, if you've defeated the classic Sonic The Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, or on the nostagia compilations like Sonic Mega Collection for the Nintendo Gamecube, you may want to pass this game up. Otherwise, if you don't actually own those platformers, and are in the need of the blue Sega speed demon, than you'll definitely want to buy this game, and try to catch up to Sonic's past. I loved the game then, and I still love it now.

When I heard that this game was going to be released for the Game Boy Advance, I was very excited. I had been waiting since 2001 for the release of Genesis games on Game Boy. I collect all of the Sonic The Hedgehog games and I have been a huge fan since 1991. When I purchased this game, I was disappointed. The graphics are similar to the original version, but is rather too slow. Sonic games are supposed to push the limits on the game consoles by how fast he is, instead the ame has slowed way down. I do recall slow moments on the Genesis, but those didn't seem to bother at the time, actually they still don't. I am guessing it has to do with the memory ram, the genesis had 64 kb of ram while Game Boy Advance has 32. If haven't played this game ever, then I recomend it, otherwise it is not worth having in your collection.
Don't get this version

I bought this game to have my favorite classic on the go but man was it a waste of money. The past releases of this game on gamecube, genesis, Wii, etc. worked fine but when it came to the advance it had serious slowdown bug issues and even the music was a bit different and sounded horrible. The game is great but not for the advance. Get it for another system.
Very, Very Sluggish!

I was so excited to see this game on GBA but as soon as I played it I was extremely dissapointed. The game moves really slowly in parts of the game where there are a lot of graphics. I liked that they saved the game automatically and that Sonic could do the sonic spin but overall if I had the option to return this for the full price I would. I'd much rather just hook up my Sega Genesis and play it on there.
It's fun AND boring!

What happened to the origanal Sonic the Hedgehog? i'll tell you, it went straight to hell.
ok, it's been said many times, but i'm gonna say it again:::
Game moves Slowly.
Music is messed up.
not a challange, spin dash was added. ((genesis version was harder because it was made without this))
nop notch graphics? yeah right! hahah.
the only thing good about this game is that a save feature was added.
other than that it's nothing like the origanal.
buy this game on any other system BESIDES the GBA.
Sonic Mega Collection has this game on it. it's great, save 10 bucks and buy that game instead. plus, that game comes with sonic the hedgehog 1, 2, 3, sonic and knuckles, sonic 3d blast and more.
way better deal.

SONIC'S FINAL GAMEBOY APPEARENCE IS SONIC GENESIS 06 EDITION.I WAS HIGHLY DISSAPOINTED.ALL THE GAME IS SONIC GENESIS ON GAMEBOY!THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT YOU CAN USE THE SPIN DASH.IF THEY WERE SMART THEY WOULD HAVE ADDED THE HOMING ATTACK AS WELL,AND PUT IN THE CURRENT MAIN CHARACTERS(TAILS,KNUCKLES,AMY,CREAM,SHADOW,ROUGE,SILVER,BLAZE,METAL SONIC,AND THE CHAOTIX)AS SECRET CHARACTERS.ALL WITH THE SAME ATTACKS THOUGH.EGGMAN WHOULD HAVE STAYED THE VILLIAN.

I got this game on 12/25/06 and I LOVE IT! To stop the lagging, turn off the music and the sound effects on OPTIONS. Play the game without the music and SFX and it'll not lag that much. Overall, I think this game is fun. I'm still stuck on the Labyrinth Zone, but I still enjoy this game.
