This game is *really* creepy, and interesting to follow even for non-X-Philers! If you have the episodes on DVD, a must is to review the episodes "Tunguska" and "Terma", as you will hit all the characters, and heck, your X-File has to do with an incident in Tunguska, Russia.
There's lots of inside jokes for the fans, I'm not even finished with the first episode, but I've noticed "Lazarus street", the beer bottles have the betty tattoo from "Never Again" on them, the soda machine from the movie is in the garage stop, and going into the "Adult" section of the video store when you're Mulder is a must...
On the main menu there's a really cool (but long) "intro" which is a bunch of X-Files moments set to a Mark Snow tune. Really awesome.
This game is really awesome. If you've played Resident Evil then you will have the buttons down in no time.
Should have been better...

As a fan of the show, I will probably be a bit more kind to this game than it actually deserves. The storyline is decent and there are many direct references to the show. You certainly can't complain about the voice talent as the original characters were on board for this game, not only Mulder and Scully but also the Lone Gunmen, Skinner, Krychek, CSM, Marita, and even Kersh. There are quite a few nods to the show itself, everything from the black oil that posed a threat throughout the series to posters in the video store (which is also named after an episode), to street names. A nice touch that will be recognized by fans. Mulder and Scully have separate but intersecting storylines so you get to play two games for the price of one. Both are immersing and character-related. The story is surprisingly addictive and once you get caught up, you'll put it down for probably only one reason, which leads me to...
The bad points of the game are extremely hard to overlook. This feels like a very early (like original playstation early) Resident Evil. The characters, while having a likeness to the actor seem clunky and clumsy. Somewhere along the line, Mulder became cross-eyed and Scully apparently had breast implants. The controls of the game are HORRENDOUS. I don't care how much you play it, you never really get used to it and will probably spend a good bit of time running around in circles while something attacks you. The camera angles are an issue throughout and the "X" icon, which cues the discovery of items is so sensitive that if you aren't in the exact right spot, you'll miss it completely. The auto-aiming feature of the game is beyond annoying and half the time you completely miss the target even though it is literally right in front of you. The puzzle solving aspect of the game could be quite irritating I suppose, search for a door, search for a key, go back to the beginning of the level to find the door again, combine three or four items in your inventory to create something that you can actually use, etc. but I am willing to overlook that as it is typical of these types of games. What I can't overlook is the HUGE number of glitches in the game. The FMV don't play half the time and some of the cut scenes actually start skipping or the screen just turns black. Even if you do see it, it's likely that you won't have any volume. Nothing like watching Scully spout off for five minutes without being able to hear a word. Hope it wasn't anything important...oh she's gone now, guess they decided to split up. I never did get to see the very last part of the game because of this. Can't blame it on the disc copy either because I tried a couple of them and on different consoles.
Ok, so bottom line, the storyline is good and ties in well to the show. Fans of the show are treated to many references that would be missed by non-fans. The music and voice talent are excellent and the game does effectively capture the mood of the show. The two separate but intertwined storylines of Mulder and Scully make it the equivalent of two short games in one and both are good. The controls however are hideous and quite frankly unforgivable with the calibre of design available for video games. Why you are not able to run when you have both the gun and flashlight equipped is beyond me and I'm not even bringing up the camera angles again. The FMV cut scenes are glitchy and won't play half the time. The same is true of the bonus features that you unlock. The extras are actually quite disappointing. B-Rolls (of everyone in the show except Mulder and Scully), teasers, art work and story boards. Overall, the game should have been quite good but the mechanics are so bad that they are difficult to overlook and frankly drag this game down into the clearance bin. If you are a die-hard fan, then you'll probably still want it. Otherwise, get something that won't make you want to fling the controller across the room.
Survival Horror, Basic

This game is just another basic survival horror game like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. If it wasn't the fact it was The X-Files, this game could have gone down the drain. But seeing the old characters of the series and how it ties in with the storylines makes it very exciting for the fans. The scenarios and puzzles of the game really relate to the series and that makes it a more fun game to play. You actually get the feel that you are watching an episode of the X-Files and a part of it as well.
With these facts involved, I would have given a better review; however, I found the camera angles and controls very annoying. It's the type of game where if you push upward, the character moves in that direction according to the current camera angle rather than the concept where you push upward and your character is always moving in a forward direction. I hate this especially when you are running from 'boss' monsters and at a certain aspect point the camera view switches two to three times. This causes your character's movement to go haywire, running in all different directions while the monsters are eating you alive.
Maybe some may not agree, but I think the character movement should have been assigned in one way where UP is forward, LEFT moves left, and so on. The constant shifting of the camera angles makes it difficult to control. Of course, after a while you get a hang of it, but the fact this conditioning has to take place made it difficult to enjoy the first few hours of the game.
Luckily, you get to play two different versions of the game in a sense (you get to choose to play as Scully or Mulder), which is a big plus. The storyline may be the same, but you still get to see it in another person's view, based on the "character's character" in the show.
It's better than expected

