I would love to give a review of this game's fun dynamics between playing a spiteful or benevolent god, but I can't. The reason for this is because the game continually has problems running. When I first received the game for the holidays I was ecstatic as I had explicitly asked for it! I went to install it that night on my Mac OS X.3.7 Titanium Powerbook. Well, before the game was even finished installing I received an error when I tried to insert the second (or "data") installer disc. So, feeling very disappointed I emailed Feral Interactive (the company that translated Black & White over to Mac) and reported by problem. I heard back fairly quickly that this was a known issue and I would be sent a new copy of my game.
I sat back and waited four weeks for it to arrive from England, and when it did I rushed to install it, of course! So the installer program ran flawlessly, but the update patch (1.1.9) wouldn't function. It tried to search my hard drive, but the little colorwheel spun on into eternity and my installer bar never moved an inch. Well, being a daring girl I tried to run my freshly installed game without the update patch, and to no surprise there were problems. Perhaps these are the problems addressed in the patch, but I suppose I'll never know as the patch won't install itself.
My incredibly low rating has something to do with the crushed anticipation I felt each time the game failed to run. I am sure that had I been able to actually play my score would be much higher. Obviously not all Mac users are experiencing this problem, but here's my word of warning before you buy.

This is basically Black & White and Creature Isle in one, with some exeptions. There are four new creatures that you can use in the original, but they are available in Creature Isle. Here they are:
Mandrill:Average stats, and a little up on reaction (but not nearly as much as the Leopard)
Horse: A little up on intelligence, and really good running speed. Stronger than the Cow, but not much.
Leopard: Really fast, best reaction time of all, but not very smart. Weaker than the Tiger.
Gorilla: Fat, strong, slow, and average intelligence.

This could be a very cool game -- being a baby god, working your way up the hierachy by ignoring or embracing your conscious, helping people out, and getting a potentially powerful avatar. However it works best with a two-click mouse yet refuses to work with my new microsoft one. Relying on the traditional iMac mouse makes playing the game difficult and frankly I want to play computer for the fun not for added stress. Feral should really check into these problems.
Might be fun but won't Install

It seems that Feral has put some mismatched CDs on the market such that the game won't install. I ordered this game from Amazon for an XMas present for my daughter. During the installation process, you have to change disks, but the second CD isn't recognized and is ejected. Searching help sites, this is evidently a known issue and you have to get replacement disks from Feral. If I asked Amazon to exchange the disks (which I'm sure they'd do), I don't know that I wouldn't get another set of bad disks.
THIS IS A DVD NOT A CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that this is a DVD not a CD meant I couldn't play it on my old iMac even tho' all other system requirements were met! Advertising it as a CD-ROM is misleading!

I had the same problem installing B&W to my powerrbook...upon the request to insert the "Data disc", the darn thing just spit right back out of the drive. Very frustrating and the support websites listed in the manual don't help out either.

This game is beautiful to play, but i did not expect such a level of Micro-management. Your people copmplain constantly and it really becomes a pain. I though i would spend my time taking over other villages and casting fireballs, but really i'm totally occupied giving food and bulding huts. Its a game that some love and others hate.

Bad or good, you make the choice. The game is awesome after you get past the learning part. Haven't played it for Mac yet. If you want a break from WW2, gun wielding, bomb dropping, gun fights. Then get this game. Then if you like it, get B&W2 for Mac when they release. I'm Brandon, and I'm telling you to try this game!

I BOUGHT THE GAME OPENED IT UP AND INSTALLED IT ON MY MACBOOK. I HAVE ALL OF THE RECOMENDED REQUIRMENTS MET AT WORST AND DOUBLED AT BEST. BUT SINCE THE GAME HAS GLITCHES AND THEIR IS NO PATCH AVALABLE IT WONT LET ME PLAY THE GAME. AND SINCE THE PACKAGE WAS ALREADY OPENED I CANNOT RETURN IT. WHEN I CALLED FOR SUPPORT I WAS TOLD ABOUT THE PROBLEM THEY COULD NOT FIX. AND THE KICKER IS I SEARCHED AND SEARCHED AND NO OTHER GAME CREATES AN ENTIRELY UNIQUE CONCEPT OF PLAYING GOD MAKING CREATURES AND DETERMINING ULTIMATE THE FATE OF A WORLD. I JUST WANT TO PLAY.
Conceptually Cool, Falls Flat Upon Further Play

Black and White seems like it would be a great time. Choose your own creature from a wide variety of options, and then raise it to reflect either a just and good side or an evil one. The way that these mechanics function however, is anything but great. The creatures operate within extremely limited A.I. making interacting with them about as interesting as a Furby. Additionally, the entire game is centered around how you interact with your villagers. Being evil, this is fun for about 15 minutes, as you can throw them around and drop things on them, etc. Being good however, is an amazing hassle, as you find yourself CONSTANTLY responding to your villager's every problem. Importantly, there is NEVER a time when they are content: they always require something from you. This makes the game monotonous, tedious, and most importantly, boring. Because of all these dynamics, the expansion is not worth it either, as it only builds on this already hopeless playing style.
The worst thing about Black and White, bar none, is the way in which you control your camera view. This is the most awkward control scheme I have ever seen in a game, and makes me wonder how anyone could ever learn to use it effectively. If you have a one button mouse, forget it, you will spend your entire time being frustrated. If you have a two button mouse, it won't be much better.
Lastly, let me just clarify that this game is not fun. It is not enjoyable. And any likable quality falls short after about 15 minutes. Instead, save yourself some frustration and buy a similar old-school game that isn't terrible. I would recommend either Giants: Citizen Kabuto or Aliens vs. Predator. Both great games. This one unfortunately, is not.
