You have to consider this package a great deal. You are getting all three of the outstanding Metal Gear games for the same price the Metal Gear 3 Subsistence game alone.
The biggest knock on this deal is the fact it does not contain some of the extras that come with the other standalone packages. But you have to remember that this is the ESSENTIAL COLLECTION, not the ultra collection, or the super-duper amazing collection. It delivers on everything that it promises in providing the essentials, the main components of the games in the games themselves.
And since a "true" fan of the games would probably buy them as they come out, or at least buy them all individually, it is probably safe to look at this package as a way for people who have just recently gotten the gist of the series. Or those, like I, who are just getting around to enjoying these games.
Sure it would be nice to get all of the extra stuff that came along with the original packages, but you are looking at another three discs of content at least, which can seem a little excessive for a set like this.
So overall this is one of those offers that you really can't pass up if you a fan of video games, and want to enjoy one of the highest-rated, most established series on the market.
exactly as advertised

What you see is what you get - MGS1 for PlayStation 1 (black disc and all), MGS2 Substance for PS2 (with VR and skateboarding games) and disc 1 of MGS3 Subsistence for PS2. It would've been cool if they packed in the enhanced MGS1, Integral, into this box, but thats the only real problem I can find with this set. There are three classic games which add up to 30-45 hours of game time for $29.99. It's a great value and a great way to get ready for MGS4. Don't forget to pick up Portable Ops for the PSP too, its canonical.

Metal Gear Solid is a unique series of games. The series can appeal to a wide range of audiences: rpg fans to the hardcore action fans. The games are heavy in scenes, dialog, and action. It rewards more on stealth than direct action which causes players to think more about moving around than other games. The Essential Collection is a collection of the Metal Gear Solid series. It comes with three games: Metal Gear Solid 1 for the Playstation 1, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3 for the Playstation 2.
A review of each game.
Metal Gear Solid 1: This is the original game from the Playstation 1 platform. Some of you may have played the remake on the Gamecube. This isn't the remake. It's the original game that was released 10 years ago on the Playstation 1 platform. The game is amazing even at the time of its release. Watch out though: if this is your first time playing, you might find the graphics need to be getting used to. This is a Playstation 1 game, by the way. Every ps3 should be able to play this game.
Metal Gear Solid 2: This is the second game. This is the special edition of the game that was released after the original. It comes with loads of extras that the original didn't have. Basically, this is the complete version of Metal Gear Solid 2. I heard they cut out a few scenes in the game, but I haven't noticed anything wrong really. Also, PS3 owners of Sixaxis controllers, beware that there is a part in the game where the vibration function is needed. I don't think it is important to the story as I completed it, but you're going to miss out on it if you don't have the vibration. I heard you can turn off vibration and it works differently, but I haven't tested yet.
Metal Gear Solid 3: This is a step back in the timeline. This goes before all of the events in Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2. You look back in the past and it sort of fill gaps in the stories. I played this one first when it came out. This was my first Metal Gear Solid, and honestly, I was quite confused with some of the things in the story. I honestly think if this is your first time playing the series, you should go in order of release. The Metal Gear Solid 3 game is the special version of the game that was released. You get a cool free camera, which is a first of the Metal Gear Solid series. It's quite cool to free float the camera instead of having a fixed bird eyes view when moving. Some of you may have the special edition with two discs. Be warned, do not trade it in if you like the second disc as the Essential Collection only contains the first disc.
Overall, you'll love this collection. It's quite good for the money. Honestly, if you're planning to buy it, you better get it fast. Something tells me that this is in limited production and might become hard to find in the near future.

