Old but gold

I've owned the game since a couple of months after it's initial release.
I have one character in the game, and really don't feel like I need to have any more than that. FF11 was my first MMORPG.

I'll keep this simple;

1) The game is old, so the graphics are sub-standard. Expect that.

2) The world is huge, but don't expect to be able to wander just anywhere until you've done some serious level grinding.

3) Don't expect to be able to use teamspeak. A USB keyboard is really all that's needed however. I'll chat on the 360 network over the headset with a friend while playing but I used the keyboard for communication with everyone else.

4) Like any good MMO, you're going to find that somehow, a Functionally Retarded Window Licker (FRWL) got their hands on a controller and someone set them loose on the world of Vana'Diel, figuring they couldn't do much damage.
They were wrong.
Thankfully the FRWL's are few and far between and have lead to some absolutely hilarious Blogs and forums. (Google "[GM] Dave" Trust me. You'll laugh.)
This is actually a game where autistic downs syndrome kids make better gaming buddies than some "mentally healthy" adults that play the game.

5) MPK's (Monster-Player Kills) are a thing of the past. So don't even try. Unless you're a FRWL in which case go ahead and try, and I'll laugh as a football team of goblins jam frying pans in your sensitive places.

6) The game does have a story line, but it does not really pick up until you hit higher levels. If you party up with FRWLs, don't expect to see those levels anytime with in your first year of playing.

7) Partying up with other players is pretty much REQUIRED in this game. The lucky and the paitent could potentially solo up to about level 15, and I've even seen 20 (Blue Mage), but if you want to go higher than that you'd best expect tons of partying. This is where you will encounter the majority of your FRWLs.

8) Yes, you can actually purchase money online for in the game. Sorry, it'll only take you so far. Yeah you may be able to BUY the best armor in the game from the most expensive seller in the auction house, it's just too bad that you're too low a level, the wrong job class, and the wrong species to use it. Besides that, Square-Enix doesn't sanction it and will ban anyone they can prove purchaced Gil (the world's currency) online. As you go higher in level money stops becoming so much of a problem anyway, especially once you've learned a craft or two and can actually create ingredients to craft armor and weapons and other items. Then you can be like the other FRWLs and jack the prices up through the roof.

9) It's not WoW. If you want something like WoW, I suggest buying and playing WoW. Seriously. WoW players don't like FF11 FRWLs that login into WoW and complain about how it's "not as good as FF11." Same goes for FF11 players. So do the FF11 players a favor and don't become a WoW-FRWL.

10) T4k3 Ur m4d-l337 $k1llz, |\|' g0 |-|0m3. 1f U 7alK l1k3 7h15, n0 1 l1k3z U 4nyVV4y. U R 4 L337 FRWL.

11) No there are no roleplaying servers where you are Trogdar the soul compiler, the seventh son of Jor-El, savior of the land of Mos Eisly and slayer of the 143 fisted gerbil of doom.

All that stuff aside, I like the game. Far from the best game for 360, but I think the fees are reasonable for the moment. You get what you pay for after all. ($9.99 a month for Phantasy Star Universe...and it plays like a $9.99 game.)

Thus far the best MMORPG for the 360 console FF11 definately stands alone. Now if only we could get Microsoft to bring in WoW, Lineage 2, Star Wars Galaxies, etc... HINT! HIIINNNTTT!!!!

Best thing for MMOs yet

THE 360 IS THE BEST THING THAT HAPPEND TO FFXI
no questions about it.
the controls are 100% easier then PC keybaord.
the frame rate is betiful in the game
no lag at all
easy to set up macros with controler, vs the keyboard where u have to hit three keystokes for the PC version of this game.

for the people tha complain about the install time..
The 360 install time is not a problem.. does take like 3 hours.. most MMOs take over 10 hours of updating on PCs.. plus the 2 hour install.. so in my opinoin 360 is hte best thing that happend to FFXI

and for all the other people that complained about monthly fees...
you don't have to have the Xbox live membership to play this game, as long as you have an online connection you can play. you should read your manual -_-
there is also bulk priceing you can do, like pay for a full year, and it wil be like $5 month vs 10 or what ever it is.

Boooooooring.

