The Force is With the Dreamcast

While it took me a couple of days to break down and buy this game, I am so glad I did. After reading mixed reviews on the game, I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I do.

Jedi Power Battles is one of the most entertaining games I have bought for the Dreamcast in the last couple of months. The gameplay is addictive and keeps you coming back for more. While I am not the biggest Star Wars fan out there, I have always wanted a Star Wars game where you actually play as a character and not a ship.

The graphics in the game, minus a few noticible glitches (in appearance, don't affect gameplay at all) in the first level, are very sharp and crisp. Texture detail makes you feel like you are wondering around the actual sets and locations of the movie. The special effects used for the Jedi powers and explosions look amazing...very clear and stand out. Character model designs and animations are great, but the lack of character animations make it difficult to tell if you have accomplished a combo move. Aside from that, all of this graphic goodness runs at a constant 60fps.

On the sound side, the music, voice, and sound effects are terrific. The audio totally pulls you into the game even more. The music is very clear and powerfull, and was pulled right out of the movie.

Overall, this is a great game that even when you have completed it, you still find enjoyment when playing it over and over again. The 10 levels, the 5 main characters, and the bonus characters you can earn, make this a game that should last a long time and stay enjoyable, unlike many other games on the market that once you finish, you have no interest in comming back. This is a great game, I recommend it to everyone. Even if you are like me, someone who isn't a big Star Wars fan, it's still a great game to play.

Mmmm Platformy goodness from LucasArts

So often the videogames made from wonderful films or tv shows just don't get much right at all, gameplay, atmosphere etc. However when said film is Star Wars and the franchise is handled with respect a game like this can be achieved. The dreamcast version of this platform adventure game simply shines. The seven training missions are fun and they get you ready for the main event. You control one of five Jedi (more unlockable including the master of menace Darth Maul) through 10 levels of droid bashing, laser deflecting, and general Jedi mayhem. There is a versus mode in the DC version that allows players to use JPB as a fighter also, or you can take the main adventure with two Jedi side by side. The game really feels like a classic old platform game on steroids which is part of its appeal. Once you see the glowing graphics and hear the swing of your light saber you will not be able to resist the power of the force.

Well probaby out of respect LucasArts has created some great games out of their franchise's legacy. This title is no exception what was decent on the playstation becomes incredible on the DC. The frame rate is an excellent 60fps and the music and voices sound excellent graphics are sharp and bright and the light sabers quite simply hum. Gameplay is varied among the main adventure game which can be played two player simultaneously or the duel mode where you can play it like a fighter. Also included are seven training missions. With unlockable characters and each Jedi having distinct strengths and weakness the replay value of this title is very strong. So get ready to feel the power of the force cause once you swing that lightsaber you'll be hooked.

Flawed but Fun Gameplay

If you've played the PlayStation version of Jedi Power Battles, then you already know what to expect from this installment: a basic action game where you journey through levels destroying enemies and jumping from platform to platform (a good gameplay comparison can be found in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games of old). Other than vastly improved graphics and slightly better play control, Power Battles for the Dreamcast doesn't feature any good improvements.

To start, the added Training Mode is too short and doesn't even tell you how to perform certain actions such as reflecting laser shots back at the enemies (to do so, block just before the shot reaches you).

The new VS. Mode, where two players can duke it out, is uneven and boring. Players start by selecting their characters and are then put in a small, plain arena where there are no objects to jump onto or block their way. Borrring! Also, the characters are often uneven, meaning that someone will always have the advantage. For instance: if your opponent picks a simple droid as his character and you choose one of the jedi as yours, you will more than likely win since your character has force powers and can also deflect laser shots, while your opponent's droid can only shoot from a distance. Unfair!

And to end it off, LucasArts never fixed the small glitches: you still get stuck between objects like trees and cliffs, the animation of characters is still choppy, and sometimes the screen scrolls to blackness and you can't see your character. There was even one time in the last level as I was fighting Darth Maul, when he fell into a pit, and the only way to proceed with the game was to jump down after him, sacrifice a life, and start the level over.

With all this said though, the main game is still a blast, especially when playing cooperatively with a friend. I find Jedi Power Battles' simple action a great diversion from the large, complex adventure games that seem everywhere nowadays. After all, who hasn't wanted to be in the shoes of a jedi and wield a lightsaber?

Jedi Power Battles had me foaming at the mouth when I learned that there would FINALLY be a SW platform game released. I have to say this game lived up to all of my lofty expectations, yeah the gameplay isn't the greatest, but the graphics, sound, and character selection more than compensate. All Star Wars fans need to own this game, it's really addicting. You can do some really sweet combos as you gain points and get to higher stages in the game. The coolest part is how you can deflect laser gun shots back at your enemies. All in all, definitely worth the money.

Jedi Power battles is a great game. It has great graphics, nice sound and good gameplay, the only lacking factor is its lasting appeal.

Graphics: 5 Stars

The graphics are great the camera angle can get a little awkward at first, but then you get the hang of it. The combos run smoothly. The movie clips are amazing. and the frame rate is really good. these are some of the best graphics on this type of game I have seen.

Sound: 5 Stars

The sound in this game is amazing. the humming of a light saber, the clatter of machines in the backround, and the sounds of you slicing a Battle driod in half. The music is straight from the movie which means it is good. Altogether some of the best sounds ever.

Gameplay: 4.9

The gameplay is not perfect but good. The controls can be a little tricky at first but you get the hang of it. all around a solid gameplay.

Lasting Appeal: 4

The lasting appeal leaves something to be desired. a seriouse gamer can win the game in about 3 days with only a half hour a day. but WINNING and BEATING the game are 2 seperate things. A completely dedicated 3 hours straight gamer can BEAT the game in about a month, give or take a couple days. then after that it is fun for about a week with all the stuff that is unlocked.

All in all Jedi Power Battles is a must have for any gamer out there.

this game was hard at first to master the controls but when you got the hang of it, it was an awsome game. If you dont buy this game then at least rent it or something. This game doesnt match to Shenmue or Shenmue2 but its a really good game. It's as if the game pulls you in with it and you are the jedi master. Get this game before its to late.

This game looks (not so thrilling) but its not at all, in fact it kicks.

This game has to be one of the best titles that is on dreamcast. I have beaten the game numerous times and its tons of fun. Each of the Jedi has awesome forse powers that will knock the crud out of your enemies. The graphics are also awesome. It covers up for the (messed) up PS one version with barely any game freezes or interuptions.It has a ton of new graphics and new secret levels and you can even play as your enemies :-). MUCH better boss battles are also what makes this game better and cooler. If you need a game for dreamcast, dude, get this.

The graphics are so sweet. i love them so much. But the game just is too challanging. Darth Maul is almost Mission Impossible. Hes unstoppable. I only reccomend this game for people who like challanges.

this game is the best game ever!! the graphics are outstanding.The plot is also easy to understand.the 2 player mode is awesome.I would reccomend this game to anyone and everyone!!! I have got to the 6th level. I still play all the other levels to.
