It's not any secret that I'm a huge football fan & I like the simulation games. Managing the teams, building the tournaments, etc. - it's all pretty fun to do in the games. I'd been playing the FIFA series since 1998 and had FIFA 2002 for the Gamecube, but was fed up with it as the software continuously froze or crashed the system. So I moved on to WTS 2003 for the PS2 instead and figured I'd give that one a shot.
And to be honest, I really enjoyed the game. The players had some moves and it was actually a bit fun bringing up your customized team from the school-boy leagues. Some of the players had real faces and did their trademarks well and the game-play is solid. When you're doing a career, you can buy players on the transfer market and you occasionally have bids come in for your players as well that you can accept or refuse. The BAD in the game, however, was above all else... the irresponsible load time. You end up waiting at least a minute and a half for the game to start. You also have some pretty horrible goalkeeping too. It's so bad, it doesn't matter if you use a 'cheap' keeper or buy the best the game has to offer. You'll occasionally see him watch a very, very slow ball roll by him and into the net. And finally, when you load up your game on career level, the game seemingly strips your attributes! So... you're 18 million dollar player has suddenly turned into a 100 thousand dollar player.
All in all, it's a solid game. Not bad, not great - it passes the time. The bad news is that the later editions of this game were hardly improvements at all to THIS one, let alone the 2005 edition. In fact, many believe the new one is even worse than the 2005 version. The load times are still too slow, etc. But on the positive side, FIFA is supposed to be better now and Winning Eleven 8 is out too.

Having never owned a video game before, my sister bought me a PS2 system last month for my birthday along with this game, World Soccer Tour 2003. She knew I really enjoyed watching soccer, especially England's Premier League on FoxSportsWorld. This game is fun and entertaining to play but it was really frustrating at first because I [was] so bad. Finally, after a few weeks of getting getting my but kicked and familiarizing myself with all of the special moves available to me, I figured out how to be competitive and beat the computer's team most of the time. Of course, this is only on the AMATEUR level. Aaghh! I also like the graphics and game commentary because they seem very realistic. I agree with another reviewer in that the free kick option is difficult to perform well based on the instructions in the owner's manual.
I would, however, recommend this product. In fact, I am about to send it to my nephew for his birthday so I can at least be competitive at some video game when I see him next time.

This game by 989 sports is not good. The main menu screen has little writting and is very hard to read. It is very hard to understand the game screen during pre-game selection. The game is good but the computer has the advantage. It is not very easy to score.

This game is not better than fifa or worse it is almost the same. The cool thing about this game is that the playing is almost real and the graphics are okay althought FIFA's is better but the way you play is better in World tour but is is better to rent and decied yourself. The World tour series will totally take over if Fifa dosent step it up a notch.
Not perfect, but still great

i've been playing soccer video games since mattel offered one for the old intellivision console. having been disappointed by EA's FIFA series, i tried this game on recommendations from several people. while EA may have the better graphics, animations, and atmosphere, this game is far superior in terms of gameplay and sheer enjoyment. plus, there are so many competition modes that it's bound to keep you occupied for months.
it has it's drawbacks -- weak sound and a poorly designed free kick system, to name a couple -- but 989 sports has done an excellent job of recreating the flow and pace of soccer. there is also depth to the tactics and on field movement of the players. you can play possession and build attacks with one-touch passing, or slash right down the wings. the crosses work very well and the fininshing is realistic.
the cpu has the tendency to become unstoppable, which can be frustrating, but if you keep your cool you can make tactical adjusments on the fly and weather the storm.
Good, but not great

This game is similar to its predecessor, with some good improvements. Particularly noticeable are the multi-language support, which includes commentary in various languages. Graphics have been improved, and players no longer look like their shoulders are going to fall off. But still, graphics are a bit coarse and pale in comparison to FIFA's.
As it predecessor, the game shines mostly on gameplay. It continues to be a better simulator than FIFA, and it is deep and challenging.
The degree of customization is also something I like a lot. You can fool around a lot with this game creating custom teams, players, competitions, etc. It never gets old.
Some new problems arise, though. Menus navigation has become quite cumbersome, and loading times are ridiculously long. This takes a lot of fun away. And like its predecessor, the AI is almost impossible to beat on harder levels.
Overall, good soccer game, but not great.
Disappointed

I have played every soccer game out there on the market and I believe that WTS 2002 is the best. So I was really looking forward to WTS 2003. What a disappointment. They totally screwed the game up. Graphics are horrible and a lot of the smaller teams don't have updated rosters. I also miss the classic teams they had on WTS 2002.
If you want a great soccer game get World Tour Soccer 2002, its the best.

For so long I have been Buying so called "Soccer Sims" Hoping for it to actually CAPTURE the Complexity of The Real Sport,But my Attempts have always been in Vain. The closest I ever got was EA Sports' FIFA series, and even they were way off. Thank The Soccer God above 989 Sports made WORLD TOUR SOCCER 2003. Just when I was about to forever give up my search for that Special game,I bought WTS2003 for one last go at findng that game, and needless to say I did. The Scores are more evenly match,With final scores being 1-0,2-2,3-2,1-1 and so on, Rather than 10-0 like in other "Sims". The Graphics are the best I have Seen on the PS2 for a Soccer Game.Players Shoot Imeadiately rather than Waiting to get Situated first. The Control Scheme is tight You have two different Sliding tackles that you can choose from for whatever situation calls for it,A 'Hooking' Slide tackle is one where if Challenged correctly the defender Gets to the ball and hooks it out to a nearby player of yours or Out of Bounds. Another,is the regular old school two footed tackle,Where if challenged Correctly, the ball goes straight rather than 'hooked'. You also have the 'conservative' Tackle which is a Block Tackle.
There are a slew of Modes, and more Competitions than you can shake a stick at. The most Innovative Feature is the new "Career Mode" Where you assume the role of a Young High School Team and Play through a School league,Topped off with the infamous "Bleachers" as the place for the audience to sit and root for their Team...AHH! Memories!. My Gripe about this Mode however is, I think it should be more in depth,You should be able to Earn Attribute points to make your Players Better,A way to earn More attribute Points could be a series of "Mini Excercises" Between Games,Like a Soccer Practice or something Before the next game. However,You can Pick a Team and Customize it down to their School Badge. You can Customize your Uniforms,Rename your Team, and players and even Change the Players Looks,But the bad thing to that is that your Customizing Options are limited.Meaning,There are only a few Different options for Hair Style,Hair Color,Face type and Facial Hair. Also there are Very few Different Eye color options as well. You can name your Manager,But can't customize his looks. Also there should be a variety of different things in the Career Mode,You should be able to upgrade your Gear,Earn Sponsors and have more picks besides two for your Home Field. The Pro Roster is a little weird,Some Players Are real ones, but Some aren't. All of the Netherlands Team Are Made up Characters, which really disappointed me since Netherlands is my Favorite team besides USA. These small Gripes aside,WTS is still a VERY solid Soccer Sim. If you like Fast Paced High Scoring affairs,EA's FIFA series is the way to go,But if you are a Die-Hard Soccer fan Like Me (I used to Play Myself) Then WORLD TOUR SOCCER 2003 has enough content in it to keep you Coming back to the Pitch for some time with Months of gameplay.
