This is without doubt one of the best games available for your computer, even if it isnt the newest one, doesnt have the best graphics or sound and all. But it is complex, every time you play it, different, and you can play the game also with your own restrictions and ideas to achieve your goal, which might, for you, vary from the one fixed by the game, why not?
Try for example to win the game without fighting one single war... It's difficult, but possible, so much about wars being impossible to avoid :)
I do like the balance between administration and action. You can manipulate a certain set of elements in your cities and conclude the consequences... It is good to know what is going on and what you can do to either keep the situation stable or improve it... And there is still plenty of action left in case a war with a neighbouring civilization is breaking out...
All in all, a well balanced game offering hours and hours of fun.
As for the scenarios: I checked them out but well, I must admit I never really could get into them as I could for the traditional Civilization game... Most of those scenarios need big improvement to gain the same complexity as the original game.
It's not Civ II

As a HUGE fan of Civ II (I've spent more time with that game than I spent in High School), I was pretty excited when this came out. Sure, it looked different, but it had lots of really cool additions. Now, a week has passed, and I must say that this game kinda sucks. It lacks the primary component that Civ II has. PLAYABILITY. It's so freaking slow as far as game play goes, and the battle scences are simply horrid. Civ was like a nice little chess game on the nth scale. This is Might & Magic with four billion rules. There's a difference. Wait for Alpha Centauri. Sid Meyer actually had a part in that.
It's just unplayable

It's a great idea gone horribly wrong: up the complexity of Civilization and Civ II, put in more units, more types of government, and watch the Civ addicts go into paroxysms of ecstasy.
Hollow laugh. Instead, I got a game that took a full minute to one move just one piece, even with the 48M of RAM that the makers recommend. It would take me hours to finish one full turn in the later stages of the game, and I just don't have years to waste with this mess. With every agonizing minute, I was able to think about what I was missing away from the computer. Fresh air. Swimming. Human contact in coffee houses. Let's face it, when a computer game can't keep your interest sustained, when it actively drives you to shut the contraption off and get a life, it's just not a very good computer game. Stick with the livelier, faster Civ II.

You can probably tell from the title of this review that I like this game quite a bit. If I had just bought a computer and were looking for a first game to purchase, this would definitely be it.
Why is this so great? First of all is the price. I paid around $50.00 for the original Civ II some years back. Today, you can get GOLD edition with more options for half that.
Secondly, even though Civ II is a strategy game, it is not difficult to get into. The instruction book is very well-written, but the best way to get the hang of it is simply by playing it. There is a tutorial which takes you step-by-step through the playing process.
I own some other strategy games, and Civ II is easily the best. It's a whole lot easier to play than a game like Caesar II, and much more enjoyable.
Warning: if you buy this, you lose ALL TRACK OF TIME when you play it. It's that addicting. Bravo!
Best game for the PC!

This has to be one of the best games that I have played! It is the best one in the trilogy, with its great graphics and wide choice range. Do not get this game if you don't have time, It can be one of the longest and most addictive games for the PC! Also try the great multiplayer mode with your friends!

And Multiplayer Gold is the version that I purchased for myself. The graphics are not spectacular or anything, but generally you don't buy a strategy/sim for that.
Multiplayer Gold is very much the same game as the regular version, but the added scenarios are a plus. What I really like though, is the ability it gives you to make scenarios of your own. I'm working on one based on the life and times of William Wallace myself, and it's rather easy. Be warned, though, it is time-consuming.
If you already have Civ II, you probably won't want to dish out the extra cash. However, if you're looking at buying Civ II for the first time, go ahead and get Gold. I found it cheaper than the original where I got it.
Hours of interesting, addictive fun

Civilization II became my favorite game after the first time I conquered the world. This game pleases both the crave for fighting, and the intellectiality of perfecting your Civilization. Although it takes a while to play, it is fun the entire time.
The scenarios are mostly well done, but to play them you should be a fairly advanced player. Designing your own is one of the best aspects of the game, and you should definitely try it.
Multiplayer works all right, but it is a bit complex to use. However, it is a lot of fun, especially on home networks.

All the different scenarios are great. All the different units really make it fun.You definitely will not get tired of playing this game! Can't wait for Civ III

this game has moderetly good graphics, but its exxelent gameplay makes up for that. it provides days of fun. the diplomacy options are amzing. The combat is plain and unorigianl, but it has a ton of Wonders that allow tons of advancements. This is my favorite game.

Civ: CtP is the latest iteration of the Civilization family -- in fact, it would be fair to refer to it as Civilization III.
Most people who have played Civ or Civ II will be able to quickly get up and running with Civ:CtP, as many of the concepts -- settlers, city and coutryside improvements, and so forth -- remain. But there are some changes in detail that make this game more than just a graphics upgrade.
One of the niftiest new features, in my opinion, is the ability (obtained via patch from the MacSoft web site) to play by email... allowing different players on different schedules to play together, without requiring them to arrange to be online at the same time.