I have to come out, before saying anything about Final Fantasy XI, that I've never played a massively-multiplayer online RPG before this game. I never gave them a chance, because I was scared I'd play occasionally then become addicted.
Final Fantasy XI Online for the Xbox 360 probably isn't the best game to get an impression on MMORPG's, because as both a game and an MMORPG, it falls short. As a game, it's boring. As an MMORPG, it just doesn't seem to be as exciting as other ones out there.
The first problem I had with this game was the four-hour download-and-install time that I had to sit through before I could even think about making a character and playing the game. Four hours of letting something install...what is this, 1996? C'mon, this is ridiculous. I understand that there are patches and expansions that were added on, but I don't care. I'm not playing a game for four hours, I'm waiting on a menu to leave the screen.
Once I actually began, I came across the biggest fear I had: Final Fantasy XI Online gives the player NO direction. It simply pops you into an open world and forces you to figure out where to begin. Sure, this isn't difficult for people who have played Final Fantasy XI on other consoles for years, but a newbie like myself is going to have a lot of problems and something should have been done to accomodate for that. Fortunately, the FFXI community was (mostly) nice enough to help me out. Some of them laughed at my pathetically low level, which was to be expected.
Final Fantasy XI Online's gameplay is very stiff. It's menu-based and has an awful interface, one that is more confusing than it should be. In the game, the characters move slowly and look like stiff mannequins while attacking and performing any simple action. The world itself is detailed to a minimal amount, which is very disappointing. The enemy designs weren't all that bad, but from a visual perspective, FFXI is lacking.
The music and sound effects are also pretty bland. Even the memorable Final Fantasy tunes don't sound as comforting as they usually do. Like most Xbox 360 games I've played, I found myself with the custom soundtrack pumping and overriding the in-game score.
I didn't have expectations for Final Fantasy XI Online, and it's a good thing, because I'd have been disappointed. I can see where the addictive qualities are. It's fun to complete missions. It's satisfying to level up. It's funny to watch a newbie player (like myself) get killed by the Forest Hares at the start of the game. But I can't find myself getting into this.
I do recommend that anyone looking into this MMORPG try it on the Xbox 360, since it contains the original game and every one of the expansions, including the new Treasures of Aht Urghan, which was also released on the PlayStation 2 and PC. But if you're looking for an Xbox 360 RPG, I'd tell you to pass on this.

I have always been a fan of Final Fantasy games, I also had a WoW account for over a year. However the latest adoption of bringing this title to the Xbox 360 was poorly done. To start it takes three hours to install, including an hour of downloading updates, and it uses 5 gig (yes 5 gig) of your hard drive. Next up, controls they are bulky, and not utilized properly. To really play the game you will need a USB keyboard. The game does not have achievements as the rest of the 360 games do.

I will be exchanging it tonight.

Massively Multiplayer Game with an Actual Story

I've played this game since its beginning it was released on the PC in October 2003. First off, it is labeled Final Fantasy XI: Online for a reason; it is a Massively Multiplayer Online RPG. It is along the lines of Everquest and World of Warcraft. You have to pay a monthly fee of $12.95, however, if you are only an Xbox Live Silver member (free Xbox Live user) you can STILL play this game.

There is a lot of stuff to do in this game. It is very time consuming and you are required to take the time to look for other adventurers to help you which can increase the time you spend on here. However, once you are in your groups, the game has an excellent sense of accomplishment and teamwork that is hard to find in other MMO games.

The visuals on the Xbox 360 are only slightly different than the PC version of this game: the draw distance is further, and the high definition allows you to read the text more clearly and see the monsters from farther away, the spells look more crisp, and the sound is in 5.1 surround all the time instead of just during the cutscenes like on the PS2 version. Other than that, I will admit there isn't much different aside from those points.

If you're looking for a Massively Multiplayer Online game that actually has a story and gives you reason to level, this game is it. Other games just ask you to and you never really see or feel a huge accomplishment when you reach "X" level. If you aren't into this genre or you don't feel like spending time getting into this game, then don't buy it.

Buyer Beware - Misleading Game

First of all it takes about 4 hours to get this game started... seriously. You have to download a ton of updates and setup your PlayOnline account. If you don't know what this is you're in for a real treat. You can't play this game without one and it costs money each and every month. Something they fail to tell you on the box or anywhere else. The interface for setting this up is so hard and if you ever have to cancel good luck! Just do a search on google for Playonline accounts, cancelling and other such keywords and you'll see how much trouble everyone has with this game.