X-Files: Resist or Serve has recently been released by Vivendi Universal. I picked up the game recently and found it impossible to put down. I found it to be better than expected, and really a good game overall.
Overview:
X-Files is a more than adequate game that satisfies your thirst for Horror. It's a Resident-Evil style Survival Horror game with some interesting twists to peak your interest. Additionally, the DVD content adds a nice amount of replay value. And as an added bonus, the game is only $30 bucks, brand new.
Pros:
* Intuitive gameplay. The game is relatively linear, so minimal time is spent trying to solve the puzzles that go along with it.
* R.E. Style: X-Files patterns itself from the Resident Evil Series, and, while a copycat, it does so well. I can find no flaws in the way the game engine performs.
*Graphics: I found myself thinking I was watching an episode of the X-Files, as compared to actually playing a video game.
*Styles & Execution: All major players are by the main actors of the series. This helps the game feel more like a continuation of the television series. Overall, this really is one of the strongest parts of the game. Nothing beats hearing David Duchovney and Jillian Anderson bantering back and forth as Mulder and Scully. Period.
Cons:
* Questionable collision detection: Sometimes the game will slow down down on you, etc. Also, some of the baddies seem to come out of nowhere. This can also be a result of the poor camera selection.
* Slow gameplay: Perhaps I am a vetern gamer, but this game can play slow at times. For example, I can see things coming, but I cannot get my character turned around in time to affect things. This can be somewhat irritating, as your character will sit there for what seems like an eternity taking a pounding.
Final Review:
4 out of 5 Stars. Recommended. A game for not only hard core X-Philes, but for casual gamers as well. If Survival Horror isn't your thing, but you want to check it out you may want to rent it first.
Great way to still have fun with Mulder and Scully!

I am not your usual "gamer", but was sooooo glad I had previously bought my son a Playstation 2 so that I could get and enjoy this game! Now that the series is over, and we are all waiting for another movie, there is a great way to still enjoy our favorite FBI agents! The game was difficult in some spots for me (really makes you think about the clues), but even someone like me can maneuver through and get through the game. Having the game played through Mulder's point if view and then again through Scully's point of view was a neat addition to the fun. THIS GAME IS A MUST-HAVE FOR ANY SERIOUS X-PHILE!!!! I would not hesitate to recommend it to any player of any age!

This game is increadible. It is hilarious, challenging, and best of all, it's totally true to the theme of the X-Files. It is a great gift for big and small time fans alike, and any action-adventure RPG game fans as well. And best of all, it proves that even PS2 can be fun if you find the right game!
Better than the last game

I got this game as a gift and wasn't sure if I'd like it or not. Let's face it, licensed games are notoriously bad (need I mention Enter the Matrix?). And, while this game is no work of survival horror gaming art, like Fatal Frame or Clock Tower, it is a helluva lot of fun. If you loved the show, especially in the early years, go ahead and pick it up.
And kudos to Fox Interactive for publishing really good titles based on their licenses, such as the two Buffy games and Simpsons Hit n' Run. Just please, please, please don't make a Married with Children game. Thanks!
A Near Perfect X-Files Xperience

With the latest issue into the X-Files saga, there comes a game. Besides from the first game based on the X-Files on the PlayStation, this one is a close-tie with me of being the "better game". To start, it sucks you right into the story, with an original storyline in which was created by the same creator of the show, Chris Carter. In an opening sequence, he takes you back to the incident of 1908, which is said to have occurred in Tunguska, Russia. From that point forward, you want to keep playing and playing.
A big plus within the game is the ability to play both Mulder and Scully. They both have different parts in the story so no need to worry about doing the same things over again. While Mulder's path takes you into more of a action game, Scully's is made up of more puzzles and such, mostly autopsies. Both characters take about eight hours to complete their side of the game.
Graphically, besides some minor glitches, it is very realistic; dark to say it better. With a wide array of weaponry (Pistols, Shotguns, M4's (my favorite), AK-47's, flame throwers, Magnum's, and bio-chemical weapons to provide the ownage), both the flashlight and nightvision goggles become your friend. The voice acting in the game is also suberb. They brought in all the members of the show, David Duchonvy and Gillian Anderson as Mulder and Scully, but also other characters like The Lone Gunmen and A.D. Skinner.
Under the genre of survival horror, The X-Files: Resist or Serve is great. It plays like Silent Hill, but adds the conspiracies and cover-ups that Resident Evil give. At the low price that it is now, it is a shame that this game isn't better known; it is definitely a game to be liked by most. In deciding to get this game, let this quote assist you in your decision: "A struggle for heaven and earth. Where there is one law: Fight or die. And one rule: Resist or serve" said by one of the characters in the game that make a surprise return to the storyline...

This game is a cross between The X Files, Silent Hill, and Resident Evil. It is like Silent Hill in the sense that you can carry an unlimited amount of items. It's like both Silent Hill and Resident Evil in that you're in a town overrun by zombies. Unlike Resident Evil, the zombies can run, and sometimes have weapons, or items for you to take from them after you kill them, and their bodies remain after you kill them. It's vintage X Files, set in the 7th season. It has the voices of great X Files characters like Mulder, Scully, Skinner, Kersh, Krycek, Covarrubias, Cancer Man, and the Lone Gunmen. It's set in the fictional town of Red Falls, Colorado, as well as the F.B.I. HQ, F.B.I. Academy, Roush Technologies, Mulder's apartment, and Tunguska. A perfect blend of new and old from the show. The controls are easy, the graphics are flawless, and the story is enthralling. There are also several shameless references to the show, [the streets in Red Falls are named after X Files episodes for one] and to pop culture in general. There's even a lot of swearing. The bonus features make you feel like you're watching a DVD movie. If you're not into The X Files, then it's time for you to get into it, starting with this game. I hope they make a sequel to it while we wait for the sequel to "Fight the Future."

I think this is a really fun game. It's like Resident Evil. It does have some problems like lots of loading screens. I guess I have the patients for all of these loading screens. Sometimes there's problems with the camera angle after it loads and you get confused where you are and you end up going back where you where and have to wait for it to load again. It's hard to control your character when the camera angle changes. It would be nice if I could use the directional buttons rather than the analog stick for moving. With all of these problems it still a fun game.
