Metroid Prime (2002.) The fifth game in the Metroid series.
See you next mission. These were the words that gamers saw after they had completed Super Metroid, a 1994 release for the Super Nintendo. What Nintendo didn't tell gamers is that the "next mission" they were talking about would take eight years to be released. Metroid Prime for the Nintendo Gamecube was fast becoming one of the most hyped video games ever. The game arrived in November of 2002, along with a new Game Boy Advance Metroid title, Metroid Fusion. How does Metroid Prime measure up? Read on and find out.
PROS:
-GRAPHICALLY, THIS GAME IS A MASTERPIECE. I've seen good graphics on the Gamecube before, but this game puts the graphics of pretty much every other game on the system to shame.
-DESPITE ITS NATURE AS A FIRST-PERSON GAME, IT MAINTAINS MOST OF THE ELEMENTS OF A CLASSIC METROID GAME. You've got all the trusty gadgets you've had to help you in the older games, plus plenty of new ones, as well. There are even different visors that you can use for different things.
-CHALLENGING. If you're a gamer seeking a challenge and you own a Gamecube, you're gonna be in heaven when you play this game. This game will even challenge those who are good at video games!
-COMPATIBLE WITH METROID FUSION. If you beat Metroid Fusion and link to Metroid Prime, you can play the original NES Metroid on the Gamecube. If you beat Prime and link the two games, you can play through Prime with a different outfit!
CONS:
-YOUR CHARACTER MOVES TOO SLOW! This makes progressing through the game at times seem boring (fortunately, the Morphing Ball moves at a very good speed, so that serves as a solution to this problem.)
-NO SMART WAY TO BATTLE MORE THAN ONE ENEMY AT ONCE. If you're cornered by multiple enemies, it's safe to say you're screwed. And once you've completed all of the objectives in an era, extremely agile flying enemies will fill the area. Obviously, Nintendo didn't really think this aspect of the game through.
-NOT FOR BEGINNERS. If you're anything short of a video gaming master, there's a good chance that you'll find this game to be too challenging.
-YOU MUST SAVE USING SAVE POINTS. You can't just save the game whenever you want, and this becomes one of the game's biggest flaws. The fact that the save points are few and far between doesn't help things either.
-YOUR CHARACTER'S VIEW IS FIXED AT A SINGLE VERTICAL ANGLE. In other words, you can't shift your view up or down, and because of this, there's a chance you might not see enemies sneaking up on you from a different angle.
-THE PRIME/FUSION COMPATIBILITY REQUIRES A GBA/GCN CABLE. This sucks, because this cable isn't good for a whole lot else. And who wants to buy one for the sake of one game?
OVERALL:
Overall, Metroid Prime is an excellent Gamecube Game. Sure, I've complained a lot, but that's just the way I am. This is one of the system's finest games. If you've got a Gamecube, I strongly recommend at least trying the game out.
