World War Review

This game has it's pros and cons. The graphics are exceedingly done with very intrequite pictures and scenes. Some computers can't have Flight Simulator 2 because the graphics and coloring is to good for the computer. I've expierienced it.

This games pros are that you can lock on to bases or ships although it doesn't auto-target them. If you hit a cerain button then a big yellow square will go around the object you have chosen and keep track of it's location. Also when you lock on to it, on the top of the screen it tells what you've just locked on to.

Another pro is that it's not only starting, taking off, flying, and landing. You actually get to fire missles, drop bombs, shoot at people, etc. It has no bounderies.

One of the few cons in this game is that it gets a little dull after a while because it takes over an hour to complete one mission. (My mom always kicks me off by then.)

This is a great game. Oh no! I've been shot I'm going down.

CFS2: The Pacific Theater... The Best WW2 Flight Sim Ever!

Don't be fooled by the negative reviews of Combat Flight Simulator 2: Pacific Theater found on this site. The vast majority of these reviews are not of CFS2, rather of the inability of many people's PCs to run it effectively. As an amateur World War 2 aviation historian and a real flight sim nut, I find this to be the very finest WW2 flight sim ever offered to the public. This may make it too much for someone looking for a simple and fun flying game, but for historians and flight sim aficionados, this program is awesome! While I have found immense thrill in finally having a flight sim serve up an unrecoverable flat spin, and learning how to (occasionally) recover them; when I shared my sense of glee with a friend whose interests were more 'game' oriented, he told me he'd figured a way to get out of them every time, the Escape key.

The CFS2 aircraft flight models seem very accurate, and the graphics are unsurpassed. They've even offered the first independently controllable, multi-engined plane in the CFS series (a P-38 Lightning, with counter-rotating props and all. The whole thing is just 'candy' for someone with interests similar to mine. The maps are, of course, accurate, and the terrain so readable that I'm sure I'd now recognize historic locations like Guadalcanal in real life. Taking the plane off its' automatic settings will also help interested non-pilots learn a great deal about operating airplanes. Lastly, (another graphics and candy comment) the combat environment is so stunningly real, I am struck by the similarities between this simulator and film of the real thing. Burning planes sometimes extinguish themselves or else they burn with occasional explosions that correspond with the fire reaching different fuel tanks and other extra-flammable portions of the plane. Planes that have gone down burning leave an arcing dark cloud to the ground, which takes several minutes to dissipate. You hear bullets and ground fire (ack-ack) whiz by your plane, and the representation is so real that when you see two AA shells whip right past your plane at your altitude (on low-level ground attack missions) and explode 500 yards ahead of you, you know to change your heading and/or your altitude. Either that or you're going to get it.

My only frustration is a result of the program being very historically accurate. The Allies (and particularly the U.S.) held there own throughout the war, even when they were in inferior planes, by advanced teamwork and unit tactics. The Japanese were not so strong in these attributes, so as the Japanese campaigns go on, it gets harder and harder to keep your team working together; frustrating but accurate. However, if you aren't aware of these historical realities it may just seem that the game is becoming more difficult for no apparent reason. If you want a 'fun' airplane game, take a look at Crimson Skies. If you want the very best simulator of World War 2 aerial combat ever produced, buy Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2. (...and Microsoft, If you want to make me REALLY happy, offer an updated European Theater version offering all of the new features of this program.)

Will NOT Run Under Windows NT (any version)

1.) This game will absolutely NOT run under Windows NT (any version). I tried it at a friend's home and it was fantastic. I then visited ... and saw that ... listed it as running under Win 95, 98, and NT - so I purchased as copy. Much to my surprise, it would NOT install. I called Microsoft "Games Tech Support" (in the back of the manual) and they told me that it definitely would NOT run under Windows NT (any version). However, "Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator: WW-II Europe" and "Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000" WILL run under Windows NT - so I bought those directly from ... You can buy their games AND get the correct information about each game's requirements from: ... 2.) Although I do not have it working on my PC, it is an incredibly realistic flight combat game. It is technically better than "MS Combat Flight Simulator: WW-II Europe", although I still like that games a great deal. BUT it is NOT as realistic as "MS Flight Simulator 2000": no combat here, but is like taking actual flight lessons (which I am currently doing and this software was recommended by the instructor). 3.) Do NOT rely on ... information re: system requirements about any games. Go to Microsoft or other manufacturer to get the CORRECT information. (I contacted ... about 1 month ago re: incorrect information on their web site and they still have NOT corrected it!!

Could use some spice

This game is an allright game. If you are into the heavy bombing and missle game, do not get this one. The graphics are cool, but trying to control the plane, and getting used to the armaments is fairly tough. If you are into old WWII style simulations this game is definetly for you.

Best flight sim I've used. Doesn't crash my comp and keeps me entertained. Best part is that you are able to DL a/c and missions, as well as campaigns. :)

777 vs. Zero

Ok, yeah it only comes with 7 planes but a few minutes on the net and a few hours downloading and you will have enough planes to last you forever. As a student pilot I fight my instructor (and send him down in flames more often then not) and work on flying routes and such, not great practice, but its fun, oh and if you own FS2002 or 2000 just bring the airplanes over, its fun trying to dogfight in a 777, really it is!!!

All in all a good game, AI needs a little help, and if you want a wingman who can hit the broadside of the barn you need to donwload an add-on, but overall its pretty darn good.

THIS GAME RULES.

I totally agree on what Thomas Gubiotti pointed out. If I add one more thing to the complaints, it will be the AI planes. They just keep turning when I chase them and become easy preys: I don't see any brilliant acrobatics from AI planes. Maybe I am asking too much, but to be more realistic, some of the AI planes should be piloted by aces or veterans and some by rookies, but I don't see any difference in AI planes in terms of flight skill.

After playing IL-2 and reading many bad reviews on CFS3, I feel that CFS2 is still the best combat sim game available out there. IL-2 is fantastic with all those realistic damage models and tracers; what I find CFS2 is better than IL-2 is still the graphics. In IL-2, you cannot really tell shapes of planes when they are far away: They are just dots and you cannot tell whether they are peeling off or not until they are closer. In CFS2, you can actually see the wings of planes at a similar distance and as a consequence you can see how they are moving. FYI, I am using the same resolution for both games.

I think this game will be classic or may already be classic. If you are new to the combat flight sim, buy this game. You will not regret. If you need some challenge, then buy IL-2.

I'am only 11 and I have about every flight simulator there is. The graphics are good except when you get to low. The cockpit view is good and the sound is good. It's best to have a jostick. We had a hard time with it because we didnt have the rite joystick so if you are going to get it get a good joystick. You can fly planes like the Hellcat,Consair and Wildcat. You can fly Japanese planes like the Zero and George. The campain mode is asome. And if you have CFS1 you can play the Eroupen campain like I can. There is some problems thow. It can get realy boring if you dont have CFS1. Evan thow it says you can play two player you cant, and it's almost inposible to land on a aircraft carrier. Other wise get the game it's worth every penny.
