Amazed in Disbelief

What to say... After Riven, I thought it was not possible to get any better. The puzzles in Riven were very challenging, yet very logical when solved. The graphics were amazing.

I got Exile the day after it was released, having been shipped next day air by Amazon. My friend and I started playing it on the 9th. We're both students, so aside from having class during the day, and meals, we played this game every waking hour until we beat it on the 12th.

What an amazing game. The graphics were stunning. The puzzles were yet again challenging, yet logical. After solving a puzzle, you weren't annoyed by the fact that the answer lay in some obscure clue. You were excited by the fact that you figured out what to do based on what you knew.

I don't know what else to say except, buy this game. Buy it now. The soundtrack and making of CD are cool, so I would say that this Collector's Edition is worth it. But, if you don't think you'd listen to the soundtrack, then you're probably better of just getting the regular version of the game.

The only thing left that I have to say, is I hope this style of game continues somehow. Whether it be a Myst IV, or a game similar to the Myst style. I want it. I will definitely buy any new game that comes out in this series. The Myst game series has brought much joy to me! :)

Beautiful but Too Easy

I am a huge fan of the world of the D'Ni. Read the books, played the games, blah blah blah. I had high hopes and expectations for Exile.

The graphics were beautiful, even on my 400 mHz G3 PowerBook. The VR landscapes rotated smoothly and the video was good except for the well-documented audio sync problem. Good stuff.

My only problem (and the reason for the low rating) is the fact that I finished the game in only a few days of not-very-intense playing. Riven took two or three times as long. Granted that some of the difference may be because navigation is easier in Exile than it was in Riven, so it didn't take as long to look around. But overall the puzzles seemed easier or just less complex.

In any case, if you are a fan, the game is worth it just for the background - it fills in some holes in the overall story of Atrus. We finally know what his sons were up to.

After the Book of D'ni comes Exile

The game is good. Not as good as Myst and Riven, but very good on its own merits. There's a shelf for Myst and Riven, then there's a shelf for Exile and then about 30 shelves down are the rest of the computer games.

Exile takes place roughly a year and a half after the events in the Book of D'ni. Rand Miller (co-creator of the Myst series) continues his role as Atrus (with acting close to that of Riven and Myst, much better than what he did for realMYST), now the father of a new daughter named (in the epilogue of Book of D'ni) Yeesha. As you arrive on Tohmahna (it's unfortuneately not explained how) you're greeted by Catherine, Atrus' wife whom you saved in Riven, and told to wait in Atrus' study... he should arrive shortly. While waiting you spot a note on his desk concerning security issues. When he arrives, he talks of a trip to the new D'ni, Reeleeshan, when a mysterious man links in and sets the study ablaze and links out. You follow through 5 other incredible Ages (I'll say one thing about this game, Presto may have put the greatest scale into it's Ages of any title in the saga... they're awe-aspiring to visit, especially "Veggie" and "Canyon".) to track down the villian and retrieve the Reeleeshan book. The story is the simpliest and most straightforward yet, which is why I took off a star, but don't get me wrong, it's more than worth purchasing.

The Collector's Edition features the Prima guide, a soundtrack audio CD, a "making of" CD, and a small pewter "Squee" toy. The soundtrack CD is worth the extra cost alone, as it's the only thing this new installment is deeper and more sutle with. Composer/Conductor Jack Wall plays with Robyn Miller's iconic themes and introduces a choir and orchestra to the mix. The game is the perfect difficulty for me, though those expecting the challenge Riven presented may be disappointed.

Unbelievable graphics. It's truly is a technological breakthrough. I'm running 192 megs of RAM and the game runs as smooth as silk .... no jerky video or lock-ups. Your aloud to look in every direction, and believe me .... you'll want to. I've only completed the initial sets of puzzles and they're challenging but not impossible to figure out. Just remember to hide the hint book that comes with this edition .... It's more rewarding to yourself if you figure the puzzles out on your own. Visually this is the best game ever .... I'll have to finish it before I decide if it's the best overall.

Excellent game, felt a little short

Although Cyan did not create this game, it feels very much a part of the myst world. Everything is in the classic Myst/Riven style. The game felt shorter than the first 2, but looking back I think that was mainly because the new VR interface wasted less time. Be warned that the last world is very short.

The evolution of the Myst series

Having played the original Myst and Riven, I have watched the technological advancements with awe. Exile has spectacular scenery and the added feature of 360 panning really brought you into the game. The music was enchanting as always. I found the puzzles in many places a bit overwhelming. While I was able to move through the Myst\Riven puzzles with a little thought and persistance, alot of Exile's puzzles were very complicated to me. There was alot more things to explore in Riven with the puzzles being an added bonus. In Exile, its all about the puzzles. I found this a little daunting. Overall, serious gameplayers will find this game a challenge but its not for weekend warriors.

AWESOME!

This has to be my favorite game in the series. If you are interested you really should play Myst and Riven first. I have read the 3 books which also helped with understanding the story. The whole series is very deep and engrosing, a must play for Middle Earth fans as well! A+

Careful with Windows XP

I didn't carefully review the system requirements before ordering this game. I run Windows XP (home edition), and at first I thought I was not going to be able to get it to work at all. The game seemed to install OK, but it would not run after the installation. However, I was able to get it up and running by downloading the patch (available at ubisoft), and by adjusting the compatibilty after right-clicking on the executable file.

If the above tinkering makes no sense to you, it might be better to not order this edition. But it *was* actually easy to do, following instructions available online.

The game speaks for itself. It's another Myst! And that is good.

It's O.K.

This game is ok, but my copy was very jerky. I called to have it checked and they said that it was normally that way. There were good graphics and the game was much better than the first
