Extraordinary

Lara Croft on the tiny screen does some amazing things in a mighty small arena -- in the first half dozen panels of this sidescroller, she walks, runs, somersaults, jumps, grabs, pulls levers and shoots (with her magic Hollywood Special pistol that never runs out of ammo) scorpions, bats and snakes, and saves game at the first Silver Crystal to come along, with another crystal tantalizingly visible just beyond reach. It truly is amazing. The effect is like reading the Classic Comics version of Tomb Raider 3 -- lots of temples and jungles action, and every plot point and traditional Tomb Raider gimmick represented (or at least suggested) in the frame. Don't get me wrong, it's not a movie (even the "movies" are comic-style panels with dialog between still frames), and the graphics are primitive -- but Ms. Croft is rendered with character and flexibility intact. We get sucked into the game almost immediately, putting the GBC Tomb Raider (aka "The Nightmare Stone" but the 4-color printed paper label on this dark green transparent gamepak just says "Tomb Raider") in the same company as Link's Awakening. I was delighted to collect this, and even more delighted with the unexpected level of play.

This game is really good! It is challenging, but come on no one wants a five minute game! I have beat the game once, but it is has a nice length, so I can play again without being bored.

My 7 year old sister even thinks it's fun! All my friends think this game is superb also!

Easy but fun

I thought that this Tomb Raider game was much easier than the rest of them, but still equally fun. It's all in 2D and you have to go through puzzles, mazes, caves, etc. It's a great game to buy for any Tomb Raider or action adventure fans.

Lots of hype, but very poor game

Lara looks like a stick insect and there are so many moves and controls it's very confusing. Also, i didn't even know where to go and the enemies are stupid. Do not go out and buy this, either hire it first or don't bother at all.

I'll Take Mine Supersized...

Lara Croft has made a crossover, a now 8-bit Lara finds herself jumping, swimming, and flipping her way across your Game Boy Color screen...sounds good right? On paper. This game is just missing something-you don't make meatballs without meat and that is what this game is missing...meat. The graphics are great(probaly the best for Game Boy so far), and it is nice to see Lara make her way over to Nintendo, but in crossing that street Lara has lost something-the charm that made her so popular. That great puzzle element has been taken out and replaced with an endless maze of platform jumping and back tracking. There is no longer that feeling of accomplishment-now only a feeling of sheer frustration. It become mindless and almost sadistic. Another real twisted idea is that NO background noise was included! In the Playstation versions you have those great "tomb" noises, and the bells and whistles when you find something fabulous-here you are left to your screams and curses. It is empty. I need something or else I'll go crazy! Another point to make is the controls. The Tomb Raider series is notourious for it's strange and sometimes awkward controls and this is no exception. Lara enjoys jumping up when you want her to move forward, not grabbing ledges, and even plunging to her death-so be warned. Like the other games it takes time. Now I will admit that for some strange reason the game is a bit fun...I am not sure why. Maybe it is because the Playstation editions are so cool that it spills over, or maybe it is just because I can play a Tomb Raider game just about anywhere...or maybe it is because while the game lost it's charm a new brand of fun took it's place. The game does have a lot of good points. The graphics are really well done, it is challenging(a big feat for Nintendo), and there are plenty of "power-ups" laying around just waiting to be swooped up. It is very inventive for the Game Boy format; it isn't just an ordinary jump 'n shoot game. The levels are expansive(a bad point-depending on your point of view). I would call it a "good" game-not a great game. Hard-core Tomb Raider fans probaly will find this adventure a little tame, although it is great for younger players who may love Lara's adventures but find her other expeditions on the tough side-the side scrolling format might be a easier for them. So the final verdict...give this game a whirl but build your library on Lara's 32(and soon 128)bit adventures.

Lara just ROCKS on the GBC!

This is a super game! I am in my 20s and cannot be considered a "hardcore" gamer, but this one is great. I tried playing Tomb Rauder on the PC and was completely frustrated, but find that the controls are much simpler and easy to handle on the GBC. The graphics are wonderfully detailed- when Lara is climbing across a ceiling on a vine, leaves fall occasionally, making the game seem that much more realistic. I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes action/adventure type games- there is certainly plenty to explore here with Laura!

Another good game with significant differences

Tomb Raider is a great game. It is different from other platformers in a few noticable ways. The biggest difference is that Lara is bigger than other platformers like Mario and Rayman. This is a welcome change to the eyes. There are multiple different ways to run and roll and jump and grab and so on, but the controls are simpler than other Tomb Raider games. It is easier to see what can be held or grabbed than what can't be. And the only really easy way to die is to fall on spikes. Anyways this is a good game to buy with an easy format.

Pretty fun and easier compared to other Tomb Raiders

BUY the game. The game has great graphics for game boy color, somewhat similar to the SNES. In a side scrolling format, it is easier than the the other Raiders, making it more fun. The controls are easy to use once you learn them, considering the 2 button limitation on the game boy. The in-game cut scenes looked really cool. There may be a few bugs still needed to be worked out. I still remember killing a machine-gun toting bad guy from a ladder, even though he was on the top of the same ladder! This game isn't seemingly impossible like the other games.

Holding Lara in Your Hands is a Joy!

The redoubtable Lara Croft rules the Gameboy! With guns blazing, the long-legged Lara once again undertakes a dangerous adventure, this time in an underground tomb in South America. This game has outstanding colorful graphics and cut scenes and is great fun to play. Lara's movements are very fluid and realistic. You almost feel the pain when the tiny Lara gets impaled on stalagmites.

The game is a 2D platformer with puzzle elements and lots of variety and many large areas to cover. Some professional reviewers have said the controls are a little difficult. I had no trouble with the controls after a brief learning period and feel the comment is unwarranted. I recommend this game highly.
