Any good things you've heard about this game are true: It really is that good. Yes, it's similar to the GTA games, but it's still an excellent game. The time period is captured nicely, from the way the streets and characters look down to the speech used in conversations. The characters faces look AMAZING. They must have used some new 3-d scanning technology or whatever because the characters from the move look PERFECT in-game. The controls take some getting used to, but it's a minor point. It's fun, open ended, and the customization of your characters face + clothes is great fun. An excellent game which will not dissapoint!!
Great but there are a couple of cons.

Anyone who is familar with the franchise
and the movies will know exactly what to
expect with this game. I rented a week
ago from a video store and here is what
I think after playing it. I liked it
alot but there were a couple of things that annoyed me.
One was that I nearly beat it and I just
had the rental for about 4 days! All in
all I put about 32 hours into the game.
It sounds like a lot but I'm glad that
I didn't shell out $[...] for it because I
would be REALLY upset.
The combat and the fighting are wonderful
in the game. There is a lot of great combat
that happens when you play. But one thing
that I noticed at the end of day 3 was that
everything is recylced, heavily. The people
who you have to kill look exactly like your
fellow mafia henchmen only the baddies have
coats of red, purple, tan or green instead of
black which are your guys.
Although that is another catch is the fact that
they are really not your guys. Even when you reach
don you can't order them to do this or that.
You can't even go into a firefight with another
member of the family (except for in the storyline).
I find this kind of unrealistic. Yeah I understand
having to fight everyone and beat everyone over the
head when you are an enforcer early in the game but when
you are underboss or don? Shouldn't you at least have a "soldier" who follows you around when you make capo (another rank in the game)?
---This is a spoiler section for the end of the game-----
Another thing that really bugs me is that once you do
the "Baptisim of fire" mission you level up and get respect.
That however is where the movie bids fairwell to the game.
You no longer see Michael, Or even Robert Duvall's character.
All the interaction ceases with the movie and then the next
mission after you complete that you become Don.
There is bunch of loose ends that I wish were tied to some extent by the makers of the game. Anyone whose seen the movies
know that Micheal takes over the family and becomes Don. Why
isn't it resolved? I was thinking that I would have to fight
Micheal for control of the family and control of the mob. But
no, magically you just become don. I felt kindly let down when
I finished it. I know that he moves the family out west in the movies but I saw no mention of this in the game...
Also when you do the hitman missions do not extort the racket or hotel when you have a mission active. It screws the game up and you can't make the hit. I was at 80% completeion because I couldn't kill the person on the hit list because of this..
But even with these minor issues I really enjoyed this game and it was great hearing the music and the voices behind the movie
again. I loved the recreation of old NYC also. Very cool.

This game will keep you busy for awhile. It's basically Grand Theft Auto meet's the mafia. There's a ton going on in this game you'll never see unless you get some kind of guide, so I would suggest that if you're a nut about doing every single thing.
You start off as a low level worker and move your way up, with the goal of becoming Don of N.Y. (they don't explain what happens to Michael if you become Don, nor do they explain why you're still taking orders from Clemenza when you're a Don but....)
You have missions to complete on top of the underlying mission of taking over businesses. This is tough in the begining until you build up your experience points. You get experience points for completing missions, going to new places, talking to certain people, flirting with call girls.....You also gain money that you use to buy safe houses, weapons, bribe police and take over rackets. The goals include to take over all businesses and rackets, as you go along you gain money with respect to your level. Initially, it's a pittance as the majority of what you collect get's kicked up to the Don but as you escalate in rank, the more you earn.
You have a wide array of weaponary that you either find or buy. Time drone's on at times as you are tasked to go to one part of NY and then go to the other part of NY. Sometimes, it's endless driving. You have to use your skills in a fight, especially in the begining. There is a targeting feature which is nice and a free shot feature which you won't use too often.
You'll have fights, gun fights and you get to rough up shop owners to get them to pay. You can blow up safe, rob banks, accept contracts to wack people which involve shooting, fighting, choking and even throwing off a bridge or into an oven.
The violence is ok, not as bloody as some and in fact I don't recall seeing blood at all but the sound effects of breaking a neck, hitting someone or getting hit are pretty good.
Your character can change looks, but this is only after exiting a currect scenario and then you can change clothes and hair type, color, etc....you can buy hats and glasses.
The game initially follows the Godfather I scenario's. When you wack all the Don's it then leaves the movie behind.
Dissapointment - No wacking or mention of Carlo.
This game is fun, but they could have made it somewhat better buy making certain changes to clothes buying, speed of when you get to certain areas. Going from Brooklyn to Hell's Kitchen is several minutes of boring driving. You have different car types but.....buy it; it'll be fun, especially if you're a fan of the movie.
Good, Not up to GTA: San Andreas standards

