A little note

I know I am going to buy this game, and it looks AWESOME. If you didn't want to buy it for the game, buy it for the easy mod making engine. I have always wanted to make mods, but it SO DAMN HARD. Pariah makes it easy with a drag and drop interface. Now don't quote me on that, you have to have litte knowledge for the more advanced features, but this game makes it easy. A small side note however: Amazon.com normally has great prices, but not only is EB Games and Gamestop.com giving away a bonus disk with the pre-order of the game, but they sell it for $39.99 for PC. Don't buy Xbox. Seriously. You should just hack your Xbox and sell off the computer components to buy a new computer.

Pariah is Another Sad Example of the FPS Glut

Just a few years ago Pariah would have garnered praise and a decent fanbase. Unfortunately, in today's market, it sits squarely among a legion of also-ran first person shooters.

I found the single player game to be offendingly tedious. While the creators tried to tell an interesting story, it was lost in the uninspired level design and irritatingly awkward weapons. Props for the healing tool, though. The way the healing tool and health are handled is the only innovative aspect of the game.

The last straw for me was the fact that the single player game is checkpoint based. After ten tries of running over a bridge and methodically mopping up the enemies, only to die from a grenade I could never see coming, I uninstalled the game.

A mixed bags

I'm not finished the game but it's my first impression about it.

Single player :
No a lot to say, the game is a Halo 1+Unreal 1 with some fancy (and useless) new fx. In the first stage, you first mission is to find a woman inside a capsule... seem interesting but in a few minutes you are all alone killing a bunch of enemies. Why?... what's the mission?.. no mission!, no reasons!, just go ahead, kill and try to stay alive (is a hard task, cause a single grenade can kill you in no time)
The scenary is quite repetitive (may be in next level i can see more variety but i doubt about it).
The "zoom" is more like Swat4, giving some realism but bothering to any action player.
Anyways, there are vehicles, they are similar to Halo1 so it's cool and give a plus ^_^

So, i agreed with poena.dare and i'm near to uninstall it.

Level Designer :
Is AWESOME!. Is the more easyest level designer! (for fps). Is simmilar to another level designers, such Warcraft, Simcity and such, where you only need to put pieces, modify the terrain and play it!. For seasoned level designers this program can be limited and silly but, for casual players, it's worth!. You can design a level in minutes and you don't need to read the manual for it, is almost dumbproof.

So i agreed too with Sam Schuman

If you found boring Unreal1 or you dislike Halo1 then spend you money in another game. If you are a wannabe level designer then try this game.

Good idea, lackluster presentation

Don't be drawn in by the fancy-looking box with the beautifully rendered lady on the inside cover. The graphics in-game were only marginal when I first set to out to play this, so I went to turn them up, only to find them on high and very high. I told myself to just work through it, but any hope of that was shattered by the hideous repetition of the single player mode. The weapons in Pariah are ridiculous. I can't seem to find one that's suited for any situatuion. The main weapon, the Bulldog, is somewhat accurate, and that's stretching it. The only accurate weapon in the game is the sniper rifle (I'm assuming. I can't bring myself to play any further). Most of the weapons won't work if you're more than 5 feet away. I'm not even going to bother with multiplayer because I can't see it being worth my while. Do yourself a favor and get something else.

Not much to say - old premises, new box and price

I won't waste too much time typing what the other reviews before me have covered.

Suffice it to say -
Nothing new or exciting. Some nice graphics, but linear gameplay and so-so game AI.

Lots of hype here but nothing you have not played before. Save your money for GTA: San Andreas for PC(coming June 7th) and Call of Duty 2 and the other great games coming to pc this summer and fall.

Hungering for a FPS to fill the HL2/Doom 3 void, I made the mistake of buying this game. Instantly struck by mediocre voice acting and cliche writing, I thought other aspects might be better... but I was wrong.

Game play isn't horribly awful until you engage vehicles or shoot from them. The weapon upgrade system fairly interesting, but it's not enough to float a game of filled with lead weights.

