Better than Halo 3

I got this game and wasnt sure if i would like it because i am a pretty big halo fan and i didnt think anything could be better. Gears of War definitly was. The boss battles are insane and the gameplay is absolutly stunning along with the graphics which look great. The online play isnt as great as halo but if youre in the mood for a "find cover and shoot" game like Gears of War is than youll definitly love the online play. The story is awesome because it drags you right in and wont let go. A must have for the xbox 360 owner.

Gears of war is an amazing game but it can destroy your xbox 360

I bought this game after reading the variety of outstanding reviews, and was not disappointed at all. Even though my expectations were high, this game still blew me away.

Epic games has really pushed the capabilities of the XBox 360 with this game. It is a real achievement in terms of technical prowess, cinematic game art and intuitive controls. The system they use to move in and out of cover is usually very smooth and gives the game a uniquely gritty combat feel. It's almost as fun to watch as play!

The collector's edition comes in a nifty tin, has a little hardback book with some interesting background information for the story and a bonus CD with a "making of" documentary and additional features. It's pretty cool, and I consider it worth the additional price.

Note that this game is not at all "kid friendly." It's roughly equivalent to a gory R-rated action/horror movie with ultraviolence and strong language. Entrails and pieces of cerebral cortex are flying everywhere, blood splashes on the screen and the "F" word makes several appearances.

I didn't expect a lot from the multiplayer aspect of the game. In some ways it seems a bit underdeveloped and thrown in almost as an afterthought. Regardless, I was surprised to find that it's really a lot of fun and works very well. The ability to revive your wounded comrades and curb-stomp your humiliated opponents is wicked fun. I hope a future patch makes the match-up system a bit better, though, because it kind of stinks now.

A lot has been made of the single player campaign being a bit on the short side and the story being weak. This is basically true, but in it's defense...

There are three difficulty settings and hidden "COG tags" that give the game a lot of replay value. Completing the game on "Insane" difficulty and finding all of the tags is *not* going to be something you can finish in four hours unless you are some kind of gaming god. Also, the multiplayer component gives it limitless variety if you tire of replaying the single player campaign on tougher settings.

As far as the story being perceived as weak, I believe this is primarily due to the ending not being much of a resolution. During the gameplay, the story is compelling and kept me hooked from one encounter to the next. But when it was over, I was thinking "HUH? That's it?" It wasn't anywhere near a complete story arc. None of the interesting questions are resolved (what are the Locust and what motivates them, what is Fenix's background, what's the deal with Imulsion and the relation to the Locust, etc.). All the game has done is set up the characters and situations and introduce the drama of a new sci-fi universe. It's kind of like going to see "Fellowship of the Ring" without realizing it's not a complete movie in itself. It's just the first part of an epic story. More will certainly be coming...

In short: great game for a mature sci-fi/horror loving audience. The XBox 360 killer app!

Simply breathtaking.

I bought this game the first day it was released, and let me tell you: it is quite jawdropping. I cannot describe this game all at once so I'll do it in parts.

GRAPHICS:
The second I started playing I was completely blown away by the game's visuals. Throughout the entire game, you will witness the power harnessed by your 360 as you watch water flow fluidly down surfaces, blood splatter and dribble on your screen while you chainsaw a Locust in half, or whether you are trying to quickly move in between sources of light in order to not be devoured by the vicious kryll swiftly gliding in the sky. The game is absolutely a visual masterpiece, and is EASILY THE BEST LOOKING GAME OUT RIGHT NOW. The game runs very smoothly while delivering an amazing cinematic experience that can only be found on the 360. While occasionally the framerate gets choppy during cinematics, during gameplay it is incredibly smooth and never once have I gotten any lag whatsoever while in a gigantic firefight. Detail is abound in the world, when you deliver your chainsaw into a couch, you can see the wooden framework underneath the fabric being sawed into splinters. Sawing someone in half whether it be online or offline never becomes a dull moment.

SOUND:
The sound in this game is incredible as well. Every gun sounds different, there must have been over 1000 sound files in this game because bullets sound completely different on different surfaces, footsteps sound different as well, and my favorite: the ambience, is quite amazing as well. Voice acting is top notch too, even if the main character's voice sounds a little bit cheesy.

GAMEPLAY:
This game is definitely not your typical shooter--it is a third person shooter with an emphasis on cover. I bet I am not the first person to have ran out in the middle of a firefight, guns-a-blazing, and got completely obliterated by my enemies. The action in this game has a very visceral feel to it, and the cover system is easier to learn than any other game. When you are near a low wall or some type of window, press A to get your character to quickly get on it, then pull back on the left thumbstick to get off of the object. The gameplay in Gears of War is the best part of it: I have played through and beaten Gears of War on Insane by myself, and I am still not bored of the game. After playing Gears of War and then trying other cover-based games such as Rainbow Six: Vegas, I simply cannot understand why something so simple (cover) is so hard to use correctly! The boss fights in the game are really easy, but some parts will just have you screaming "I LOVE THIS GAME!" Those of you thinking the game is too short are the ones playing it through on Casual. Here is a summary of the purpose of the difficulties:
CASUAL: First timers, get used to the mechanics of the game and the action. Pathetically boring if you play Casual on Co-op.
HARDCORE: This is where it actually becomes extremely fun, even with a friend. It's actually challenging and you will get completely torn apart if you dont use cover. Best mode in my opinion.
INSANE: This is not uber-lame like Halo 2's legendary, but rather like a tougher version of Hardcore, but not to the point where it becomes ridiculously difficult that its not fun.

ONLINE:
This is where the game truly shines. Think a modified version of Counter-Strike, but rather that you can come back to life if your allies revive you before your opponents curb stomp you. Although people whine about how you cant roll into a game with a pre-made party, it makes it more fair for newbies and pros alike, and really tests your skill. You never know who you are going up against.

