3.5 Stars. A surprisingly good game.

The Vietnam War seems to be the subject of quite a few games latley. Men of Valor and Battlefield: Vietnam are two entrys into the shooter genre. Now fledgling developer Guerrilla games from The Netherlands have given us the game Shellshock: Nam 67 as thier first official release prior to thier highly anticipated game Killzone later this year. And though not perfect, Shellshock is an entertaining game in it's own right.

In Shellshock: Nam '67 you play a green G.I., newly arrived in the Nam. The game centers around your character as you battle the North Vietnamese Army in a variety of locations (swamp, rice pattys, villages). You also have to make "moral descisions" in the game. Situations arise where you have to make descisions which may affect the outcome of the game.

The gameplay is fairly good. It tends to get a bit repetitive but there's enough variety here to keep you interested. The NVA are a challenging enemy at times. They will regroup and adjust position according to your actions. Though the enemy A.I. is spotty at times, the game is never too easy. There are also sub goals during missions. One of them is to defuse booby traps. Something I have yet to do sucessfully. The enemys are surprisingly tough. It takes quite a few bullets to put them down. There's an interactive Base Camp where you can talk to your fellow soldiers as well as upgrade some of your weapons. Some may be dissapointed with the lack of an online component but it really wouldn't give you anything different than countless other games already include.

The graphics while not great are very condusive to the game's environment. The graphics have a grainy texture to them. This is to replicate the feel of a 1960's Vietnam newsreal. One of the things that happens quite often is that the enemy will blend in well with the background making them hard to see. This is intentional I'm guessing. One of the things that struck me as unusual was the movements of the non-player characters. They looked at times like they were skating across the gamescape. Your character moves a little stiff at times but as the game progresses you get used to it. The sounds on this game are very good. Alot of period music is used to give the game more historical context. The NVA will curse you out as your fighting them. Your squadmates are very vocal as well and the weapon sounds are very good. This is good sounding game.

The controlls are a little stiff. It takes about 45 minutes to become accustomed to the control scheme. But once you start blasting it's hard to stop. Some things like switching weapons is still a little tricky but there's a quick switch that compensates for it.

I have to say that I didn't expect much from this game. But when you get a few levels deep, it does become rather addictive. Though I wouldn't pay $49.99 for it, I most likely would pay $19.99 for it. My best advice is to give it a rental first.

Fun At First

Let me address one of the reviewers who made some complaints. First, yes their are sexual themes, but thats the way it was there. And your right, the characters have no "valor", but once again, both sides did bad things in the war (although the V.C. did much worse things). Now with that out of the way, let me say, the first part of the game was great! The enemy did not die with one shot. No they were extremely hard to kill. It took several shots, especially with a machine gun, but not so many with a rifle, to kill them. The levels were pretty realistic. But the game took a step backwards with your promotion to special forces. You take on impossible missions, but they really aren't that impossible. There are also a lot of things to do back a the base. This is a fun game that is worth getting.

THE BEST VIETNAM WAR GAME!!!!!!!!!!! until now.

First of all DON'T COMPARE this game with Socom Navy Seals, Metal Gear Solid, Splintercell and Medal of Honor BECAUSE YOU WILL HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are my points:

* The controls are easy to get used to them but you have to give it a day.

* GREAT graphics (very realistic).

* This game is MUCH better than Vietnam Conflict (another game), Vietnam Conflict is more real and strategical but the game is slow, very complicated and the graphics are not good.

* ACTION PACKED FROM THE BEGINNING TO FOWARD, daylight and night-time missions, jungle and city missions and stealth missions.

* Honestly ,the game itself is VERY SIMILAR to Medal of Honor except for the "fisrt-person shooting", this time is "second-person shooting" like in Socom Navy Seals.

P.S: Watch this movies so you can fell INSPIRED!! while playing this game: Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and Apocalipse Now. Especially Apocalipse Now!!!!!!!!!!!

In my own lame opinion I think this is the best "VEITNAM" video game to hit the scene. Out of the other three Nam games Playstation has right now I would have to say this is the best of the best regardless what these other guys, or gals will tell you. I loved it from begining to end, and of course I had to play it on hard-core. lets face it. The only real reason to buy a war video game is so that we can blow the crap out of the enemy, and let me tell you this is the game to do so. I mean arms, legs, and heads are rolling in this baby. Lots of blood & gore just how I like it. So get out there and rent it! See for yourself, and stop asking for other peoples advise. It's a great war game, and one of the best. Lots of weapons and lots of fun. If you love the real horror of war this is the game for you. Oh and wait untill you get the poontang pass. Remeber the hooker in Full Metal Jacket.
Very cooool Game - Go Get it now!!!!