I WOULD STAY AWAY IF I WERE YOU. THIS GAME IS A TOTAL RIP OFF.

Major Let Down

I am a parent who got suckered. Actually, I have never written a review for anything before. However, I find myself obligated in saving people from buying a product so poorly developed that it should have never been released in the market. I find it disgusting that a company took advantage of a "product name recognition" to exploit its fans. This game first off takes so long to get started that it takes the complete joy out of buying a new game. I spent over 4 hours trying to get myself set up. On top of my time being wasted, the game requires monthly fee's to play plus there is a charge for each character you build. Are you kidding me? This is corporation greed at its worst. I purchased the game because my son is a huge final fantasy fan. However, after my son played for three hours he became frustrated with the complexity and lack of direction in the game that he turned it off. I never seen my son so disappointed. To all those people who wrote "great" reviews, you should be ashamed! No one in his or her right mind can find this game worth all the money is required to play. At 12.99 a month playing fee for a year plus the cost of the game plus the cost of a character, one can be looking at paying over $200 for "ONE" Game.

Great game for a hardcore gamer

This is a great game. Beautiful graphics (amazing since the game came out years ago on PC) and a huge world that will take days to explore. The community is large (shared with both the PC adn PS2 versions!), friendly, and helpful. The thing that keeps this game interesting is the fact that you can change your job at any moment, without losing your other jobs level and stats. You are never stuck playing as one class your entire characters life, which keeps you playing because it does not get old.

The only negatives I would point out in this game is leveling is very time consuming and you require a party in most instances. Only play it if you plan on dedicating a lot of time to it and want to socialize with others in the game.

A hard game to get into

First of all, I'll just say that I have not played the 360 version of FFXI, but I have played this game on PC and PS2 since its NA release. The game has alot of problems, that's for sure. Prices on some servers for gear and other items are out of control, and some people who play are very rude and ignorant. However when you are dealing with humans, that is to be expected. Part of the enjoyment to be had from FFXI is getting to know people and gathering to do events that you can't do alone. That is also a major drawback of this game. It takes alot of time to do things, such as misisons. Getting together 18 people for a monster fight can take hours. However if you like challenges then this game is challenging. If you prefer a game that you can do 90-95% of the game alone then you could try WoW. And to the complaints about DLing for 4 hours to start, what do you expect? When you buy a game that has been out for 2+ years with updates every month or so, you have alot to Download. Alot of patches and things that can't be put onto the game disc have to be Downloaded, so be prepared. But the game itself is worth it if you want a challenge. It is a not a game you can play for an hour or so and get a fair shake at it. You have to get to a point where you start interacting with other people, that is when the fun starts. And like a reviewer before said, if you get into the game and play it, you will be playing for a long time. I haven't bought a single RPG since I purchased this on PC, so I have spent far less on video games than I would have if I was buying normal console RPGs, since one of those are 30-50 bucks a pop, thats 2-4 months of this game. And someone had said that it is extra for another chara, which is true. It is 1 dollar per extra chara on a single "Content ID"(which is what you set up when you install the game) and people usually use those chara's to store gear or other items, but you do not have to buy another chara. In the 2 years+ I have played I have only needed one chara. Another thing that ruins this game is the fact that there is not alot to do once you gain level 75(the higest lvl). There are very few things, and the things you can do get boring fast, leaving you to level another job. And leveling can be a pain, because you need to make a party after about level 10. But it is all worth it if you enjoy meeting new people and are willing to put forth an effort to learn the game. As far as the game itself, you have 5 races to choose from, each with stronger attributes than others depending on their most suited jobs(ex. Mithra have higher Agility and Dexterity because they are naturally better ninjas and theifs). For 3 of the races you can choose a gender, but that doesn't affect your attributes in anyway, but it can affect what equipment you can wear(some pieces may be female only, and some gear is also race specific). With the newest expansion the number of jobs increased to 18, but only 6 are usable when you begin. When you hit level 30 you can quest for 9 more, and the last 3 from the new expansion can be obtained anytime, but are dangerous missions, so maybe not until the 50's or higher. So the bottom line is that this game takes alot of time, but if you like that kind of game, and like meeting new people, this is a good game. If you don't like to take hours to complete a single fight or can't stand people, then look at another game.