Overall Gears of War was an amazing game, and the only thing I wish this game had was offline bots. Other than that, it is truly the best game on the Xbox 360, and it is the best $70 I have spent on a Collector's Edition of a game in a long while. The extra stuff in the Collector's Edition helps explain why the Locust are here, and what Imulsion is (this is in the art book by the way). I am pretty grateful for the CE stuff, otherwise this would have been a worse review/rating. Do yourself a favor and buy this game, you wont be disappointed.

This is one sweet game

I played this game over and over in the co-op mode with my brother and it didn't get boring at all! The engine it runs on is Unreal Engine 3 and it is smoother than ever. The over the shoulder camera angle makes you feel at times that you're watching a war movie or a swat team/police action movie. This is definately intended for mature audiences, so be sure to remember that before buying it for anyone under 17, or if younger, they know the difference between reality and fantasy. Enjoy the game!

Very Disappointing, Yet Very good game

This is by far the best game since God Of War or Halo. Now on to the bad. The games story was poorly done, It did not have the 5 W's. Who, What, When, Were and Why. This could have been the best game of the year or even better, but due to the length and story of the game it is very much a let down. I would highly recommend it and then i would also highly recommend you stay away from it. The creator's of this game should go back to the story board and take some time out to develope a great story, they depended on the eye candy of this game to sell, and it worked. All in all this game is nothing more than a big tease and nobody like a tease.

Gameplay Excellent, Lots of Bonuses

When I first put this into my 360's DVD drive, I was unsure about his game's quality because I had seen some kind of lame gameplay videos. Let me tell you, I was wrong. This game delivers on all fronts; single-player, full cooperative, Xbox Live, it's all there. The single-player campaign is a very enjoyable experience. There's nothing better than throwing a grenade behind the enemy's cover and watching the body parts rain down or using the chainsaw bayonet on a guy that just mowed down your squad. All this stuff NEVER gets old. Needless to say, this is not the game for your 10-year-old daughter (M-rated), although it DOES have an explicit content filter. If you are looking for a game to entertain you and your buddy for awhile, there's no other game that I would recommend, it is the full campaign with nothing cut out and is a true test of your skills playing through it on the "Insane" difficulty. The Xbox Live versus mode plays exactly like the campaign, except you are playing other humans. There are multiple gametypes including the classic Deathmatch, which works like Counter-Strike. There is the Assasination gametype, where you have to kill your target to score points. And the Excecution mode, where you have to bring down your opponent, then curb stomp them to finish them off, this is interesting, since you can be either revived by your teammates or excecuted by your enemies. If you are really interested in the behind the scenes stuff or the tin case, then get this version (I got mine in my Gold Box for $55), if not, just cheap out and get the standard version.

Simply Breathtaking, You'll Be Hooked From the Get Go, BUT...

Gears of War is everything you've heard it is, and then some.

While I wasn't a fan of third-person shooters, this game just hooked me and wouldn't let go. The 3rd person format allows for a well-developed system of "cover", or hiding behind objects during intense firefights. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be running and jumping around from concrete slab, to burned car, to doorway, seamlessly while punishing the dreaded Locust.

The concept of "active reloading" will keep your fingers busy during the otherwise boring reload.

The graphics are out of this world, and put any other shooter out on the market to shame (words cannot describe, you have to see the game to believe it).

This is an ADULT game, with violence that is not for the squeamish. The blood and guts factor is this game is phenomenal and is guaranteed to keep you yelling out loud with every chainsaw execution and head shot.

As a seasoned gamer who grew up with the "boss of each level" concept, this game brought back memories with situations like the Berserker at the end of Act 1 (great fun).

The immersion level of this game is up their as well. You'll find yourself talking in the storyline lingo, with expressions such as, "Oh no! A Boomer!".

Best shooter for the 360 out right now, hands down.

BUT! There is an apparent problem that this game is causing. During the whole of the campaign (I recommend you start out on "Hardcore" setting, "Casual" is a joke) my 360 would freeze now and then with the message of "Disk is Dirty" coming up. I checked the disk, which was clean, so I chalked it up to the fact that the game was rented. When the last cutscene ended, the game locked up permanently, and I couldn't load it at all after that. I tried 4 of my other games, which I used to play problem free, to no avail. I looked this issue up and I'm not the only one who has fallen victim to the Gears of War curse. There are numerous blogs throughout the internet complaining about the same issue (there's a review below with the same problem). After calling Microsoft, it turns out that I now need to get my 360 repaired at a cost of $150. Again, this is not an isolated issue! It's been happening a lot, just look it up.

Once I get my console fixed, I intend to buy the game anyway. It's THAT good.

5 stars not enough...........

SI TE GUSTA GEARS OF WAR TE GUSTARA ESTA VERSION LA DECIDI COMPRAR YA QUE LA VERSION NORMAL DEL JUEGO EN UN ACCIDENTE SE ME DAÑO. PUEDES VER EN LAS IMAGENES QUE HE GRABADO LO QUE VIENE EN LA CAJA PARA UN COLECCIONISTA ES ALGO QUE DEBES TENER. NO CRITICO EL JUEGO PORQUE PARA QUE HAYAN VENDIDO MAS DE 3 MILLONES DE COPIAS NO HAY MAS PRUEBA DE QUE ES EXCELENTE PARA LOS QUE AMAN LOS JUEGOS DE VIOLENCIA Y DONDE HAY HARTA SANGRE. YO JUGUE EL HALO 3 BETA Y EN MI MODESTA OPINION ESTE JUEGO NO TIENE MEJORES GRAFICOS QUE GEARS. ESPERO QUE LA VERSION DE HISTORIA DE HALO 3 TENGA MEJORES GRAFICOS
