Ok, I've never been much into flight simulator games and I'm only halfway done with AC6 but I just had write this review because of how terrible the story mode is for this game.

The planes are fun and look good, the missions are fine and I have no problems with the overall game play... But the story and voice acting in the cut scenes are so bad that I can't stand it.

It's like the script was written by an adolescent monkey on a braille typewriter. The dialog is horrible from the first word that's spoken and is delivered by characters who have nothing to do with the actual game.

It would be nice if the story actually followed the character that I'm supposed to be playing, but instead it follows some lady looking for her kid, some Russian guy with a limp and basically anyone else who doesn't fly a fighter plane and isn't the main character.

Ahhh! It's just bad and every time someone talks in this game I just want to eject from my cockpit and let the bad guys win.

It's ok I guess...

The game starts off well. It's immersive and entertaining. The graphics are stunning and the music adds a nice touch. However, this game all of a sudden falls flat on it's face. I did not play the other games. I'm new to the series, but not to flight sims, arcade or not. The game made for a fun experience but then it just becomes almost impossible. The alerts for incoming missiles becomes so annoying that I thought about throwing my controller for the first time in 20 years. The wingmen and the rest of your squadron are completely useless. The wingman also doesn't shut up the entire time. It's such a disappointment because you go from an absolute winner, to some of the worst gameplay in recent memory. A game is supposed to be challenging, not ridiculously repetitive and aggravating. Also, don't even bother paying attention to the story. It has all the cliches of a bad writing and voice acting. Just skip it all together and play the missions.

Fans of the game will probably love this game, but if you're new to it, be warned. It's pretty and fun for a while, then falls apart.

Not the best in the series

The differences between this one and AC-4, AC-5, AC-0 I think are that the graphics in terms of terrain, missile trails, and planes are superior, but the missions are much, much longer and divided into multiple parts. This is not all good or bad, but different. At times it's nice to be able to start from the last "checkpoint", rather than go through a long, tedious mission until you get to the next phase, etc. You can get a little worn out or lose your peak interest during the mission. I don't have HD-TV, I'm not sure if that matters, but I found it hard to visualize the target box and its ID on foilage-covered terrain. I couldn't even tell sometimes which target I was locked onto (unless a dust or smoke cloud obscured the ground, then, strangely, the target box stood out clearly.) Unlike most other reviewers, I sort of liked the story and the story board. I bought an XBox360 just for this game and although playing the game was OK, in retrospect it was not worth my additional expense. But, if you're a fan of the series, what are you going to do? I do hope Namco makes some changes in the next game. Anyone know how to pass suggestions on to them? There are many things I think they did not do well in terms of programming the characteristics of flight, etc., too many to list here. Overall, the game is "OK" and if you're a fan of the series, you should get it. Perhaps playing on an HD-TV makes it more worthwhile.

Not ACE COMBAT 4

Ace Combat 4 in my opinion was the best game of all the Ace Combat series. It had a (mostly) great story, terrific graphics, amazing music and the gameplay flowed together to give the player a movie-like experience. Awesome.

Not so much for Ace Combat 6. The graphics overall are spectacular, naturally, and flying around on a big screen TV in high def is seriously fun stuff. Unfortunately that's about all it has going for it. With a near-incomprehensible storyline with uninteresting characters, gameplay that is at times too easy and then almost impossible, and wingmen that are just plain useless, it's a chore to push through the entire game.

The Good:

* Visuals. Awesome!

The Bad

* Terrible story - like, really bad. Awful bad. Two or three cinematics in and I was completely lost, and didn't really care to back up and figure it out. The dialogue is over-the-top cheesy and tries way too hard to sound patriotic or remorseful.
* Missions - Too long and too expansive. Fighter pilots in reality work in teams, but not here. Where in reality a wingman would get enemies off your back, and other squadrons would accomplish mission tasks, the pilots in the air here (especially your over-chatty wingman) are just plain useless. I know the developers wanted to make a "massive, multi-layered combat environment", but such environments usually have more than one aircraft feverishly running and gunning.
* Unkillable A.I. - The "Strigon" squadron is as easy to kill as shooting at gnats with arrows. But the good news, don't even try and they'll be miraculously defeated anyway...
* Danger alerts - Oh my good lord, these are so annoying!!! Yes, I know there's yet another missile chasing me that I'm just going to out-run anyway, quit the beeping! Quit the announcements! If my wingman isn't going to help out back there, just shut up.
* Music - doesn't matter to some, but it's a personal pet peeve of mine when the music sucks. Ace Combat 4 for some reason had an amazing score put to it, but not this one.

Even with the bad though, just playing a high-def, arcade-style flight sim with unlimited missiles on a big TV is worth the included garbage.

A good Game

If you like the other Ace combat games you'l enjoy this one. Its a cool game overall, but lacks the large selection of Fighters and cool Camo's we had to unlock. You get a wingman to help but he doesnt do to much. Plus the story and radio chatter gets annoying when they refer to the Dog Fights as "Dancing with the Angles". Its a great thing that you can mute it.
Graphics look great but the replay value stinks. I found myself not really wanting to play it again once I finished it on Hard then unlocked Expert(You get Ace after that). Namco will be allowing you to download thing off xbox live, and they have a few skins right now but not much. The online play is cool at times but you get into a room and everyone is useing the F-22. I expected that much once I saw which planes were available. They have a co-op but it not like that of Halo 3 which would have been sweet. I miss the Su-35/37 and the F-4.
True fans will not be let down by the game, but I'd tell anyone else to rent it first.

