I love this game, but the naysayers for the most part are also right

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 4

Pros:

* Minigame instead of dieing is great. It's simply acknowledging that many people exploit (ahem cheat) quicksaving and quickloading to inch their way through a game. If you are a casual gamer, this is what you do. The price that you pay for doing this is waiting to reload areas over and over. Really boring, this is more fun. It doesn't make the game less challenging to replace quicksaving with a minigame. A true "hardcore" gamer would already be reloading the area when he dies, so nobody loses by introducing this minigame. And I'm glad that someone has finally done this.

* The puzzles are not challenging, but they really do alot to relieve you from the feeling that you are doing a corridor crawl. Funny gravity, walkways, portals, spirit walking, flying around in a ship, it's a blast! And they do well to pace it out introducing the different elements to the game. Just as the novelty stars to wear off you're introduced to another trick. Also good pacing on introducing the different weapons, and the different enemies. All of this combined together ensures that the novelty doesn't wear off until the end of the game.

* That also means that I felt that the game was the right size. If it was longer it would have become boring.

* I loved the cinematic feeling to the game, and I liked how the two different elements (the mysticism and the aliens) were not disjoint, but instead made a unified theme for the story.

Cons:

* Enemies are dumb, predictable.
* While the weapons are effective, and even neat to look at, they don't feel like they pack a punch. Please, just give me a shotgun, I miss that feeling.
* I'm tired of the aliens invade plotline for shooters.
* The boss battles are even more tired. Who here hasn't played through several boss battles nearly identical to these before?
* The multiplayer is simply awful. There is almost nobody online, and why would they be? The servers are very laggy. I feel like I'm playing on dialup. And those maps are pretty boring too.

Get this game for the single player, it's a heck of alot of fun. This is a wait for bargain buy. The single player for any shooter is not worth $50, well maybe Half-Life 2. You only pay that money for a shooter if it has a killer multiplayer and alot of people are playing it.

WHAT A TEST... of my patience.

I finished PREY single-player, and if I had to sum it all up in one word... it would be TEDIOUS.

It seemed like every 15 mins, your character believes it is over, or almost over, and then that stupid woman's voice comes on, saying, "No! Its FAR from over!" I was just like... "Come on- End already!"

The AI sucks, the bad guys cant miss, and dying often is unavoidable but meaningless. So it boils down to dying a bunch, but regenerating your health in the spirit world, and then just keep shooting until everything is dead. But since you simply cant dodge ANYTHING, and you NEVER run out of ammo, it becomes a game of hide on the other side of a pillar (if there is one), and try to kill them faster and more times than they kill YOU. Having played and enjoyed many other shooters, I would say that this game really doesn't require much skill in comparison. There is no way to lose, unless one of the lame puzzles actually stump you enough to give up.

In the end, you always die... dozens of time, which makes me suspect this is why they HAD to include that health-regaining spirit-world-thingy. It had to be that easy to get back in the game, or you would simply get fed up and punch your monitor. SOOOOO tedious. Add-in the lame dialogue, and acting... and I couldn't wait for it to end.

Many players were pleased that the main character was a Native American. That just felt like a gimmick to give him the spirit-powers or something like it. Whatever.

Another main ingredient of this game was its puzzles, I suppose. But none of them stumped me for more than a few seconds. They just took time, and more annoyingly, they brought the unimpressive action to a screeching halt- which really didn't help. I'm sure some people enjoy this type of distraction in the middle of an action game, but it certainly wasn't the cream in MY coffee. I would have to laugh if anyone found them challenging or even stimulating. I wondered if they made them so easy to make the game accessible to a younger audience... but that couldn't be- what with all the cursing your character does. (The cursing didn't bother me, if you were wondering)

Anyway... you might wonder why I kept at it... Well, there are some favorable reviews here (if you enjoyed it- cool), and I heard the game was short (could have been much shorter), and now I don't have to wonder if it gets any better.

Well, I paid my 40 bucks, so I figure that I might as well try the "MultiPREYer". (Ugh.) From what I hear, it is very good if not vomit-inducing, what with the use of its gravity tricks and all. Puzzles should be absent here, and skill will be more of a factor since you are up against other players, but I still don't feel very excited, because the weapons also fell short of anything spectacular. They seem to have NO effect on anything they hit, unless that creature actually dies. They could learn a real lesson from FEAR, which really got that aspect right.

Well... here goes.

