Metroid was one my favorite games, so I'm glad they made it on the GBA. Only one problem... Metroid: Zero Mission. Metroid: Zero Mission is a remake of Metroid. Once you complete the game, you can play the whole game of the original Metroid. Don't get me wrong but Metroid: Zero Mission is still the better game. I'm giving Metroid a 9/10.

When I first heard about the classic NES series for GBA it was a dream come true. Metroid was one of my favorite games for the NES and the series from that to Prime Echoes is nothing short of excellent. This is action adventure at its best and it is even more nostalgic when played through the Gamecube GBA adapter right on your 20" TV screen. Only thing better than this is if I had my original NES and Metroid game.

Alright, first to everyone hating on this game for being too hard. What are you talking about? It's very much so beatable. I can see that you'd be mad about that you start with only 30 energy and every time you load a game, it's 30 energy, but I mean.... I didn't have a problem with that (and I'm not even a pro at this. I had never played it before). Just play through it in one sitting if that bothers you so much.
Anyway, this game is awesome. If you're looking at this, you probably know how great the Metroid series is, so I won't go into why this game rocks. I have just two problems with it. One: It needed a map. It's hard to figure out where you are. I fixed that by finding one on the Internet, but it should be built into the game. Two: Some areas of lava won't let you get out. You can tell it was supposed to because of the lowered platform, but you can only get even with it. I guess the developers didn't check everything before it was released. It will make you mad when you just have to sit in the lava and watch your 4 energy packs drain away. Thus, I had to take off for the "fun" level. Too much frustration at times, but hey, that's how it was back in the day.
Of course, there's no reason to buy the stand-alone original. Get Metroid: Zero Mission instead. It has the game remade as a GBA title (with an added twist). That's all I'll say about Zero Mission. And after you beat it, you unlock the original Metroid FOR FREE. That's a bargain. So yeah, get Metroid: Zero Mission. Even if you agree with everybody who thinks it's impossibly hard to beat the original, you can still play through ONE game.
The classic adventure is restored - but don't be deceived

Metroid (1986.) The first game in the Metroid series.
The Metroid series, despite a rather small number of games, is one of Nintendo's most popular franchises. The series was the brainchild of Gumpei Yokoi, who would also design Nintendo's Game Boy and Virtual Boy gaming systems. Although his life would be cut tragically short in a car accident in the mid-nineties following his resignation from Nintendo after the failure of the Virtual Boy project, the Metroid legacy lives on as one of the strongest series in the Nintendo arsenal. The original game was released on the NES in the summer of 1986. And now, the classic is being rereleased in the Nintendo Game Boy Advance NES classics series! Read on for my review.
PROS:
-DESPITE BEING RELEASED SO LONG AGO, METROID REMAINS A FUN GAME TO PLAY. Not many games released this long ago stand the test of time, but Metroid is one of them. When the game was originally released, it took gamers by storm. Today, a number of gamers are discovering (or in some cases, rediscovering) this lost classic. And thanks to this rerelease, many other gamers will be able to as well.
-IT'S A GAME THAT'S SIMPLE AND COMPLEX AT THE SAME TIME. This game has very easy to learn controls. But, there is so much exploring to do that the game quickly becomes a complex one. There are tons of weapons and items to search for, which add to the challenge. Essentially, this game was the prototype for every Metroid game that followed.
-GAME CAN BE SAVED USING PASSWORDS. This was one of the first Nintendo games to use a password system. In other words, it was one of the very first video games that ever let gamers save their progress!
CONS:
-DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, BUY THE CLASSIC NES REISSUE OF THIS GAME! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this game, it's one of my favorite video games of all time! But Nintendo is ripping you off here. If you buy Metroid Zero Mission (just ten bucks more) and beat it, you will UNLOCK this game! Alternatively, if you own Metroid Prime and Fusion, and you beat Fusion and link it to Prime using the GBA/GCN cable, you can unlock the game. In other words, chances are you've already got this game and just don't know it!
-THE PASSWORD SYSTEM IS ONE OF THE WORST IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY. Why, you ask? This was an EARLY system, and it has EVERY LETTER AND NUMBER, plus upper and lower case letters. It is easy to confuse the characters when you write down passwords.
-THE GAME IS CHALLENGING, AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY. Blocky play control is the greatest contributor to the challenge in this game. Having to use Select to turn missiles on and off is annoying. Likewise, you can't wall jump, shoot downward or diagonally, turn into a ball in midair, jump while you're a ball, or view a map of the area. It's hard to beat this game without a walkthrough.
-DIFFERENT BEAMS CAN'T BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ONE ANOTHER. This flaw wasn't corrected until Super Metroid came out. If you get the Wave Beam, it overrides the Ice Beam, or vice versa. This means if you get the Wave Beam, you have to find another Ice Beam before you go to the Tourian area at the end of the game.
-EVERYTHING THIS GAME DOES, ZERO MISSION DOES IT BETTER. And since Zero Mission allows you to unlock THIS ENTIRE GAME, wouldn't you just be better off buying it? I urge you, shell out the extra ten bucks and get Zero Mission.
OVERALL:
I think I've made my point pretty clear. This is an excellent game, but get Zero Mission instead. You'll be getting this entire game plus another entire game that is much better. You know what to do now, so do it.
Good but Redundant

