Truly awful; don't waste your money

As a Bruce Campbell fan and long-time game player, I'd like to say that this game is TERRIBLE! Within the first two minutes I knew that I had wasted my money.

The controls for Ash are awkward and the gameplay is clumsy. The graphics are uninspired. I found the music and sound to be lacking.

As a whole, this game was amateurish and extremely boring. I threw down my controller in disgust after 15 minutes, failing to have found any redeeming qualities. I am disappointed Bruce lent his name to such a stinker.

Lets be honest with ourselves...

I know its hard to accept, but this game reeks. Its just a bad game. I wanted to love it. I really really really wanted to love it because I am a HUGE fan of the Evil Dead series and an even bigger fan of Bruce Campbell, but this game is just so bad that it isnt worth the torment of sitting through. I was willing to overlook almost any flaw, but there are just too many in all the wrong places.

I will list the positives just so you know Im being fair: 1. Good graphics, atmosphere, etc (at least on the DC) 2. Great idea (Evil Dead deserves a video game) 3. Great camera work (though copied from Resident Evil, it works and is the only way that would fit the theme) 4. Inovative controls (makes good use of all of Ash's weaponry)

All of these are good things but are totally destroyed by the mistakes of the game makers. No, it isnt old school gameplay, its just bad (this is from someone who stills plays NES regularly). The enemies get a million cheap hits, the game play is boring and repetitive, the bad guys respawn like frickin roaches, and frankly (and I hate to say it) Bruce's little quips and taunts are just so unemotional and flat that they got old in a matter of minutes... this from someone who considers Bruce a comic genius - hell, even the intro to Jack of All Trades makes me laugh.

I know it sounds harsh, but the people saying its good just dont want to admit that one of our most intensely anticipated games is a bomb. Its time to let go. If it wasnt based on Evil Dead, no one would like it at all. This is a bad game based on a great film license. We should be used to that by now. While they paid alot of attention to asthetic details, they forgot to make a game that's even remotely fun.

Bottom line: great idea; horrible game.

What a piece of junk

After waiting months for this game (it's a couple months late), I got it home only to find that it was completely unplayable. The graphics are decent, but the control is horrible. I got only 10 minutes into the game before giving up completely. These guys need to learn how to usability test their games before shipping.

THQ... be ashamed!

Now, you have two types of successful game developers: There are the companies that rely on their own creativity and love for the gaming industry to develop cutting edge games that everyone loves... Then you have companies like THQ who rely heavily on franchise titles to sell their games. They have the title "Evil Dead" AND THAT IS ALL. This game is a disaster. If you are a true fan of the Evil Dead series, you should be insulted by this game. It never comes close to resembling the original movies. Where are the gratuitous amounts of firehose blood? Where is the slapstick and camp? Why is Ash so mundane? I doubt the developers ever saw the movies. The game play itself also suffers greatly. Imagine the resident Evil Series with even worse play control. Creatures respawn immediately after they are defeated. Was this game ever beta tested??? Did no one complain in development???!!! For those of us who once again fell for the marketing scheme, I suggest rioting in the streets. Bad THQ! Bad boy! All others must avoid this game at all costs!!!! Not since Atari Pac Man has there been such an atrocity!!! ...grumble grumble.

Not worth it at any price

how can anybody like this terd yeah it has neat graphics and sound and bruces voice but the controls are the worst in videogame history no joke basically u walk around with jerky animation using a button to flail your chainsaw in every direction with no aiming at all even worse it gets stuck in the creatures and runs out of gasoline cause of technical glitches the whole game u are running 15 frames per second in grainy semispooky backgrounds flailing your chainsaw at poorly drawn creatures this games a joke i own 5 game systems nearly 400 games and beat ever 1 of them but i wont even play this disgrace 1 time even for 6 bucks its not worth it

Don't "swallow this".

I have to admit, I was pretty excited that an evil dead video game was to be released. I also thought a "resident evil" format would also be a good way to present the game. Nope. Where is Capcom when you need them? I couldn't play this game much longer than 10 minutes before I threw it down in disgust. The idea is great, but it just wasn't pulled off properly. The play control is seriously bad, the voice overs just get annoying, and the over all feel of the game isn't what it could have been. The funny thing is, I thought since they had so many delays in its release that it would be really great and polished. Wrong again. Not enough redeeming qualities. Evil dead was a great "B" movie! This doesn't even rate as a "C" game.

A disappointment

What can I say? It's a Resident Evil [copy] that I got really frustrated playing. The controls [are bad] and even the Evil Dead references aren't enough. Avoid if you're not a big Evil Dead fan.

Doesn't live up to the name of the Movie

Sure this is an Evil Dead game but whos kidding. This game isn't that great. Games based on movies usually suck But I gave this game a try(yes the Dreamcast version of course) and it wasn't all that gret.

The graphics are ok I guess. The controlls suck. Gameplay is dull otherwise if you love Evil Dead and want to try out the games steer clear away from this hunk of junk. It's your choice but trust me it's not worth the money. Crappy game.

I give this a 2 out of 5 stars...

The man, the myth, the legend : Bruce Campbell. In a video game. It's a fanboys dream. His voice has appeared in some playstation classics such as Broken Helix and Pitfall 3D, but never in his much immitated role as Ash from the Evil Dead movies. So this game is a godsend, right ?

Well, not entirely. THQ has surely shown it's love for the series of movies. Overall, if it's in the movies, it's in the game. Everything from the dead girlfriend to the disembodied hand are covered in it. THQ knew that as long as the fans got what they wanted to see, they would buy it. They even went so far as to add a one-liner button so you could hear Bruce Campbell's funny catchphrases as many times as you want.

The first half of the game covers the first two movies. Ash takes a trip back to the hut to see if all he had been through was just a dream. It doesn't take long until a turn of events causes the tape with the reading of the necronomicon to be played and the dead rise again. Starting with Ash's trademark chainsaw arm and an axe in the other, you set off to stop the evil again. The second half of the game takes place after you are transported back to the medieval age to wreak a little more havok on the plans of the undead. It even ends with a famous twist like the previous Sam Raimi movies.

The gameplay really takes the game away from the mainstream gamers and leaves this to only the fans of the movies. Overall, it's just the control scheme from the earlier Resident Evil games, except the difficulty is unreasonably high. You can tote two weapons, one on each hand, and do some creative combos - all 3 of them , really. Upgrades to the chainsaw are aquired a few times during the game, even turning it into a hacksaw. But, the difficult part is that whenever you are in a fight, 90% of the time it's a hand to hand brawl, so you are always guaranteed to get bashed. You are constantly using health packs after every fight. And the creatures are constantly respawning, so even though the health packs are in great quantity, fighting a monster more than twice ends up sucking up inventory and health.

Overall, this game is great for fans of the movie, but gamers just looking for a good resident evil clone should just keep looking.