The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection is just that... essential. Coming just in time for the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, the purpose of this is to let those who want to absorb the story of the saga do so to refresh their minds for the concluding events of Metal Gear Solid 4.
The Metal Gear Solid saga centers primarily on an operative named Solid Snake. The first game chronicles his mission through Shadow Moses Island where he has to stop his former unit Fox-Hound from launching a Nuclear Weapon: Metal Gear. As he undergoes the mission, he discovers many revelations about himself and what the meaning of his very life could be.
Metal Gear Solid 2 picks up the story two years later in which Snake and friend Otacon form a non-profit organization known as Philanthropy. They're mission is to get photographic evidence that the military is developing a new type of Metal Gear. Unfortunately the Tanker Mission doesn't go as planned. Two years later, a Plant is built where the Tanker went down and players were treated to one of Metal Gear Solid 2's most controversial plot twists, they discovered they would not be playing the rest of the game as Solid Snake and they'd be playing as an operative named Raiden. Like Snake, Raiden's mission unravels many revelations about him. The second installment, in particular, showers some of the best plot twists in the series.
Metal Gear Solid 3, on the other hand, takes the series back to the very beginning where you control an operative named Naked Snake, who will eventually go on to be known through the series as Big Boss. During his mission he is sent to save an Operative named Sokolov before Colonial Volgin can get to him. Much like Metal Gear Solid 2, the game is divided into two parts, and the first part is a failure only for the second part to be one of redemption.
The Metal Gear Solid franchise is famous for its storyline of Solid Snake and other characters. The essential collection gives anyone a chance to relive the story with each episode back to back to back. Every story is told through amazing cutscenes with great voice acting. While some of the story sequences can get a little long (especially in Metal Gear Solid 2) they're filled with great direction and a lot of story to absorb. And you'll want to absorb as much as you can, because Metal Gear Solid 4 will reference all three games.
The gameplay has also been very memorable, evolving throughout the series. Along those lines, each game never makes you go about each situation the same way. There are numerous ways to approach each situation, and with several difficulty levels (coupled with a few other extras in the second and third games) each game demands replay. Even better is that for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 we got the Substance and Subsistence variants respectively.
If there was anything wrong with this collection, it would be that Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence doesn't include the second disc. While it's true, Metal Gear Online is taken down for Subsistence, the second disc did include the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. These are two games that can really help add to the Metal Gear saga. It's a small price, but for those who didn't own the original Subsistence and wanted to play the original two games, just know you won't get them with this collection. However, this probably won't be seen as a big loss anyway. The story of Metal Gear Solid can be well understood without the two original games.
If you don't own the Metal Gear Solid games and you'd like to know the story, this is a good investment. The fact that you'll get Substance and Subsistence rather than just the original Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater make this a very good deal indeed.
A few things missing, but otherwise...

I love these games and a chance to get the director's cut version of 2 and 3 and have everything in one package is awesome. I just have a couple of complaints.
First off, I really wish they had taken the effort to put in the Twin Snakes version of Metal Gear Solid. Having the original version isn't really the same. I know it was originally supposed to be a Nintendo exclusive but come on. Or, if need be, include both the original version and the TS version.
Also, without the original NES games on a disc, this isn't really the Essential Collection. Or I guess it IS the "essentials" but it certainly isn't the Ultimate Collection, which is what I guess I was hoping for.
Great Pack

Ok i just bought this and i was VERY dissapointed. All it is is disc 1 of mgs3 subsistance without extras, mgs2 substance (which i'll admit IS hard to find cheap), and the PLAYSTATION ONE version of mgs1! I have all these already! Now don't get me wrong, if you're new to the series and interested in metal gear then get it. Its a great deal! But also get a ps one memory card because your gonna need that for the 1st game. But if ur already a fan, you probably already have these discs. THERE'S NOTHING NEW HERE! I just wish someone woulda told ME that 35 dollars ago. All that could be considered new is the cover art of the game cases. That's it! Worth 35 bucks? Only if your new.
MGS: Not my favorite game.

This game is very difficult. The gameplay is very very very confusing and it's one of the hardest game I've played. However, when I play games, its for enjoyment and for challenge. This game is not so much enjoyable to me and the challenge is ridiculously crazy. I'm into Ninja type action game and been a fan since sega genesis era but this game is not for me. Recommended for patient people who likes to use their brain to play games.
I am a big fan BUT .................

i thought that having a complete set of one of the best games i played since ever is nice so i ordered this one but when i got it i was SHOCKED if you think that you can replay metal gear 1 or even 2 your are wrong.cus there are a big deference in the graphics and sounds and AI etc so if you are thinking about getting this one just to add it to your collection it is maybe nice but if you are buying this to replay the games really save your money.......