My favorite Single-Player FPS games: F.E.A.R. & Call of Duty.

this game has very interesting plot and it has the best sound and graphic i hav ever seen. but the game is kinda scary (for me, come on im only 14 wat can u expect from me).
the story is about Tommy (a cherokee) captured by aliens taken to The Sphere and tries 2 rescue his girlfriend and other imprisoners.
i like this game becasu this game is like no other games. from little thing such as flushin the toliet and turn on the light to teleports(cant really describe it but its different and cool). when u die, u get sent to a indian mythical land and kill spirits inorder to get back to the present. in the game u hav "spirit walk" where its like goin out of ur body with a bow, and go through obsticals(like god mode as some game calls it).

now heres the part where i dont like about the game. its gross (and sad, and strong language). tryin my best to have no spoiler, at the beginning, u see people taken as prisoners get their guts taken out while they r alive and replace it with mechanics. but then again, some people like that.

if u think this game is not for u, get Halo instead.

This game is sooo much fun. It IS possible to give the game the right challenge... just use quicksave and don't use the spirit death bullcrap that was made for the FPS-challenged console crowd. "No, I'm a grown up and I can use a mouse and keyboard, no I don't need the spirit death mode." Thankfully the spirit death mode seems to have been added AFTER the game was fine-tuned (only 2 parts toward the end need the spirit walk for me as they are too hard). You never have TOO MUCH health and the ENEMIES NEVER TOO HARD OR EASY... everything, the weapons, health, damage is balanced perfectly, unlike Half Life 2 where you could walk through the whole game without saving or worrying about dieing (pretty much). Remember.. don't use spirit death mode and complain about it being too easy!!! The only one's the game will be too easy for are the hardcore CounterStrike players who kick your rear-end so much you never want to play CS ever.

The game is a graphic artist's DREAM by the way, I have never been so inspired by graphics before (I'm a graphics designer). Just play this game to get inspiration for designs if you are a designer... it's great.

So no to spirit death!!!!!!
Say yes to Prey!!!!!!

Great for after work

I don't play FPS for the difficulty level or for the bleeding edge AI(though it definitely adds to the realism). I play for the fun factor and level design, and this game has these in buckets.

The levels vary in shape, size, organic or no, and mix in a few, easy-enough puzzles and brain teasers to keep the game from being a run and gun. The addition of playing with gravity was used creatively so that it adds more than just a cool feature but something that's a worthy addition to the game as a whole.

This game comes with a full recommendatoin to anyone who likes a good game with great graphics and licensed music!

Technical stuff:
My computer:
CPU: T2300 Core Duo
Ram: 1gb
Video: 256 mb x1400 (laptop version of x1300)
widescreen

Runs great at 1280x(whatever is widescreen...1024?)
with medium high textures.

This is a decently paced game with good graphics and an operatic story line. I was particularly struck by the ghost walker mode where the main character is traveling around in an out of body experience. It's kinda like Carlos Casteneda in space though perhaps a little "hokey", and without a coherent philosophical message. The intent is good fun but leaning a bit much on the Native American experience as a super power. The American Indian computer gamer is obviously not the target audience.

Relatively good FPS game with some neat twists such as walking on ceilings and walls gives a whole different dimension to 3-D! Well worth the money at the $20 or so I paid. AI is somewhat predictable, but will still give you a kicking if you aren't constantly on your toes.

One of the best games I've ever played in terms of story, graphics, breaking the tedium of traditional linear FPS. Great game.

Prey Stands Out

Prey is an excellent first person shooter, it's use of gravity effects and portals is unique and engaging. Level's are creative and of a good length. Weapons are pretty standard fare with a few twists that are enjoyable. Enemies are relatively common but plentiful and thanks to the portals they tend to pop-up anywhere. It has a lot of awesome visuals and the graphics are top notch. Sound is excellent and absorbing. Overall I found it an extremely enjoyable and entertaining game.

The Way It Should Be

I came to play Prey a bit late, but even by current standards, this is a fantastic game. It combines a lot of creatively managed elements that I've seen in other games in interesting and innovative ways.

It is primarily a basic run and gun adventure, but its a lot of fun. The graphics are quite good, and the art is amazing. The length is perfect, and the pace is very good, too.

But what made this game for me was the story. Its simple, but it drew me in and held my attention through the whole game. The characters are excellent, the concept is cool, and it even manages to have a great ending. I have been sorely disappointed by this particular element of several games lately- left with the feeling that the developers ran out of time or money and simply pushed their clearly unfinished product out onto the shelves anyway. Prey was therefore a pleasant surprise- it was clearly passionately crafted with care by talented people.

If you've waited as long as I have to play this game, now is a good time to give it a shot. Its fairly cheap and its completely awesome. I imagine I will be revisiting this one a few times myself.
