Assassin's Creed

This is a comment on a previous user's review saying Assassin's Creed is locked in at a widescreen ratio-- I don't think that's true. You can change the resolution under the graphics option. I don't have a widescreen monitor and it works fine... there are no black bars or anything like that.

On the other hand, this game crashes a lot and I am running a 2.4 GHz Quad Core processor with 2 GB ram on Windows XP. I don't think it's my system, I think this (newly-released) version is just pretty buggy.

Put it this way. Play the game for about an hour and you get the whole thing. Basically you do the same thing over and over and over and over and over again. The coolest thing about this game is climbing buildings and stuff, and that gets very boring after about 20 min. Dang, I had high hopes to. Another thing...the dialog is terrible! Not only does it last FOREVER, you cant skip it! Guess the programmers thought a lot of themselves and their "Cinematic" skills. Stick to the 1's and 0's guys!

Okay sorry...one of the worst games Ive played in a while.

Good, but not great...

Pros:

- looks amazing
- fun to kill with swords and knives
- most assassinations are interesting and fun

Cons:
- at times the controls can be maddening, like when you want to disengage from a fight
- somewhat repetitive up until the last assassination
- can get confusing sometimes at what you are supposed to do

Bottom line - looks great, but the controls ruin it.

Can't shake it's ugly console past

I heard about this game being on consoles a while ago but ignored it since I don't do consoles. When I heard that it was out on the PC I thought I'd give my new 9800GTX video card a good work out and picked it up.
It would be hard for me to be more disappointed in this game. The interface is immediately and noticeably the very thing I loath about consoles; a kludge of menus that could be one simple menu if they were designed to be used with a keyboard or mouse instead of a limited device like a game pad. That alone made it hard to continue, but I tried to get past that and tried to get into the game.
The game's next huge failing is the lame setup and plot line. I bought the game thinking it was either history based or fantasy based, but the game actually uses some lame Virtual Reality cover story to validate it's linear game play and confined world. It also attempts to add in some kind penalty for "bad" behavior even though it's a game about assassinating people. Sorry, you can't have your cake and eat it too. For a game about assassination I was expecting a lot more violence and gore; I'm 33 I can handle it.

Pros-
The graphics are very impressive. The textures and modeling are top notch even though you still see some puppet like movement during the dialog cut-screens.
Ran without issues on my Intel E6600 C2D system with 2gb of RAM and the 9800GTX VGA card.

Cons-
Bad, made-for-consoles menu system and interface.
Lame setup that is almost insulting.
A game with the word 'Assassin' in it should have a higher body count.
I couldn't stomach it enough to keep playing it, but the friend I gave it away to said it's also really short.

Conclusion -
Nice eye candy but not enough to keep me from ditching this game and regret the money I spent on it. If you want to try it for your self wait until it's in the clearance bin.

Good but not Great....

First, the good stuff, great graphics (when my character first rounded the curve overlooking old Jerusalem, I felt butterflies!!! Superbly done guys.) Fight scenes (graphics and action) are also enjoyable- which is the meat and potatoes of what this game is all about. And the storyline is intriguing enough to keep me interested- probably why I originally bought the "director's cut" version. Also, I have Windows Vista Ultimate for my operating system, and it doesn't have any problem with the game.

Now as far as problems with the game, I haven't played it long enough to find all the bugs, but I have some difficulty interpreting the keyboard keys to the console controller buttons (which is an annoyance since the game prompts me to use console controller buttons-I need to read the manual frequently...) Also, I thought that I had saved the game at a certain spot only to find upon reload that I had to start the quest I had almost completed from the beginning. I am learning about the save spots and the locations still as well. I have to be fair and say I haven't fully read the manual, and some of the difficulties I am having may be a result of this. But I do recommend that you get a console controller rather than try to use the keyboard commands- this is really a detractor from the immersion factor....JB

Gorgeous environments, chases over rooftops and fun swordplay in this game (PC version)

