I have followed all the hype surrounding this title long before it was released. I have played every previous Sid Meier title to exhaustion, insatisfied if I had not mastered every trick. So, once Civ3 appeared in Amazon, I readily preordered it and set aside a week of my time for it.
Civ3 is certainly a great game. It is visually beautiful, its AI is impressing, and it is certainly a lot better that Civ2. However, I found several disadvantages:
* the immense corruption forces you to play with a max of 12 cities (unless you start hacking around in the editor, as I did).
* There is no unit workshop.
* As the focus of the game is now much less combat and much more empire management, you may play several games that are boringly peaceful all up to the modern age - and perhaps to the very end.
* The tech tree has a few modifications, but nothing original here. No original unit abilities, either. Apart from the culture idea, no significant changes to the old successful formula.
Now, I am not saying the game is bad. It simply does not have this extra little something that made Civ2 an excellent game and Alpha Centauri an excellent sequel. I expected more - what, I cannot really say. But I know I didn't find it in Civ3.
The Game is good, but the LE is a waste of money

The games is good, a lot of bugs, but still a good game. Limited Edition, is only a tinbox with a poster inside, the rest you'll get with the standard package. [$] for a lunchbox is a bit over the top.
A truly AWSOME game

I preorderd this game and still play it for hours on end. I was/am a big fan of the other Civilization games and was not disappointed with the third installment of the series. Anyone who dreamed of running a great civilization to glory or loves strategy and management should purchase this game. I LOVE this game. Also the game editor is very well done and can really change the game for unlimited power and you can customize your own worlds to every last detail and in fact I'm going to play it right now.

This is the Best CIV to date. Those who gave this game less than 5 stars are incapable of being pleased, or had to high of hopes.

I was very excited when I heard there would be a Civilizations III, but was worried when I saw it in the stores for the first time. I was worried that the visual improvements would come at a cost to the stragic portions. After playing only a couple of hours I realized how much more realistic the game is. Civ 3 is great! This game will most certainly will get the resentment of my wife as hours fly by!
If you can't do it better, don't do it at all!

What a waste of money. The only thing in this that is better than civII is the borders, and the updated look. I'm still on the easy level and cant see how the other levels are playable when in the easy level you cant even get to end of the science tree before the game is over. Unless you build more than 50 cities. With that number of cities each turn will take roughly 20+ minutes, much longer if your at war. The whole game is not playable without the govener function on. You will forget what you wanted to do on that turn because you will be getting your cities out of civl disorder... The trade function is pointless, because no one will trade fairly. For example I was asked for three luxurys, two civ advances, and 130 gold per turn in excange for one luxury from them! You would be better off taking their city(s)... Resorces are crazy. Even with 50 cities you will find yourself searching the globe to get what you need to build units. Yet some of the AI players seem to always get them in their borders. Don't bother to build a colony, the AI players will just take it over by building a city next to it, and your S.O.L.. When I read about CIVIII a year ago, I thought this was to be less about war and more about deplomacy and trade, but neither works well in this game. So you have to battle it out which doesn't even work well(read the other reviews). It's not much different than CIV II, except that this one is a disapointing update. Hopefully next time if they can't do it better, they won't do it at all.

When Civ 2 came out it caused me to lose track of time. I have seen the same thing happening now. Civ 3 is a great game which offers many hours of entertainment which will make you wish there was more time in the day. For either the new Civ player, or a returning Civ addict, this game will not dissapoint. While it is an incredible game, there are some flaws (...). In some cases it is a metter of pushing the 'i believe button' (tanks vs. archers) because it allows balance in the game to a degree. Other flaws such as corruption can be fixed with patches (if you decide to take an easy way) available at Civ 3 fan sites by doing a simple search on the internet.
Overall it is an excellent game which shows that you don't need mindblowing AI to enjoy yourself on a lazy weekend.