Worst of all is the checkpoint only save system. They even force you to sit through the cut scenes every time you get sent back. The game might be survivable if you were able to rapid fire quicksave... but you can't.

Save your time, save your money, run away!

This won best of E3 2004 for a reason.....

O.k., this does have some weak spots. Especially the check-point saving only. But, other than that, this game is TIGHT! You are on Earth in the distant future. About 500 years or so. The Earth is a wasteland. Years of War and poverty have turned the world into a disaster. You are in the role of Jack Mason. An outcast doctor with nothing left to lose. Your plane is shot down while transporting a patient who is infected with a serious disease. From there the game is outstanding. The visuals are breathtaking. The acting is moderately good. The scripting is above average. The cut scenes are plentiful and well thought out. I LOVE THE M.A.P. EDITOR! You can even swap and/or share your home-made maps over the internet! It's very easy. The driving feature is primo. The physics are quite realistic. There are some cool ground assault vehicles to pick from, too. This is VERY bloody and quite riddled with language. So, the kiddies should probably stay away from this one. I think this game is great. Hey, what else could you expect? This game was designed by the same folks who brought us the powerful classic 'UNREAL'!!! They know what they're doing.

almost great

If you notice, this game is Far Cry 2, beta. Listen to the voices. It's the same voices from the original Far Cry. This game is actually pretty intriguing if you notice the physics. You can shoot down a tower and the bricks in it will fall in different ways depending on the angle you shot it. And when the bricks fall, they will kill the enemy below.

But, big mistake: the check point system on this game is what ruined it for me. You can spend an hour getting to one check point, and then get killed. After you get killed, guess what: you'll have to spend an entire hour just to get back to the same check point. Far Cry had a very respectable check point system, but in this game, you have to start waaaaayyyy back from an earlier check point. That ruins this game. Again, the physics are really good (you can break an armor plate and knock down a wall beam) and the physics are even better than HL2, but the ridiculous checkpoint saves ruin the game.

Good gameplay, abysmal story

Okay, first the good stuff out of the way. The graphics are great and the gameplay is mostly pretty fun. The game start to finish will take the average gamer roughly 5-8 hours to complete. The Quick Point save feature really didn't bug me at all as there was plenty of quick points and not too much to have to go through if you die. The areas are all well done and the weapon selection is very nice with a small complaint that the guns are a bit too big and take up a lot of the viewing space.

Now to the complaints department. Vehicles...why? They are about as useful as poop flavored ice cream. You get in your vehicle and drive a whopping 20 feet before you get out and have to clear some obstacle. Vehicles are more of an annoyance and something you drag with you rather than help you. It was much easier to get out and snipe the baddies rather than sit in the Road Warrior Style vehicle getting shot, rocketed and grenaded to death. Half Life 2 got it pretty right on the money with the vehicle not only being fun but extremly useful.

Now, it's pretty obvious Pariah is a clone and I don't mind clones at all. If a game type is good...then hell make more because they are fun to play. If you ARE going to make a clone tho, at least give the story a plot. Just because the game is powered by the Unreal engine doesn't mean you have to make the story unreal. It made absolutely no sense and skipped around to random parts where the two main characters (They were so uninvolving lets just call them Bob and Bambi) looked longingly at each other where they would quickly abandon each other in order to get lost or crash or...ugh, trust me the story sucked.

It does have multiplayer but doing a quick search of the entire world yields about 14 people spread out over 5 servers...gee, what a treat. It's like playing Jacks.

Overall, it balanced out with the good gameplay, weapons and graphics and craptastic story, plot, vehicle implementation to 3 stars. Okay to pick up if you are bore for about 5 hours.

Ehhhh

I have no idea how this game won E3 2004. It's a halo wannabe. The storyline is corny, the graphics not that great. It's something about some girl with a virus who is, pardon my french, a total b****. She runs off all the time and pops up again somewhere else.