The only reason I don't give this full stars is because you can get it in Metroid Prime or Zero Mission.
This game was one of the best Nintendo games. Don't even say anything about features in this game either, such as no wall jumping no beam combinations etc. If you TRULY we're a fan of this and bought it on NES when it was new, you were excited to see such a cool game.
If you can't handle the difficulty or the controls (I beat it when I was 10 or 11 so I don't know what the problem is) go play your easy cheese Super Metroid where you can save every half an hour. Don't get me wrong, I love Super Metroid, but gimme a break Metroid is NOT THAT HARD.
Five-Star game but a three star package

Metroid is said to be one of the greatest series in gaming history. Not only did Metroid invent a genre that has constantly been used over and over again, but it had original gameplay that allowed you to explore the world without a set path. The classic NES series gives us all a chance to play the original Metroid again. Unfortunately, Metroid suffers from what other games in the Classic NES Series suffer from. The game, as you probably know, has already been re-released (you probably don't even know you have it) and the price to buy this classic is much too expensive.
Metroid has a simple concept. You're Samus Aran, sent to the planet Zebes to destroy the Mother Brain and the Metroid threat and save the galaxy. Going through the midst of Zebes, Samus will gain new abilities to help her along the way.
The gameplay is pretty basic: If anything moves, shot it. You're job is to explore Zebes, find all your abilities and destroy the Mother Brain. In my opinion this is the most challenging Metroid adventure.
Nintendo has only added one new feature, and its pretty handy. You no longer have to enter a password as you can now save your game onto the cartridge itself. The password is stored in the system and is already on the screen when you choose to continue.
Graphically, it looks no different than it did in 1986. Of course, this in itself presents problems. Since this is a direct port of the original Metroid, all the glitches and such are still there.
Music wise: the game the still sounds pretty good. By now everyone should know the Metroid theme, and the original theme still sounds good even twenty years later.
But of course this game does have its backdrops. I wanted so badly to give this game five stars but there's no possible way I can do it with how Nintendo is ripping people off.
This game, as the previous reviewer mentioned, has already been re-released. If you have Metroid Prime, Metroid Fusion, a GBA and a GCN/GBA link cable you can unlock the original Metroid in Metroid Prime. Also, for just ten dollars more you can buy Metroid: Zero Mission and the original game (which is actually the EXACT SAME AS THIS) can be unlocked. So chances are, you've already got the original Metroid.
This certainly isn't worth forking over $20 dollars for since its already out there enough as it is. Save your money and instead buy Metroid: Zero Mission and unlock the original Metroid game. That's more worth the money because you get two games as opposed to one.
I have not gotten this

Let me tell you, I love the Metroid games. All the ones I got have great storys to each of them. I don't own this so I can't tell you what I think. All I wanted to say was to get
Metroid-Zero Mission instead because First of all, it has a great story, and second it also has this game on it. But you do have to get through it first. Or if you just want to play the NES Metroid without having to get through another game, then go for it and buy this. Either way, you'll be getting a good deal.
Metroid Prime Contains it too besides Zero Mission!

I just wanted to let you guys know that I was reading the Metroid Prime Article and I found out that Metroid Prime (The first one) Contain this classic NES game too. It's easy just hook up your Game Boy to the Gamecube by using the Super Cable and remember if you have Metroid Fusion, if you beat it already you can now play Metroid on the Gamecube!