I bought this game on Steam.
The video game was amazing. Here are the pros and cons that I saw:
PROS:
1. The outdoor environments are huge and all beautifully detailed. You also get to ride on horseback.
2. The buildings, mosques and churches and other architecture are amazingly realistic and I think these along with #4 below "made" the game. These really made it feel like you were in Jerusalem or Damascus. FREAKING amazing. I think this game is a landmark video game just because of the quality of the graphics for the buildings. Even the golden domes on the mosques shine with the sunlight. The game should get an award for this.
3. You will have many hours of fun because of the swordfights. Every time the player levels up, he acquires new swordfighting and combat skills. This makes combat always interesting and there's always something new to try out on your targets.
4. Both the "Bourne Identity" movies and the new James Bond movies have scenes where the hero has the climb walls and jump from roof to roof all with just his bare hands. In this game, YOU are Jason Bourne doing all that stuff. This and #2 "made" this game. When you're jumping from roof to roof and you're being chased by 12 guards while archers are taking aim at you, the feeling is exhilarating.
5. When you are in a city, you have a lot of freedom about where to go and what to do. It feels like "GTA" with horses and not cars. There is even a meter that indicates how "wanted" you are by the guards.
CONS:
1. The "Save a citizen" quests feel very repetitive after you've done a hundred of them.
2. You cannot swim. If you land in the water, you die. Why? If the hero is able to pull off the roof jumping stunts, why can't he swim?
3. You have to pick the pockets of armed thugs to replenish your knives. There is no assassin's store.
4. There is not enough variety in the dialogue spoken by NPCs. It becomes irritating to hear the same thing said over and over by towncrier-type NPCs.
Note to the folks at UBISOFT:
UBISOFT, be careful that the depiction of the Christian religion in your video games is fair compared to the depiction of other religions or beliefs. There are people who seriously consider that when choosing to buy your high-quality games or high quality games from another company.

Amazing Game

Assassin's Creed is a very fun play but it does have some pros and cons. Here is my list.

Pros:
Easy to learn controls
Fun fights
Good chase scenes
The freedom to do what ever you want
Realistic crowd and soilder reactions
Fun story line
Assianations are fun and challenging

Cons:
It is very routine
After mastering counter running is no longer needed after an assianation
Travling from city to city is boring
Guards will become very easy to kill after you gain rank 2 or 3
The secret character seems pointless
Getting to an assianation is only fun the first or second time

That is my review I would recomend buying the game for it is realy fun despite the cons.

The Creed

This is probably going to be similar to many other reviews out there, but this is my opinion.

Creed is very console orientated. It's selling points are it's visuals- I have a high end pc and can experience everything on full settings as smooth as silk, and it's atmosphere.

On that note, this game is perhaps best game in years to capture the atmosphere and 'feel' of a immersive gaming experience. It actually feels like you are walking around the Holy land, with great shadow effects and lighting. The people who move around you are the closest to actual human beings, without actually being walking digital people. Also, there are no edge effects with this. Everything is very smooth, no rock face is spoiled by a jutting graphic triangle or polygon.

The gameplay is far more simple than I expected, going on what others have spoken of. I can run up to a building, and infact climb and leap over buildings very easily. I think the only real issue is dropping from the hanging position, but that's just experimentation with keys (I'm PC version). Altir is an incredible acrobat and his motoions are some of the best I have yet seen. Having Altir climb and scale walls and buildings is perhaps the games most impressive feat. Dust and small stones fall away under his feet and as you move the camera around him, whether suspended or still moving you can view the people moving below him. That is the shiny end of the coin.

I enjoy the combat system, being able to engage multiple opponants in a realistic manner is fun. Three on one is far more exciting than one on one.

The cons. . well, there is not much in the way of interraction in the game. Sure, you speak to people, but it's not open ended, it's all mission and side mission based. Saving citizens from the guards to give scholar and vigilante aid is fine, but it gets a little bit silly after a while. YOu don't really want to jump down from up high to save somebody just to have some vigilantes appear that you really don't need just to have to climb back up again. Also, it defeats the purpose of stealth and unseen death when you slay guards, to evade them again and carry on like nothing happened. There is not much to 'chew on' in terms of story and side mission. I would love to be able to have a RP element. To perhaps drag your dead into dark corners, barrels, through open doorways. I would like to be able to purchase items from the market vendors, perhaps getting a better blade or having my blade sharpened .. simple details. Can you imagine something as applaudably immersive as Creed combined with something like Oblivion, the RP extravaganza? Creed innovates in a way that paves the way forward for future releases.

The last but not least of the 'issues' with Creed is that it is difficult to exit the game. You have to leave the memory, have your other character get off the table, then quite to the menu, select the name of your saved data and then exit .. that's far too overly complicated.

My advice, get this one in used condition or on sale. It's not that it's not great value for money, but Oblivion cost roughly the same amount and there was far more to experience with it.

It's certainly a worthwhile experience for a gamer, you will spend time marvelling at details and hunting for your next 'job' whilst enjoying the detailed vistas of the far East- get it if not for the experience of moving through the detailed towns and cities.

Three and a half out of five overall.

Needs more power than I have

I have a Dell Inspiron notebook with 2.2 GHz CoreDuo, 4Gb of RAM and a fast HD running Vista. Admittedly, my video card is a bit underpowered - it's only a GeForce 8400 with 128Mb. The game is virtually unplayable, even with all rendering settings set to the bottom. Be sure you have enough horsepower before you buy the game!

Entertaining

The story is amazing. The end is a bit abupt, but there's another one coming out to continue the story.

It ran really well on my Mac Pro with 8800GT (I have the older mac pro with the newer vid card) with Vista 32.
