This game is just sad. Capcom thinks they can just throw in a character from a COMPLETELY different game, and expect to roll in some more dough. [Loud buzzer ringing] Wrong. Viewtiful Dante just doesn't have that ring to it. So, bottom line. Pick up the Gamecube version and leave this one in the dust.

Viewtiful Joe is one of the most fun games I have played in a while. It has been stated many times that it is a highly creative, action-packed game and it certainly is. Here's the short version on the story: Joe gets pulled into a movie in order to save Silvia who has been kidnapped and taken to movieland.

The graphics in this game are awesome. Combining 2-D sidescrolling action with 3-D cel-shaded graphics gives the game the look and feel of an adventure straight out of a comic book. The fighting system in this game is very unique. Of course Joe has punch/kick abilities and combos, but as points are earned in the game you can buy new moves that definately will come in handy at some point in the game. The VFX meter allows Joe to either attack enemies in slow-motion(this becomes ideal against some enemies) or in mach speed.

The levels in VJ often contain puzzles which you must solve in order to advance. Some are very easy but others may take a little while to figure out. Plenty of characters and bosses are featured, and the bosses each have weaknesses which must be exploited to advance to the next episode.

Overall this is a must-own if you like constant button-mashing action. I love the graphics in this game and the music that accompanies it is pretty cool as well. There are secret characters to unlock also and other good stuff for beating the game on the different difficulties. But I definately recommend at least renting this title and judging for yourself. Chances are you will want to add this game to your collection and that would be a wise choice also.

It's so viewtiful

I haven't played a side-scroller this good since tmnt hyperstone heist. I love the graphics in this game, they're so stylish and funky. The vfx powers like slow-mo, mach speed and zoom in add a lot of style, variety and fun to the game. Many of the parts feel like the martix movies, especiallly when you're dodging bullets in slow-mo from those cowboy guys. The game has two major set backs though, no saving until you've beaten a level and the boss fights will take hours if not even months to beat like it did for me when I had to fight the magnificent five and fire leo. This game is definetly NOT for those who break controllers easily out of frustration because I almost chucked my wavebird across my room but common sense and sanity told me to stop. Once again this game was strictly meant and designed for the hard-core, side-scrolling gamer so don't buy it if you've never played a beat-em up game before. Do yourself a favor go out and buy this game you'll love it's quirkiness and silly sense of humour completely stylish graphics and captivating storyline.

Clever puzzles, good fights, nice graphics, amusing plot.

For what is essentially a glorified side-scroller (not that that's a bad thing), it's surprisingly good. The challenges are well balanced (both the fights and the puzzles), the plot is a clever mockery of superhero and sentai movies without becoming too self-conscious, and the interface is novel. You get super powers, see, when you become the hero in this movie world you get sucked into (reminds me of GEX.) Slow-mo, fast-forward speed, and zoom, each of which enable you to fight better. When in slow-mo, you can target your attacks with a lot more accuracy, and even smack bullets (normally invisible 'cos they're so fast) towards another enemy. Speed enables you to rain an incredible flurry of punches and kicks on an opponent, and zoom enables you to pull off stunts that, well, happen in movies after a zoom.

However, each of these also affects the game world in a fun way. If you're on fire, and you fast forward, the rushing air around you blows out the fire. If you do a fast-forward flurry of punches on an object, you eventually become suffused with your own fire (and are immune to its heat.) If you slow-mo during an explosion, it becomes larger and more effective. And so on--each of your clever little 'fighting' abilities has implications that allow you to solve in-game puzzles. The fighting applications are secondary.

And, for those who are there more for the story and puzzles than the fighting, the difficulty-level selection option at the opening is nice.

This game is a lot of fun, and if you only have a Playstation 2 (or 3, now), you should definitely buy this game for it. However, this game was designed to run on the more powerful Gamecube hardware, and if you have that system, you should buy it for that instead, and avoid frame-rate hiccups altogether.

The creativity in this game is off of the charts. I was thinking about whether or not this was a 2d or 3d game but now I think it borders on 4-dimensional because you can manipulate time. Heck, let's just call it 5-dimensional with the 5th dimension being creativity! The great thing is that you can find this game in used stores for less than fifteen bucks! Why can't more games be like this? Totally worth buying.
