The most fun 3D fighter on the Dreamcast

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0

Virtual On rocks!! The controls take some getting used to and the Dreamcast holds up pretty well to this end. The graphics are AWESOME, the action is FAST and the game is TIGHT! If you have finished beating Soul Calibur for the millionth time and you're ready for a real 3D challenge then pick this up. This game is a gem from the far east, don't let it slip by.

Did I mention that the animation is silky smooth, the graphics are some of best that the Dreamcast can produce and action is fast and furious. The frame rate never drops below the standard 60 and this makes for some great action. The time and effort taken to produce each Mech is seen in the level of detail for each character. The character backround stages are also exceptional which makes for some serious eye candy. This game looks GOOD!

If you had second thoughts then sweep them away and get this, you won't regret it!

This game is similiar to the first one on the saturn. The graphics have been beefed up a little, and there are more virtual ons to pilot. The only thing that ruins this game is that the control schemes are horribly and there is no way to set your own buttons. This makes some of the move almost impossible to pull off. Other then that, It is a solid game and a good addition to any dreamcast gamers collection.

THIS GAME STINKS

This game is awesome! I love the variety of weapons, characters, and arenas. This game deserves a rating of more than 5 stars. This game is not only challenging, but exiting and thrilling! My friends and I play this game every weekend together and we are pleased by the great graphics and game flow.

First off: I have NEVER played the arcade version of VO:OT. That's right, never. I've read about VO:OT and I've seen the screenshots, and that's all it took for me to want this game...BAD. From what I've gathered, the general consensus is that this game is *virtually* (sorry if that was a pun) unplayable without the arcade's twin-sticks. However, I think that this only applies to those people who have played the arcade version (from the number of people complaining I'd have to say that there's a lot of you. But, if you're looking for a little mech-based 1-on-1 combat action (ala those fight scenes from Macross Plus or Martian Successor: Nadesico) then this game friggin' rocks. I've even found myself saying "Passion slash" or "Gekigan BEAM!" (for those Nadesico fans out there)

For the longest time I've been looking for a game that captures the essence of anime action sequences. And my search ended when I found this game. It is sheer BEAUTY. The colors, the animation, (okay, the music can get kind of Mario-ish, but at times I just want to crank it up), the sound effects. It's all so fluid, bright, and booming (respectively). The controls are a little difficult at first...but that kind of why there's a training mode. You can set the computer to stand still, move (but not shoot), or deal out destructive punishment. I think I've figured out most of the essential controls in about a day or two while using the training mode (still trying to figure out how to do a quick quick-step and a dashing close-in attack). It sure ain't a picnic, but then again a picnic never made you say 'Gekigan BEAM!'

This game looks like it's a cross between Soul Calibur and (insert favorite mecha anime show here). And, it is. Simple as that. There should definitely be more mecha-action games. Especially for us dreamcast owners.

By the way, did I mention that the guy who designed the mecha for Macross designed the mecha in VO:OT? No? Well, he did. And it kind of shows...

VO:OT The reason I bought a Dreamcast.

This is one great game! Virtual on is by far my favorite game ever! It has excellent graphics, sound, and most of all controls.

Most people think that VO:OT can't be played without twin sticks. This is simply not true. The DC controller is a great way to start out with virtual on. Most attacks and combinations can be learned on the controller. However, without twinsticks it is IMPOSSIBLE to play this game at high levels. Being a member of AVC (Auburn Virtual On crew) I am fortunate enough to play with some of the best Virtual On players in the US and believe me, twinsticks ARE necessary at tournament level. Some moves and combos are completely impossible without them and will never be seen unless you have them.

Please don't let this discourage you from buying this game! It takes alot of time, months or even years to move up to the highest levels of playing. I've been playing for well over a year and I'm just now getting good!

And besides, it's a beautiful game! The graphics aren't quite as nice looking as the arcade version, but it's as close as you can get on a home system. It's especially nice with the VGA box, which I'm sure Amazon sells:) It never slows down, and the control set and timing is exactly like the arcade. You can't ask for a better translation. It's a shame that activision removed network versus and customize modes. And cable versus is only accesible through a code. But the game makes up for it with a great training mode and plenty of options.

I hope this review has helped in the decision to buy this game. This is a game that no Dreamcast owner or giant robot fanatic should be without!!!

What's all the fuss it's an awsome game

Well most people have been complaining about the twinstiks but YOU DON'T NEED THEM they are not necesarry it took me 10 minutes to get better than i was with the twinstiks. the people who have been whining about the twinstiks are probably BAD GAMERS and don't know how to use the controller in any other game

Twin sticks make all the difference!

As a VO:OT fanatic and a member of the "Auburn Virtual On Crew" I can say that the game play is seriously compromised by the controller. But there is good news! Twin sticks were produced by SEGA for the Dreamcast! They usually go for around $99 on other web sites. Hopefully Amazon.com will get them so the game can get the high praise it deserves. I play this game daily either at home or in the arcade and the "twin sticks" are a must have! Playing without them is like playing DDR without the dance pad!

The reason the game is so difficult without the "twin sticks" is the game was designed around them. Also if you are really hard core like me check out the "DC link cable" it allows you to link 2 Dreamcasts and two TV's for vs. play just like in the arcade!

All in all I give this game the highest rating for complex and innovative gameplay (with the twin sticks), infinite replay value, stunning graphics, and loads of fun and competition with friends!

Never played in the arcade, but so what?

Let's get a couple details out of the way -- I've never played VOOT in the arcade, and have never played it with Twin Sticks. Yes, the Dreamcast controller takes some getting used to, and I bet it IS easier with the Sticks -- but I don't have 'em. Result: still one of the best DC games there is (and there are quite a few). I understand now why this thing is such a hit in Japan. Not a flicker of slowdown, even with multiplayer splitscreen. There is amazing depth and strategy here, in addition to unbelievable speed and action. You can't just zoom around, firing blindly -- the CPU'll roast you in a second. You've gotta think and have a plan, moreso than Dead or Alive 2 or Soul Calibur. VOOT is different in every sense of the word. We're lucky to have this game in the States, people. Very lucky, and THANKS to Activision for bringing it here. Yes, it is missing online capability as well as the design-your-own-mech mode, but the gameplay itself is the same. Think of it as a genius cross between a fighting game and a shooter, and you get the idea. Incredible mech designs, weapons, and animation -- and it's difficult enough to keep the single-player mode interesting. Granted, it's not for everyone, but give this thing a try and marvel at the atmosphere it creates through graphics and sound. Yet another Work of Art for the Dreamcast. Give it a shot.
