As a true football fan and serious gamer, I was excitedly waiting for the new EA franchise Madden 2002 and what great improvements have supplemented the past games. I was a little dejected as the graphics, although improved, have not changed significantly. Quite a few of the scenes such as the opening toin coss and stadium entrance and stadium appearence appear unchanged from the Madden 2001. Madden and partner's vocal catch phrases, which are quite annoying, are the same as Madden 2001 also. Some of the features are nice, but if you are happy with Madden 2001's game play, there is no real reason to purchase this title besides the fact it has the expansion Houston franchise team and cheerleaders on the player collector cards. I fealt some of the playoff teams from the 2001 season such as Miami are rated extremely low. Overall, the gameplay is fun, especially in the franchise and season modes, but not additionally challenging from past titles. The "new and improved" AI improved on stuffing the run, but doesn't appear to affect the passing game. I threw for over 400 yds the first time playing with Kurt Warner against Buffalo. The new kick meter takes getting used to as it is much more challenging. Buy the game if you are a true Madden fan as I, but if you are happy with the 2001 version, stick with it. Happy gaming.

Good gameplay, but what's up with the madden cards?

Overall, I was pretty impressed with Madden 2002. The graphics were excellent as usual. What really impressed me about the latest Madden game is the improved play of the computer. The computer actually puts up a fight instead of scoring 7 points to my 70. Another thing I really liked was that the computer runs the ball more in 2002. In 2001, i would be surprised if the computer ran the ball more than three times a game.

Something that did disappoint me, however, was the Madden cards. I thought that this would finally be the year that the good people at EA Sports would include the great teams of the past, like the '85 Bears and the great Buffalo teams of the early 90's. After all, the PS1 has them, and I thought the N64 was supposed to be a superior machine. What do we get added on instead? Cheerleader cards. i guess these would be okay if they did something other than make the crowd cheer loud for the whole game. That can get pretty annoying. I've heard some people say that when the crowd is pumped up, your team plays better, but it is just not true. I would definitely rather have 31 classic teams than 31 cheerleader cards any day.

So, if you're looking for an improvement to you 2001 Madden game, I would highly recommend Madden 2002. I can't wait to see what they come up with for the Nintendo gamecube (and if THAT version doesn't have the classic teams, i'm going to scream!)

First impressions...

After waiting a week for my copy of Madden 2002, I ripped open the box excitedly and thrust the cartridge into my N64 and flipped on the switch. The initial menu is less complicated than any other Madden game, and more helpful. After choosing my team in exhibition, my heart sank as I saw the exact same intro, cardboard cutter sidelines and coin toss that had been in every other game. I immediately rose again when I first saw the players. They have greatly improved since the 2001 version especially in that the players rarely go through each other. Gameplay wise, the AI is visibly improved, I think we tend to forget that human are more creative than computers, thus leading to unreal stats such as Eddie George running for 467 yards on 39 carries. After my initial thrashing of the Houston Texans, who by the way are a team without names, obviously, and are easily the worst in the game, my next opponents were the Oakland Raiders, who made it very difficult to pass. The passing game is very confusing, I slid six times while trying to throw, and often threw to the wrong reciever. At first, I felt I had wasted my money, but the incredible gameplay and good plays they have quickly overcame those feelings. I encourage those of you who dont think much of first impressions to buy, because this game gets better every day.

Great Game!

I've had this game for about a week and it is one of the best if not thee best football game I have ever played! Aside from the comments from Mr. Madden and Summerall that you hear at least 8 times a game it is fun. The controls are not that hard, I am still learning to run the ball better, but passing is not that hard! The graphics are great and you can choose Madden Classic mode to play Madden '93 just to see how far it has all come! The only other thing I noticed that could be worked on is that all the players on the sidelines wear the jersey #88!

I noticed someone else put this in their review so here we go. With the Madden 2000 team I set the following records playing 8 min quarters. Culpepper passed for 730 yards and 8 TD's both records, total TD's 12, pts scored 82, total yards 872. This was against the Browns!

This game is a great follow up to Madden 2001 with the most updated rosters. Great gameplay. Love this game.

Do you think they could have added some NEW SOUND BYTES?

First, the improvements over Madden 2001 for Nintendo: New players (but not up to date with the Fall 2001 NFL rosters), more challenging placekicking and punting, "Mulligans" (take-overs), graphics are just a tad better than 2001.

Now, the downside: Aside from the fact that the COLOR of the cartridge has changed (it's black instead of blue) this is essentially the same game as 2001s, including Madden's and Summerall's commentary -- I would have thought they could have included some new phrases to go along with the repetitive "That ball is probably 'lopsided' after that kick" and "You used to be able to put 'stickum' on your hands to catch those balls, now they've got those gloves...", I mean if they're going to claim its a new game (as the title implies), how about some NEW stuff??

Madden does it again

Wow, I have always been a fan of Madden football games but this one is far better. The rosters are close to those of the 2001 season, but how exact do you want to be? People get traded all the time ya know. The graphics are better than last year and I love the training modes this game has. I have been known to run up the score a little in madden 2001 but with this game you cant do that right away. Okay, so I put 60 points on the bills playing with chicago but what do you want, its the bills. There are only two things that I have a problem with in this game.

The cheerleader cards? Whats up with that, I mean, you could have put out referee cards and it would have been better, put some classic teams of the past up there or something else. Cheerleaders are just eye candy for the Television cameras anyway, they get ratings for having short skirts thats all. I digress.

The second thing, Mulligans, who gets a mulligan in football? I mean, come on, lets be realistic here. Its not Madden Golf.

Get this game if you are a football fan, if not then go home and play Zelda for the 10,0000th time.

Unbeatable

Talk about incredable! This product is the best game since madde 2001. I have all the maddens but this defniately takes the cake. The graphics are good gameplay is great controls are the same as always but the best improvement is difficulty and realism. For madden 2001 it was hard to pass but easy to kill the other teams 60-3. NOw though passing is more realistic and people dont run the exact same rought every time. But the computer is actually harder with better offense. Running is fun and much simpler. Its especially fun with explosive people like marhsall faulk. The good thing is people like him pull away alot but can also get stuffed unlike madden 2001 where you could cet 4-7 yards but it was impossible to get like 30 where in this game if your good you can. Also they make it so some teams really are steller(St.Lewis, Minnesota, Indinapolis are the main ones) if you want to really control the game you can.In madden 2001 every team had a weakness. But in 2002 St. Lewis especially has none. Sry if this is a bit long so i'll make the overall review brief: Graphics 10, Controls 10, realizm, 8.5, Fun 10. A must buy
