A bit spooky

Great game to play at night in a darkened room with headphones! The Black & White game play was a great surprise, it adds to the ambience of the game. Not too difficult to play, lots of interesting characters. For you feline lovers beware, some of the town kitties will suffer awfull demises (no real kitties were hurt! only animated ones), my wife did get a little upset at one point BUT she did finish the game and made sure that the evil villain got his dues! Hope to see new titles from this author.

Know that I love to watch people play point-and-click games because I love the graphics and like the feel of the game being like a movie. I buy point and clicks so that both my wife and I can enjoy them. We also like a game that has a good mystery and a jump factor like any good thriller should. The lost crown does have a cohesive and `long' storyline. The only problem that I found is that the back-tracking and picking up clues is a little over the top. There was only 1 point where my wife and I jumped (no spoilers here) and the characters for the most part were well done. For sure well worth the price simply for the length of the game if not the beautiful landscapes displayed. Note, the environment is black and white which is a little much to get used to, but I for one love black & white photography, so it was a pleasant surprise with the implementation of watching the main character travel through the beauty displayed.

Here's how I conducted my start rating:
1) Pretty good scripting & dialog, the voice acting was well done
2) Graphics performed well, the implementation of actual black & white photo's was fun
3) Overall performance of the game to include installation was solid (only one glitch)
4) Storyline was good, long, but extremely convoluted; hard to keep track of, disappointing ending. Nixed a star over this point.
5) Clues, hints, and adaptability for the most part easy to follow (having a walkthrough will greatly help)

In the end, both my wife and I were not satisfied with the ending; however we did feel that we got what we paid for when it comes to game content and graphical eye-candy. I would for sure encourage other's to check out the game; in no way did we feel disappointed in paying $30 for this game.

Scared?

This is an excellent addition to Jonathan Boakes work. Unlike some games you can work out the puzzles with logic- no need to be a lucky guesser or download a walkthrough in pure disgust, only to find you need a pink pig with the left eyebrow missing, to unlock a cattleshed, to get a picture of the hero as a 12 year old, in order to open a safe. Scary - well it scared me in places - but then the best time to play is at night low light and definetely sounds on to get the full effect. I found Darkfall 1 scary - Darkfall II too easy and not as scary, but this is a game for grown ups and not for children - children might miss some of the nastier inferences or find the obvious ones too nasty - all depends on how you feel about cats. As for the ending - I thought this was the best so far - implying that there will be a further game. Can't think why you wouldn't buy this.

don't bother

Stupid, boring, boring, boring. I've been waiting for this game, esp. after all the 5 star reviews. What a waste. Looks cheap, you can't click past dialog you've already done and the character says the same thing in the same places every time. The worst offence is that it's not the least bit scary or atmospheric. Dark Fall was creepier. The main character is annoying to boot. A waste of 29.99. Going back to Loath Nolder which has much better sound effects, real options you can manipulate, and in first person, much creepier.

I really enjoyed the game, but my specific game was damaged so I couldn't get the full affect. But I would recommended it.

Another Jonathan Boakes Hit

I really enjoyed Jonathan Boakes' Dark Fall I and II, along with Barrow Hill, which he added his creative touch to, so I was thrilled to see a new adventure game that was all his doing. The play is challenging without being "resort to walkthrough" hard. It's also atmospheric in its English seacoast setting and the characters are diverse and interesting. This is also a game that would probably interest those that enjoy a good ghost story or fancy themselves as ghost hunters. There's quite a bit of use of ghost hunting equipment that adds some great supernatural effects. Overall, its an intelligent, fun, and somewhat spooky game and I was very sad when it came to the end.

Not to be missed

This game is outstanding. From the greyscale graphics with splashes of colour, to the control of play so only manageable areas are available for searching at any one time, this game is well thought out. It's not perfect, but which game is? Occasional grammar errors remain, you cannot cancel a conversation for instance.

The story has several sub plots and interest is maintained throughout. Ambient sounds are well done. Acting is adequate. Puzzles are fair and inventory based for the most part. The only time I needed help was with the single sound puzzle (I confess to be tone deaf).

The game comes on one cd and played without fault on a mid range computer. There is 24+ hours of play in the game, so it's value for money too.

This IS my game of the year so far. Highly recommended.
