My first game of the sort, and WOW be prepared to spend some time on it. The game covers all basic aspects of a civilization from military, interior, to foreign affairs, etc. Obviously the purpose is to become the CIVILIZATION, which can be achieved in a number of ways: a)be the last to survive, b)be first to send a spaceship, etc.
Once your civilization gets a decent size, it is a bit more overwhelming to manage the various tasks, but nevertheless it is fun.
Once again, highly addictive.
A Superb Turn-based Game!!!

This is the most fun and addictive game I've ever played.
It's downright a serious plotting, strategizing, and micro-managing game that will leave you on a constant move for a better way to outwit your opponents.
A great buy and one of those good games that keep you play over and over again...
Like other gamers, I just jumped right into the game w/o reading the instructions, and I was so misserable with just a few turns into the game. I almost gave up out of frustration.
I can see how other(s) find this game to be boring.
But the game can be very enjoyable if you keep trying with different approaches. And you'll come to appreciate the game after your hardwork's rewarded with being the sole superpower who can crush every single Civ. out there at will.
I found it's plausible to totally killing off all other civilizations by mid 1500 AD on the Highest "Deity" level and be the first to race to space by 2010(assuming that you have set these options at the very beginning). Towards the end, it's so much fun to have so many modern weapons (missiles, launchers, nukes, artileries/tanks...etc.) that you can't use because you have totally eliminated all your opponents. Game-time's over by 2050, which forces you to retire.
Overall, this is a very impressive game, your hard earned pennies well-spent. Unlike other similar games, CivIII offers a much more at ease pace gameplay which gives you plenty of time to develop your own strategies and plot the victory to your own liking. Highly recommended.

There are only about a dozen or so strategy games out there that are more interesting, creative and exciting than Civ3. Consumer beware! This is nothing more than Alpha Centauri repackaged and maybe a little more eyecandy. This is yet another formulaic, static, staid pseudo-strategy game with nothing new or innovative whatsoever. The combat is frustratingly illogical, (axe-wielding warriors defeating tanks?!?) and simplistic, and the controls are simply juvenile and clumsy. Forget economy or commerce too, they are nonexistent in this game. They claim to have hyped up diplomacy, but do not be fooled! All they did was put some pretty pictures in the windows! There is really no difference in this game from Master of Orion, a game which is a decade old now, but clearly the better of the two.
Best Civilization Yet

This is the hardest Civilization yet. It is also the best.
Most of the bad reviews sound like sour grapes. This game is not impossible. I won on the Deity level.
Good ideas, but disappointing, too buggy

I'm a big fan of the Civilization series -- I think Civ II is maybe the best PC game of all time. Many of the features in Civ III are appealing, and after a bit of mindset adjustment, are actually quite fun.
The problem: bugs. Even at patch v1.29f (the last one offered before the Conquests expansion), I have yet to play through an entire game without running into some kind of computer-move hang, or game crash, or SOMETHING that completely obviates the substantial amount of time you've put into a particular game. Seeing two days of gameplay go up in smoke because an important strategic resource appears NOWHERE on the entire map is not fun.
I'm not too eager to plop down another $20-30 to get an expansion for a game I can't play in the first place, so I guess I'm out of luck. My recommendation is to save your money, and cherish the memories of the earlier installments of the franchise.
what a disappointment

1. Exhausting
2. Fustrating
I had a city full of f 15s and not one bombing raid hit, this game is a complete waste of time to play, not enjoyable at all. Dont waste your money on this game, buy Civ 2.

I love this game and it's not even mine (it's my brother's).I hate instructions so I never read them. This game is easy enough to figure out but I'm still working on it (I have to ask my brother some questions).I'm one of the people who likes the Sims but this is way, way, way better!!I'm going to buy this game when I get my own (better) computer. Also, I was planning on getting a bunch of Sim games for when I get a computer but now I've changed my mind. This game isn't too addictive but it will take some time.

Civ III is the best board-game I have ever played (and that's saying something). It is also the most interesting sim-style game I have come across. This game is not for the weak of mind or heart.
Game play can be tedious at times, later in the game, when your civilization grows large, and the game as a whole actually requires some thinking and strategy to play.
All in all, if you are the type who likes to play a game for fun...and likes an actual mental challenge, this game is for you.

I thought it would be much better than Age of Empires, but I was wrong. Just as in that game, you can never find a winning scenario. I don't know how some of these psople wrote reviews on winning and becoming supreme deity status. The game is slow, there is no diplomacy between nations. Everyone of them declares war on you. All of the opposing civ's reach higher status than you. The other problem is you always run out of resources and are down to 0 gold before you know it. You can't customize policies with other nations and they all want to blackmail you into giving up all of your gold.
I like Medieval better. Not as much detail but far better strategy game.
