I was expecting something different when I bought this. But I don't think I wasted my money.
This is not really a "pet sim" game... The goal is to try to breed the seven "Magic fish", and for some bragging rights, or just to give yourself more to do, you could try to breed all 780-some species of fish.
As the very subject matter "fish" should make evident, this is not a very engaging game (though at least more engaging than real pet fish). It is much better as a now and then (an hour here, a few minutes there) LEISURELY game; as even on the fastest speed setting, things don't move all that quickly.
Adults can enjoy the small challenge (likely more thrilling than the actual fish-breeding business); and kids can enjoy the virtual pet quality of it (at least tapping the tank wont kill THESE fish).
So, to conclude; it wasn't the pet sim I thought it was, but I do enjoy it.

i did fish tycoon a year ago on my pc and spent hours and hours doing it. i was thrilled to see it for my ds. if you like games like this, you will love it. you have to find the 7 magic fish and in the meantime, breed, heal, sell fish and also buy equipment for your aquariums. you can stop time if you go away a long time or you can speed up time so everything goes faster. once you find a breed of fish that sells for some bucks, just keep breeding it over and over and you will get money to buy the special eggs, the potions and equipment. then it makes it easier to find the magic fish. i just finished plant tycoon on my pc and hope ds comes out with the game for it. fish tycoon is a game where you need to spend some time breeding and making your sick fish well and upgrading your equipment. once you get the hang of it, you will not be able to put it down. a great game for everyone but especially older folks (over the age of 12 lol). some fish are very very pretty and unusual looking and it is fun to breed different ones just to see what you get. sometimes, you will get one of the magic fish ! good luck

I have to admit that this game takes some patience. I've had other Tycoon games in the past, and played a demo of Zoo Tycoon, and this one I didn't "get" at first. Now that I've gotten past my first hurdle I really like it a lot, certain fish sell better than others, some sell for more than others and that's where the strategy comes in.
Now I need to figure out the 7 Magic Fish!
Annoyingly addictive

Definitely worth the price, but it is not a game I should really say I like, I just can't stop playing it. You are driven to keep making money and trying new breeding pairs. Gameplay is extremely slow, even on double speed. Too many fish fry die too often, making it frustrating and hard, yet I find too many games today are over in a matter of hours. Graphics are not great. BUT, for $20, I have gotten more than enough value out of it already- quite the challenge. Not for those without a lot of patience.
Yawn....

As a kid, I thought that Fish Tycoon was very boring. It's a great idea for the game, but it is a very slow moving... and takes a LLLOOONNNGGGG time for your fish to grow. I'm a fan of the computer version, so I thought I would give the DS version a try... It was not worth the money. The screen graphics are fair, and instead of having a large view of your fish tank, you can only see one little section at a time. You have to drag your sytlus across the screen to view different parts of the fish tank, so it's very hard to tell how many fish you actually have in your tank. It's great for someone if they want to play it while watching TV, since you have to wait so long for your fish to grow, the game requires very little attention... you just have to check on it once in a while. If you like slow moving games or have a LOT of free time on your hands, then this product would be great for you. But if you are like me and prefer to actually be playing something exciting or semi-interesting, then this product is not for you.