Shockingly Intense

OK, take a deep breath. It's only a video game. Alright, my heartbeat is back to normal.

What an intense game. The moment you start to panic from the chaotic gunfire is the moment in which you'll be restarting the mission due to your death and cowardice. I started on the normal difficulty level, but I had to resort to easy after five missions because they were tough. It's ok though; that just gives it great replay value. The controls are easy to learn and the environments are great, even though they're interactive. The enemy AI is relentless and great, except for occasional enemy saying "you go home in body bag" after I've shot their head off. I'm not quite sure if the team I'm fighting with can die or not. I've accidentally shot them point blank in the head and all they say is "watch where you're shooting". This could be a good or a bad thing. There's been a few times when I was too chicken and hiding behind a rock because of the heavy ammo flying around while boys were playing Rambo and getting waxed...but still not quite dying.

The only thing I don't like about the game is the inability to save anywhere. This game desperately needs it. It took me over an hour to complete a mission. It was late. I just wanted to finish the dog gone level, save it, brush my teeth, and go to bed. For that reason, I would give it 4 1/2 stars.

Are you thinking about buying that used copy of No One Lives Forever you saw at the video game store? Think again. Just read any of my reviews and you will understand just how sorry that game is.

"A Hit! Best Of The "Nam Games"

So, I just finished watching "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson, turned on the PS2 and popped in my copy of Shell Shock Nam '67.
What a great transition! It's just like being in the movie. Don't pay any attention to the few negative reviews. I've played all the 'Nam games for PS2 and many FSP's and this is a winner! Bloody, yes, but so is war. I get so tired of people using this forum to so quickly complain about every little detail of a game. IT'S A GAME. If you like war games and shooters, lock and load, and Enjoy!
Five Stars!!!!

Spend your money elsewhere!

I waited almost 4 months for this game and come to find out the missions suck and the so called "true war" experiance was about the most "untrue war" experiance I have had from any game. The only mission that was any good was the forth where you have to rescue the POW's. They also say that "Each mission should range from 45 to 65min in length". 10 mins on each mission is more like it! and on the subject of missions 11 only i thought it was going to be 14? terrible game, if you want to get it try renting it first you will save a few bucks!

A Disappointment

This game lacked many realistic details, for example: *The Vietcong were not very smart (in my opinion the AI was terrible).
*Whoever designed it had a serious obsession with blood and dismembered limbs.
*You never really feel like you've got a mission other than to kill your way through seemingly endless enemies.
*The characters have no honor or valor, making you feel like
there is no good side to fight for.
*The weapons were not done as well as to be expected.
*Your health is unreal!! I was hit about 40 times and was only at 50% health.
*Among other things, I found it quite disturbing to put sexual themes in a game like this.
*It felt like you were stuck on an already determined path through the jungle, you lack the ability to go off course.

After all of that being said, I guess it would only be fair to put in the things which give it it's 2 out 5:
*The graphics were well done.
*I found it enjoyable to pick up a different gun when I found one.
*The handling of the controls was well done.

Conclusion?
A waste of money, you'd be better off getting Socom Navy Seals (which was very well done) or Ghost Recon.

If you are looking for something that realistically portrays being in Vietnam, then get Conflict: Vietnam.

If you are looking for an arcade game, then get Shellshock.
Mind you. Shellshock doesn't even re-create the Vietnam like Jungle. It looks like you are going through the woods in your local area.

Horrible game.

Like many of you I couldn't wait for this game to come out. After I started playing I got very frustrated. This game seemed as if though it was terribly rushed. I have never understood why game designers would rush a project and produce a product like this and lose creditabilty for future products instead of just continuing to delay the game until they completely finish it. Like Delta force blackhawk down, at least i hope the designers will finish Delta force blackhawk down completely or scrape it!

Anyway back to this game. The graphics and environments are really exceptional. The only problem is it makes absolutely no sense for the designers to make such lush environments and not make them fully interactive. In other words you can not always hide behind a tree as the design engine does not always allow you to. A lot of times you are confined to a narrow pathway. The designers should have taken a page from US SOCOM: Navy Seals' designers on this aspect. Despite the narrow pathways, you still get turned around and lost on some mission. That is inexcusable since you have to put up with the narrow pathways in the first place. The terrian is another problem, you can walk over some things while others you can't. However, the passable and impassable terrian looks the same. All the while you are being ambushed and shot at with no idea of how to reach the enemy. The load times are long and unneeded even to check mission objectives takes a minute to load. Totlaly ridiculous! I wouls say do not buy this game. I would wait to see if there is a part 2, perhaps nam 68' LOL!, and see if the designers fix these glaring flaws. And if anyone knows where the d*mn reporter is on mission two could they please tell me!