Good, but not great

This game does a lot of things right, but also plenty of things wrong. Because of this, the game is slightly above average (although it's far superior to any of the flight games on the Xbox 360). The graphics and lighting effects are great (although I wouldn't call them "photo-realistic"). There are plenty of planes to choose from, and lots of things to unlock as you progress. The game is also extremely addictive. Once you die, you'll immediately want to try again. The missions themselves are pretty decent, albeit somewhat repititious. So what's wrong with the game? First and foremost, the cutscenes and/or story is absolutely god awful. If you want to keep your sanity, just skip the story sequences altogether. Another problem I had is that there's no real sense of speed. You can fly 1000 mph at 500ft and it looks like you're in slow motion. This is hinders the game since you have to be up close and personal to actually kill anything. Overall, it's a fun way to kill some time and anyone who loves military jets will want to try it. However, if you want something revolutionary, keep waiting.

Realism to Unrealistic

Overall the game is fun but the storyline in the campaign mode is a bit corny. For a good bit of the game it is mildly realistic but in the final battle it is totally ridiculous. Flying an F15 at 1500 knots and the enemy planes fly circles around you. You watch the radar screen as they pull away from you at three times your speed. That means they're flying at 4500 knots? The game does not autosave your progress when you reach checkpoints throughout the game so if you choose to end your session and do something else like go to bed, when you start again you'll have to fly the entire mission again . . . and again. That gets rather boring and tedious. To really enjoy this game you have to have absolutely nothing better to do but sit and play it for hours on end. I would rate it a 4 out of 10.

Not that Great

I've been playing games for a while now, and my only experience with ace combat was the original ace combat for the Playstation. That game is better than this one. While the planes, environments, and scenery are all lushly detailed and such, and the simulation of flying is quite fun, the rest of the game is just bad. Cutscenes involve characters that have nothing to do with your character, and the dialogue could not be less interesting if they had just left it in Japanese. Your wingman is an idiot, who refuses to provide any cover. Your allies are idiots that will most certainly die without your guidance. Certain enemies are nuclear physicists who can fly rings around you and destroy you in a heartbeat. Missiles lock on to you and your ever helpful wingman yells that they've got a lock on you in your ear, if the red screen and annoying buzzing noise wasn't enough. But the main problem in this game is that it simply fails to capture your interest. The story isn't engaging and neither is the gameplay, leaving very little to do once you beat the game. It's a mediocre sequel that really could have done with some A.I. and cutscenes that that actually made you care. This game is worth a rental, if you're into aerial dogfights, but it's simply not worth buying. Maybe they can clean up 7 from the uninteresting mess that is Fires of Liberation.

Some Old Some New

So, the ACE series finally comes to the next generation. It has been a long wait, that in my opinion was worth it.

My favorite part of the whole game so far ( I am still playing it) is the abality to call for either Allied Attacks or Allied Cover. As in the past it would always be up to you to take out everthing either land, sea, or air. Now you actually get help. And they actually take out stuff or cover you if you are getting fired at.

The planes are the same as all of the other Ace Combat games, graphically they are sharper but nothing new. I will say that your planes are now more equiped with a huge payload of special weapons and regular missles, not the case in the old games. If you run out of ammo you can go back to the base and restock up, which was not the case in AC5. I am glad they brought that one back.

Missions are alot better than before, here you actually get to fight for longer than five minutes, I would say on average the missions last anywhere from 20-30 minutes, I am only on mission 10 so I dont know how many missions the game has.

Graphics are much imporved from the old series. When your plane gets hit by a bullet for example a little amber will be burning where you got hit for a moment, then it smolders out. Explosions are awesome, and the terrain looks pretty real.

As a fan of the series I am very happy, and I can see for me, this game will have a good replay value to it.

Story line, what can I say it's Ace Combat they have never been known for a great storyline, they could have done alot more with this, I thought they would seeing how it's next gen and all.

Amazing Visuals, as usual

In typical Ace Combat fashion, this title continues to push the envelop of visual realism in flight simulators.

If you have enjoyed previous Ace Combat games you will not be disappointed by Fires of Liberation. If you haven't ever played an Ace Combat this one is certainly a great place to enter the series.

While gameplay is solid as usual and missions vary in style and objective, one can't help but focus on the absolutely stunning visuals.

Ace Combat has always been known for great realism in its aircraft, but in this iteration the developer really put the focus on making the landscapes come to life. I have yet to play a console flight sim that provides such an immersive experience as Ace Combat.

On the other hand, (also typical of the series) the story is a cheesy mess of melodramatic fluff. You'd be better off skipping each cutscene and focusing on the gameplay.

My only real complaint is that level difficulty is inconsistent. One mission will be moderately easy followed immediately by one that is near impossible. Then you're back to easy again. I believe this is due to the fact that Wingman support is utterly useless, which makes any level with a lot of enemy planes that much more challenging.

In one particularly frustrating mission your comrades continually chime in over the radio to let you know that one or more of a dozen enemy fighters has a missile lock on you but they neither attempt to take out your pursuers (cover command) nor attack the target objective (attack my target command) whilst you shake the bogies off your six. There may be "friendly" planes occupying the sky with you but for all intents and purposes they are just spectators. As a side note, the lack of worth of your wingman is evidenced by an achievement you can earn for his taking out a mere ten enemy targets by your command, meanwhile you might eliminate 40-50 targets in a single level.

In the end, Ace Combat 6 is good for 8 or 10 hours of single player fun, not to mention multiplayer action.
