Fatal Frame 2 the crimson butterfly is by far, the best survival game I've laid eyes on!
The graphics are kickass, the horror is horrifying! Though is no music most of the time it's still awsome, the plot is very original. I normally stay away from games like Silent Hill, especially after playing the 3rd one. But I just happen to glance at an advertisement in my magazine for this game and I was soooo intriguued I just had to play it!
Plot: it's basically about twins- Mio & Mayu- who vist a place where they spent their childhood, and Mayu {the elder twin and the stupider one} sees a crimson butterfly and follows it, Mio {younger twin and smarter one} chases after her sister. They then stumble upon a village,
but not just any ordinary village, it's filled with hostile ghosts and angry spirits. It's called " the lost village ", it's people preform rituals in order to sustain peace in there village.
The most common is the crimson ritual, where twins are sacrificed to the gate of hell. In order to please the gods, anyway along time ago, the villagers tried sacrificed Yae & Sae -twin- it didn't go as planned.
At the last minute a boy named Itsuki a remaining male twin from a previous ritual, - his twin bro Mutsuki- was sacrificed leaving him. Helped Yae the younger twin & Sae the elder twin escape,
He led them to the edge of the forest and left them to make it te rest of the way on their own. Yae was running ahead of Sae, and she couldn't keep up, Sae fell off of a ledge and the villagers got to her.
Sae was confident her twin would come for her, sadly enough Yae didn't. Sae was sacrificed alone,
it didn't work, she returned and brutally murdered everyone in the village. Leaving the village repeating itself over n over...and traping anyone who enters,
Mio & Mayu must escape the ghosts, survive the ritual and escape the horrid village!
I'd definately recommend this to any horror fan, I'd even think you end up buyin it,

It was the very first time a video game got me scared enough to scream! It is now a favorite of mine and my friends and we are close to beatin it! I definetly reccomend this game!

I have to disagree with all the emotional kids out there saying the game is the scariest ever. That is not the truth. This game is scary at the begining but once you see the first ghost you have seen them all. Also they do not have the ability to make you jump from your sit.
The atmosphere is the greatest thing in the game and it is the one thing that makes you feel in suspense.
Graphics are very good (except for the ghosts actully), specialy considering they are on the ps2 but I have yet to see something that is at least 70% of the graphics for Resident Evil on the gamecube.
Sound is also good but nowhere close to Silent Hill games.
I contrasted this with other games so you could have a way to meassure it against.
The concept is good and very different from that of most games.
Story is the best thing in my oppinion, I have to give them 5 stars for that here.
Fun factor is great too but not the most fun so that is why I gave it the 4 stars. Still it is, after the RE and Silen Hill series the best.
Just when I was getting cocky...

This game is cunning. I was praising myself too early at being able to handle the tension, but a couple of ghosts later I was in a strange trance, a place of limbo where I could not stop playing but didn't like continuing either. A door would shut behind me and I would about go into a siezure. A hour and a half later I was upstairs watching the Antique Road Show with my parents.
The drama and style have a strong transporting ability. The cut scenes are very fluid, amazing really. Red crimson is a character all on it's own. The extreme contrasts of the fawn like qaulity of the sisters against the ongoing questionable shapes in the environment keeps the tension mounted. Sounds come and go irradically---get ready to turn up the sound to hear the kitten like voices of the girls--making way for more ominious noises to crash into your consciousness. It took a lot for me to get used to the fact that it's so bloody dark - it's hard to tell a door from a wall or which way is a path and which isn't. I am guessing that that is part of what makes the game so intense, to be always trying to figure out what things are, but I found it a bit frustrating.
This is probably the darkest game I have played, not only because of the startling images, but because the story feels so personal.
Go home and stay home Fatal Frame. BORING!!!

Fatal Frame 2 does nothing to innovate the genre at all. It's an exact wannabe clone of Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Explore a maze of rooms with some helpless and awkward to control characters all while solving some puzzles and reading some notes. Been there done that. The problem with Fatal Frame is that it's horror concept just isn't as cool as Resident Evil or Silent Hill, those two games each have their unique style, and little japanese girls taking pictures of spirits, ancient japanese rituals, and boring villages simply aren't as interesting. Sure Fatal Frame 2 is a pretty scary game, but making a scary game isn't hard, making a good game is.
Not only is Fatal Frame 2 a clone of better games, it's also a nearly exact clone of the original Fatal Frame, and since Fatal Frame seems to only exist to try to claim the title of scariest game, it might be worth mentioning that this one isn't as scary as the original. Everything is the same, and anything different isn't even worth mentioning because the game is still BORING.
To be fair Fatal Frame is much easier game than the original, which I think is good thing and the graphics are technically impressive with lighting and shadows that aren't seen other than in Resident Evil games for Nintendo GameCube. The controls and everything are just a bit smoother and more polished than the original. Technically a well made game, but the CONCEPT is just not there. Make a horror game about something cool, no one wants a horror that takes place in Japan or old Japan. People don't watch those old japanese movies where the lips don't match the words do they? Use your head Tecmo. This should be the last Fatal Frame installment, please go home Fatal Frame. BORING!!
Beautiful, creepy...yet fun game to play.

Here's the deal: from the transition from Fatal Frame to Fatal Frame 2 I expected to be stopping every 30 minutes to regain my composure, expecially with the Mature label sticking out. The fact is, this game is about half the time and half the creep-out factor of the first. These are both pros and cons. First, the game is not as scary as the first, like things do not randomly pop out every 20 seconds as they do in the first. The good in this is you do not dread the game, which indeed makes it more fun, and you can continue with the good story line. Also, when things actually do come out of no where, it is twice as scary. The bad is, of course, you do not have as much "fun" getting scared. With the factor of time, they made it easier to actually accomplish things in the second. In the first, I would find myself wandering around half the time with no clue on where to go. In this one, they make the clues a lot more direct. Also, the camera is A LOT easier to use and upgrade, and there are not as many bosses.
Other pros are the graphics. In the first the colors where almost black and white, and in this one there are dark colors that add to the real feel. The soundtrack is about the same, maybe a bit better. The characters seem more developed and there seems to be more of a purpose to all of the things that went on, for in the first they seemed a bit random. The different diaries and scraps you get to read are very interesting, and the English voice-overs are the best of any game I have ever heard.
So...
Pros: Graphics, Story Line, Camera, Sister(lol)
Cons: Short, Not as scary, ANNOYING Camera Angles
Final: why should you buy this? Because it is the best genuine horror game out there save Fatal Frame 1, and the story and characters make you think...without keeping you awake at night.
Simply an Enjoyable Game

Fun and interestingly creepy. You start out in a village haunted with ghosts. You must find a ghost destroying camera that has many upgrades and film types of varying strengths. You and your twin sister are involved in the plot. She is involved in a killing ritual, but how? Can you save her and you? The ghosts are cool and creepy and it's fun to take them down. I hope you enjoy this game too. Don't let it scare you!
way better than original

Good overall game.
Bad, bad horror game.
It just is not scary. The music shifts gradually, so a random ghost never surprises you. The chase scenes are remedial at best.
This doesn't stop it being a fun game, but truly the only way its superior to PZ1 is the graphics and the ending song!
best game ever