This game is pretty good but it really makes me appreciate the effort and creativity that went into GTA: San Andreas. There is quite a bit of repetition in this game. The observations in other reviews that "once you know the layout of one type of building, you know them all" is true. Another example is that even though years pass in the game, all the cars remain the same and there's only 5 different kinds even then. I can only assume that the project was behind schedule and they cut corners be reusing like crazy. Most of the missions are a bit easy and since the map tells you everything, there is no need/incentive to explore. Again, this may have been a compromise since the general lack of detail in the game would make forced exploration somewhat tedious. Finally, there can be quite a bit of driving, particularly when you don't have enough money to buy safehouses near where you want to be for a while.
All of the above being said, I have been playing all the way through the game. The part I enjoyed the most was taking over the larger sites such as warehouses and compounds. I like how the controls are set up. The controls for fighting are very good. There is sometimes some sluggishness in the gun targeting and firing but overall it works well.
In the end, though, this is no San Andreas. There's usually only one way to get anywhere and to complete missions as opposed to GTA: SA where you can bring individual creativity to much of the game. So, here's hoping that the GTA Liberty City Stories for PS2 coming out in June is very good.
A very good game. Exciting but a little too short.

I bought The Godfather: The Game off of eBay and I couldn't wait to see what it had in store. I had heard it was a good game so I thought why not get it?
When I first started playing it, it seemed like a really good game and it really is. Just like the Grand Theft Auto games, you can carjack people, shoot and kill people with a variety of weapons ranging from a baseball bat to a tommy gun and go on missions given to you by different characters. Unlike GTA, you have to extort businesses, buy out rackets, destroy rival family compounds and seize all warehouses and hubs. Doing these will give you the title of 'Don of New York City.'
People reading this might be confused about the Don of NYC part. You see, in this game, you start off as an Outsider for the Corleone family. Doing missions and gaining respect will eventually promote you to an Associate and so on and so forth. There are 7 ranks in this game: Outsider, Associate, Soldier, Capo, Underboss, Don and Don of NYC.
The game has characters from the original movie like Vito Corleone, Michael, Sonny, Freddie, Tessio, Clemenza, etc. In fact, some of the characters are even voiced by the actors who portrayed them in the original movie. Marlon Brando, before his death, recorded the dialogue to reprise his character Vito Corleone. James Caan also provided the voice for Sonny Corleone. But Al Pacino is absent from this game. For some reason, he refused to provide the voice for his famous character, Michael Corleone.
Famous events that happened in the movie (Luca Brasi's murder, Paulie Gato's murder, etc.) are featured in the game and are beautifully done, I should say. The graphics and sound quality on this game are fantastic.
The only problem I have with this game is that it's a bit too short. Excluding the prelude (which is like the tutorial), there are only 17 missions you have to complete. However, there are side missions you must complete to become Don of NYC, like hit contracts, bombing rival family warehouses, etc. I made the title of Don of NYC in just over 24 hours, which is short for a game.
But overall, I do recommend this game. In my opinion, the Grand Theft Auto games are better but I still enjoyed playing The Godfather, nevertheless. 4/5 overall.

The Godfather: The Game allows you to live the Godfather movies. The storyline and characters pertains to the movies very well. The missions get repetitive over time because every mission involves driving, driving and more driving! But overall if your a fan of the Godfather like I am, you wont care. (Respect the Family!)
Respect the true Godfather- Francis Ford Coppola!

OK, it's a great game with clever storytelling and lots of cathartic violent fun. But it's shameful the way Electronic Arts and the game creators, in their "Making of" documentary on the Special Edition, have conspicuously decided to not credit the true creator of the Godfather: Francis Ford Coppola. I heard that Coppola was not happy with the game because of its concentration on violence (What did he expect? A gnocchi recipe and wine making puzzle challenge?) But nevertheless, talk about vendettas! For the creators of the Godfather videogame, poor Francis is sleeping with the fishes.
awsome

Godfather is great. You can create your own character and buy him clothes. I have yet to really get into the game but I am glad I bought it.
Good game, but certainly could have been better

it is really fun to play, but to be a 2006 game graphic is not so great: I mean, compared to Mafia is better overall, but most of the moves are not that realistic, like fights,or how cars handle..the customization is cool but...I feel like its price is not really worth it. Bottom line is: enjoyable, but not impressive.
